The truth from above - Traditional English Christmas carol arranged by Vaughan Williams
Singing the soprano, alto, tenor and bass parts for Vaughan Williams' 4-part arrangement of the traditional English carol 'The truth from above'.
The full version of this carol has numerous verses summarising half the bible, but I have omitted some of them, so not to outstay my welcome.
Wishing you all a peaceful Christmas and New Year.

'Jesus Christ the apple tree' by Elizabeth Poston - singing all the parts
Просмотров 132Месяц назад
One of my favourite Advent pieces, 'Jesus Christ the apple tree'. Lyrics from 'Diving Hymns or Spiritual Songs' compiled by Joshua Smith, set to music by Elizabeth Poston. All parts performed and recorded by me (including those dodgy top Gs). Wishing you a peaceful Christmas season, wherever you are. Lyrics: The tree of life my soul hath seen, Laden with fruit and always green; The trees of nat...
'O nata lux' - Thomas Tallis - One-voice chorus
Просмотров 1685 месяцев назад
A quick recording of the short anthem 'O nata lux' by Thomas Tallis. As usual, all the parts are sung my me, so I take full responsibility for anything that sounds a bit off! Experimented with a green screen this time but still having issues with my camera, so sorry for the occasional flickering and weird artefacts. The background image is by Tama66 on Pixabay. Lyrics: O nata lux de lumine Jesu...
Schubert 'Der Leiermann' - voice and hurdy gurdy
Просмотров 1919 месяцев назад
'Der Leiermann' or 'The Hurdy Gurdy Man' is the last song from Schubert's song cycle 'Winterreise'. Originally for voice and piano, this is my version with hurdy gurdy. I've had the hurdy gurdy for about 6 months and this is my first recording. Hope to include it in some more videos soon! The song's lyrics are from a poem by Wilhelm Müller. They tell of an old hurdy gurdy man, barefoot and with...
Singing Bruckner's 4-part 'Locus iste' all by myself
Просмотров 949 месяцев назад
'Locus iste' - a beautiful short motet by Anton Bruckner for soprano, alto, tenor and bass. I used to sing this with my old choir but now I have no one to sing it with, so I've got to do it all myself. This is my quick recording of me attempting all the parts. If it's not right, there's no one to blame but me! It's just over 3 octaves in range from the lowest bass to the highest soprano note.
Rachmaninoff's 'Bogoroditsye Dyevo' - but no one else wants to sing with me
Просмотров 83Год назад
Attempting all 8 voice parts for 'Bogoroditsye Dyevo' from Sergei Rachmaninoff's 'All night vigil' (Op. 37) because I felt like singing it and no one else was around to join in. There are 38 separate vocal parts layered together although I only videoed each part once. In the videos I was singing pretty much from memory so the visuals aren't always 100% accurate. This is a lovely piece and bring...
Walking in the air - cover of song from 'The Snowman'
Просмотров 149Год назад
I'm about to head off for Christmas, so here's a hastily put together cover of 'Walking in the air', Howard Blake's 1982 song from the classic Christmas animation 'The Snowman'. Accompaniment on elderly digital piano with many violins and electric octave violins. Vocal is me pretending I still have a treble voice. Apologies for the video quality. It was recorded in a rush on my dodgy tablet. Ad...
Ghostbusters - One-voice a cappella - with low-effort costumes
