Mauna Kea Visitor Information Station Volunteer, Yoleen Lucas, wrote wonderful lyrics about astronaut Ellison Onizuka to the tune of John Denver's "Rocky Mountain High". In this video Yoleen performs her song. Footage from the 2012 Onizuka Science Day at U.H. Hilo is shown, as well as images from volunteer's Nathan Secrest, Alex Mukensnable, and Andrew Cooper.

I've been to the Andes mountains so this mountain is no problem
what they fail to say is that the highest peak was bulldozed an levelled down 40 feet to make room for keck telescope
I AM GRATEFUL FOR THE ADDITIONAL INFORMATION MAKING KNOWN THE IMPORTANCE FO THE MAUNA KEA MOUNTAIN TO THE PEOPLE OF HAWAII. AND TO THE FAMILY NAME OF MAUNA KEA.
No one will ever get me up there again, in spite of the amazing views. My lungs are too weak to cope with the lack of oxygen.
Taking oxygen along with you is a wise precaution.
I was blown away by the place when I visited it. I'm going to have my ashes spread there. I will be at peace.

Didn't realize that the submillimeter telescope was renamed Robert Leighton telescope. 1964-2014 that's almost half a century Mauna Kea !!!
