Just a heads up, when you use an SAS drive, you need an HBA controller like another user mentioned, but you'll also find that when you plug them into SATA power, the drives won't come on, it's because the 3rd pin has voltage to it which is used by certain servers / controllers to shut the drive down, you can either use kapton tape over the pin, or a cleaner method is using a molex to sata adapter for the power which will eliminate the power on that pin and allow the drive to come on. I've been using SAS drives and an HBA adapter in my security system, it's much cheaper than buying normal drives, and I can usually find used 14tb drives for around $70 usd.

@@Xclub40X Just had a quick look through your recent videos to be sure I hadn't missed an update on it. Please let us know how things turn out with the drives. Also another heads up, I find HGST type drives very cheap on popular auction sites as well. They will work with an HBA / SAS controller, the same power plug issue applies to them as well.
I have one as well. It came with the Celeron but by chance I had the compatible i3 in my part bin. Upgraded the ram as well and now is running our local Minecraft server.

Curious, why are you using RDC instead of just creating an SMB share of the desktop folder and mounting it as a network share on your workstation?

@@Xclub40X Its less resource heavy too, Just finished setting up a Dell R730XD with 100TB drives, and although a pain to set up, have TrueNAS running. Have upgraded the hell out of it too, as it will be a do all box, and hopefully reduce the power bill. The first thing I did was dealt with the noisy fans. Python script to the rescue. It it now no louder than a modern fridge when the compressor is running - just a soft hum in the background.

Tried this on a Gen 7,but connectors on drive and bay are different. Same conclusion as above, needs SAS controller.

Hi, to use the SAS drives you need a SAS controller like the H222 (HBA) or P222 (hardware RAID). The later can be configured to act as a HBA. The onboard controller is SATA only.

@@Xclub40X P420 & P822 work also in Gen 8. I would recommend adding a fan to the heatsink though. The microserver doesnt have the airflow required to keep them cool.

I have to order another processor for more power in order to upgrade the hardware. . . It's the software I upgraded from server 2019 to server 2022

Only drawback is this is not rechargeable, but then again having to mess around with internal batteries on rechargeable devices is another level altogether. . . So I suppose we can see this one as a win

well there is some good news in that I have found a custom ROM image to boot the Hudl. However I need to check over this software and actually test it on a device before I go ahead and make a full RUclips video on the matter, but provisionally there is a fix for the problem you have. This shouldn't take too long assuming I can get one of my Hudls working again because they have been put away for so long the batteries may have degraded. If this is the case then I will purchase a replacement unit next week, and we can then go ahead with the video. I hope this helps and I look forward to hearing from you soon.
I have this server, learnt about ILO on this, Upgraded the CPU and Ram. Put a SSD in the optical tray. Use it as a plex server. great unit.