Просмотров 358Год назад
Happy Halloween, all you lovely people! Here's an a cappella arrangement of the Ghostbusters theme song for the spooky season, arranged and recorded by me, based on the original 1984 song by Ray Parker Jr. This was a bit of a nightmare to do and put together in a rush these past few days. I managed to record the various takes at different tempos, so trying to sync it all up has been a bit of a ...
Spice Girls 'Wannabe' - but it's a Schubert Lied from the 1820s
Просмотров 267Год назад
To all my wonderful subscribers - 'die Freundschaft wird niemals enden'! This is my very daft arrangement of the Spice Girl's 1996 hit 'Wannabe', originally written by Melanie Brown, Melanie Chisholm, Emma Bunton, Geri Halliwell, Victoria Beckham, Matt Rowe and Richard Stannard. This version is reimagined in the style of a Schubertian Romantic 'Lied' from the early 19th Century. My elderly elec...
Bonny at morn - traditional song with voice and lyre
Просмотров 102Год назад
'Bonny at morn' is a traditional folk song believed to be from Northumbria in north-east England. This is my own, fairly simple arrangement for voice and lyre. In case you are wondering, I recorded the audio and video separately. I didn't properly memorise the lyre part, so if you look carefully, my hands don't always match the sound. However, I've procrastinated for far too long already with t...
Raindrops keep fallin' on my head - Slow version with handpans, water and strings
Просмотров 136Год назад
This well-known song was originally written by Burt Bacharach and Hal David for the 1969 film 'Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid'. This is my own slow version with handpans, violins, violas, voice and dripping tap. This was the first song I arranged in lockdown one weekend back in 2020. Have finally got round to re-recording it. As always, this is entirely my own project, so any duff notes are...
Hear my prayer, O Lord - Henry Purcell - One-voice chorus
Просмотров 168Год назад
One of my favourite choral pieces, this is Henry Purcell's 'Hear my prayer, O Lord' from 1682 when he was employed at Westminster Abbey. It's written for 8 voices, two sopranos, two altos, two tenors and two basses. Each part has its own independent line which weaves together with the others into a rich crunchy counterpoint. The words come from the first verse of Psalm 102: "Hear my prayer, O L...
Tainted Love - but it's a Baroque aria from the 1700s
Просмотров 725Год назад
Tainted Love, made famous by Soft Cell, but I've rearranged it in the style of a Baroque aria from the 1700s. Originally written by Ed Cobb and recorded by Gloria Jones in 1964. Later made famous by Soft Cell with their 1981 version. This version arranged for harpsichord, bass, strings, solo violin, recorders and countertenor. Reharmonised over a lament bass ostinato with additional violin solo...
The Misty Mountains - The Hobbit - One-voice chorus
Просмотров 491Год назад
Song from the 2012 film 'The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey'. All parts performed, recorded and mixed by me, so - as always - any wonky notes or duff visuals are all mine! The 'costumes' are mostly things I had around the house, including some IKEA rugs, a blanket, and an old wig that definitely needs a good brush. Lyrics by J.R.R. Tolkein Music by David Donaldson, David Long, Steve Rochie and J...

