এক সময় ভারতের সার্কাস আন্তর্জাতিক মানের ছিল । নামকরা বড়ো সার্কাস গুলোর মধ্যে ছিল এম্পায়ার সার্কাস , অলিম্পিক সার্কাস , জেমিনি সার্কাস, আরেকটার নাম মনে পড়ছেনা এখন । মাঝারি মানের মধ্যে ছিল নটরাজ সার্কাস , অজন্তা সার্কাস ইত্যাদি । আগে গ্রাম্য মেলা গুলোতেও যে সব ছোট সার্কাস গুলো আসত , সে গুলোও এই সার্কাসের থেকে অনেক ভালো ভালো রোমহর্ষক খেলা দেখাত । মোটামুটি গত ১৯৭৫ পর্যন্ত ভারতের সার্কাস শিল্প খুব ভালো অবস্থায় ছিল । তারপর থেকেই খুব দ্রুত অবস্থা খারাপ হতে থাকে । বর্তমানে ভারতের সার্কাস শিল্প খুব ই করুণ ও রুগ্ন অবস্থার মধ্যে দিয়ে যাচ্ছে । মূল কারণ জীব জন্তুর খেলা দেখানো বন্ধ করা ; মানুষের টিভিতে আসক্ত হয়ে পড়া , সার্কাস চালানোর খরচ না ওঠা । এরকম অবস্থা দেখে মনে খুব কষ্ট হয় । এজন্য আমি এক ই সাদামাটা খেলা দেখতে ভালো না লাগলেও সার্কাস এলে দলবল নিয়ে দেখতে যাই । এবং রীতিমতো টিকিট কেটে সার্কাস দেখি ।
