This is masterful the best account of the 9th there is.

1st movement begins solemnly enough, and the 2nd and 3rd theme groups are fine. But Herr Jochum commits the unforgivable sin of rushing the climaxes, especially the last one. I prefer readings that maintain the solemnity and mystery throughout. Scherzo: I like Jochum's tempo and style here. I especially like that he starts the Trio at a real *Schnell*. Interesting that he didn’t make more of the written *accelerando*.

Maravillosa interpretación. Kubelik es un grande en todo, especialmente en Mozart.

Sublime grabación histórica. Irrepetible porque no está viciada por las fantasías de tantos intérpretes modernos y su marketing. Puro arte, pura música.

One of the best performances of this symphony ever recorded. Superb.

It is amazing what can be achieved by a conductor who sticks with the same orchestra for a quarter century, and also happens to be a musical genius. This is the most galvanic, jaw-dropping performance of the 9th that I have ever heard. My God, what a razor-sharp precision instrument Szell built! The playing in this performance is extraordinary-surpassing in its intensity anything I have heard from the great orchestras of Vienna, Berlin, and London. The 4th movement features a chorus directed by the best in the business: Robert Shaw. What’s not to like?

Why could Walter at age 80 play this symphony like a young man! He really knew and understood how Mozart felt when he wrote this symphony although in Mozart’s era playing such as this was not usual. Bruno Walter ‘s is always my best playing.
