Piano Accordion player for many years and a performer for the last few with The Stowes. (You can find the band channel by searching 'The Stowes Music')
I love playing music, particularly Cornish and Irish Trad music and in recent times have been experimenting with my own tunes. I have decided to set up this channel because:
1. I would like to give something back. I have never had any music lessons and do not read music. I therefore learn by listening, with RUclips being a key part of 90% of the tunes i learn.
2. I'm very uncomfortable playing to a camera so i am doing this to push myself to be better.
3. I'm currently in Lockdown due to Covid 19 and am becoming very bored.
I look forward to engaging with people of similar interests and i hope my videos will be of value to some of you.
I also work closely with a world class recording studio and am available for session work and remote recording.

Drunken Sailor Demo on Piano Accordion
A brief demo of a song that we are asked for often during gigs.
Drunken Sailor is also a popular choice for those starting out on the accordion so here it is in Em and Am, slower to begin with then speeding up. Bonus points if you can spot the jazzy note 😉

First post in a little while as we have been busy preparing for festival season, but this is a new one I’ve learnt. Still refining but it’s a great time that I first heard being played by the legend that is Alan Kelly. Played on my Serenellini 343 MW.

Well known Naval tune and of course the basis and inspiration for Mike Oldfield’s Blu Peter Theme tune! (Had to look down abit more with this one as I don’t play it very often 🤣) The Sailor’s Hornpipe, played on my Serenellini 343MW Piano Accordion.

My version of the traditional Irish Jig - The Bohola Jig. It is also known under other names such as Seamus Cooley’s Jig. This version is similar to that of Jimmy Keane’s, which is my favourite rendition. Played on my Serenellini 343 MW Piano Accordion.

Junior Crehan’s Jig, also know as the Luachrachan’s Jig is an Irish jig from County Clare, compared by the great Junior Crehan. This is one that I’ve only just learnt, having heard it played by Jimmy Keane and Pat Broaders AKA Bohola. It needs a little sharpening up with practise but it’s lovely to play! Played on my Serenellini 343MW Piano Accordion.

The Boscastle breakdown is a traditional Cornish Hornpipe and is a form of Cornish step dancing. It has a deliberately simple chord structure to allow for variations, intended as a conversation between dancer and musician.

Thank you Louise, that’s very kind 😊 I would say listen to as many players as you can and identify what you like about them. Over time, you can use all of these influences to develop your own unique style. For Irish music specifically, focus on the melody. Start slow and build up. There’s a ton of resources online - I often use videos on RUclips for learning new tunes. Don’t worry if it doesn’t click right away and always remember, there’s no room for perfection in playing music 😉