Music by Enya Lyrics by Roma Ryan Arranged by me for SSAATTBB voices Sorry I look a little grumpy/spaced out in some of the videos: I've not been feeling so well recently. This song has helped me feel better though. I hope you like it too.

POPCORN - Bardcore style - made famous by CRAZY FROG
A second excellent hurdy-gurdy accompaniment on youtube to this wonderful song. Good voice, but a bit too forceful.
Past mid-night, as I stare at the firelight in in my sheiling all alone How I hate to spend the eventide on my own Autumn wind bloweth outside my window as I look upon the room And it maketh me so sick to see the gloom With not a soul out there No one can hear my prayer Give me, give me, give me A man/maid after midnight Will nobody help me Chase the shadows away Give me, give me, give me A man/maid after midnight Take me through the darkness To the break of the day Noble-born set at high keep at castle with that fine costly wear ‘Tis so different to the lot that I must bear When with musing, I stand in the doorway and I gaze into the night Yet I see naught there, no one enters my sight With not a soul out there No one can hear my prayer Give me, give me, give me A man/maid after midnight Will nobody help me Chase the shadows away Give me, give me, give me A man/maid after midnight Take me through the darkness To the break of the day Give me, give me, give me A man/maid after midnight Will nobody help me Keep the shadows at bay?
Superb Tim, wishing you a happy Christmas x
Thank you! Merry Christmas to you too!
Beautiful voice as always. Happy Yule and new year to you and your family!
Thank you! And the same to you and your family too!
Superb, as always, Tim. Have just returned from St Paul's Advent service in Bristol........
Thank you, Jan! Hope your Advent service went well.
Another great production - happy Advent!
Thanks - same to you too!
Love it <3, you transported to past centuries with your arrangement <3
Thank you for your kind words! Glad you enjoyed it!
Hey bro do you have the tabs for this
Hi. Do you mean the guitar tabs for the chords? I arranged it by ear from listening to the original song. I could probably work out what the chord sequences are, but I don't have them immediately to hand.
Fire
Divine!
Thank you! Thanks for watching!
Brilliant!
Thank you, Jan!
It is a Swiss folk song (not a French one) around 1740. In the original text in the Bernese dialect, it is a tragic love story that took place in the small Bernese community of Guggisberg. That’s why it’s also called Guggisberglied.
Thanks for your comment giving more background to this song, and sorry it's taken me a while to reply. I've looked into this a bit more but there's no mention of the Swiss origin of this song in the Britten folksongs edition I have - it's simply in the 'France' section with no further information. I can't find any further information about the Britten arrangement anywhere online either. It's definitely the same melody and very similar lyrics to the Guggisberg song as you quite rightly pointed out. I don't know whether Britten mistakenly thought the song was from France or whether he considered it to be a different French version of the original Swiss song. In any case, I've updated the song description to reflect the song's Swiss origins. Thanks for pointing this out to me! :-)
Positively stunning. I can hear the strain on a few of the soprano notes, but the fact it's only at the highest point you start to get a little uncomfortable shows just how wide your range really is. And even *then* I feel like most would only notice if they were looking for it. The whole piece blends wonderfully 💜
Thank you for your kind words. The soprano part goes up to a top G which is about as high as I can go in falsetto. Some days I can reach it without a sweat and other times, if my voice isn't quite in the right place, it's a bit of a stretch. Glad I don't have to sing up there too often! 😆
... and here is Tim modeling the latest in 'executioner chic'... Great gurdying!
Yes - definitely channelling Tudor headsman energy here, although it's not quite the same without the mask...
Great hurdygurdying! You handle it really well! I look forward to you turning out lots of future videos! (But don’t fret too much…😊)
He he! Thanks a lot!
This is so good! The instrument suits you Tim 🥰
Thank you! Am having lots of fun playing it!
Darkly delightful performance. The hoodie is genius. What a gorgeous instrument.
Thank you! Yes, it's a lovely instrument to play.
Absolutely beautiful Tim, such quality in all the voices. These videos bring so much joy. x
Thanks for taking a listen and for your lovely comments!
Sounds amazing as usual 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾! Also love the contrast between your soprano face and your bass face in the thumbnail 😂!
Thank you! To be honest, I posted this in a bit of a rush and didn't even look at the thumbnail picture. I find my bass face is always super serious!
"Vengeance am I, ye very night itself: for lo! I am ye BATMAN!!!"

Lol, the beginning.

Brilliant again - and belated Happy Christmas. I was just waiting for the scene where you flew off over the chimney tops hand-in-hand with the Snowman ☃
I love it ❤ thanks
Give me a female voice! This song is meant to be sung by women, so even if your arrangement is good it gives me the creeps.
Is that a recorder?
Yes - descant and tenor recorders.
@@Timmakesmusic so not the cheap ones we got back in elementary then?
@@Minisoderr the smaller descant one is relatively good quality, although not top of the range by any means. The larger tenor one is an old wooden one I found in a charity/thrift shop. It's of a kind used by schoolchildren back in the day, so it probably was played by elementary kids at some point!
This is gorgeous!
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it.
Mandalorian, is that you?
Awesome!
This is fab Tim!
Thanks. Have a wonderful Christmas!
Pretty amazeballs!
Thank you. Happy Christmas to you!
Such a beautiful arrangement x
Thank you very much. Happy Christmas!
Beautiful.
Thanks. Have a lovely Christmas!

One of my favorite songs of the season and you did an amazing job!
Thank you! Happy Christmas!
Humanity must prioritize inventing a time machine so we can test out these songs on medieval peasants. I NEED to see their reaction.
I'm sure they'd be down with it!
Using y instead of þ in Gothic script is a rookie mistake.
You can blame the adoption of the moveable-type printing press for that. Thorns (þ) haven't been a thing in printed English text since the 1450s. 😆

Excellent work, this was fun !
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it!
This is incredible. I'd love to hear some actual medieval music this is inspired from. Any recs?
The opening is plainchant style. If you search for 'plainchant' or 'plainsong' you'll find examples like this one: ruclips.net/video/kK5AohCMX0U/видео.html The main part of the song is more like a regular folk medieval song or ballad. You can find lots of examples online but here's a video with a selection: ruclips.net/video/NNFcEGPr-5k/видео.html and another one here: ruclips.net/video/pT2bo03onUY/видео.html
