I come from a Defence background ...Major factor why this field is lacking behind is as the value of the profession what it was before along with the wages is still same what is was way back then at sea. see, you just told cadets getting 500-600$ nowadays. whereas , if you are familiar with the news 8th Pay commission bill is passed and will come in to force from 2026 , After pay Commission a normal Sailor in Indian Navy would get about 45-50k (i am here taking about sailor , for officers as a cadet its way more than that about(50-65k). We noticed Growth in every sector, IT Officials wages, Growth in Defence sector , But Shipping remains same. Here, i am not talking about Captains, Chief Engineers. Many Seafarers leave this field after becoming 2nd mates, 2nd Eng. in doing some Business. We can't compare Defense sector and Merchant Navy. Defense(officers) mai your signature has a value , Merchant Navy mai value sirf port tak seemit hai. Mehangai jaise jaise badi hai...vaise vaise sab central officials ki salary badi hai...Baki IT sector mai Salaries ke sath sath bhaut sare perks hai families ko lekar, But in Merchant Navy mai sirf salary aur kuch nhi...M.navy mai provident funds vala scam we all know.

Can marine engineers shift towards port management jobs later or without going on board ships can i pursue Port management jobs by pursuing a masters?

One of my uncle told me not to pursue Marine Engineering. He is also a Marine Engineer. He told that this career is facing huge unemployment rates and many cadets are restless because of not getting jobs due to large number of candidates to amount of ships. But i always wanted to pursue this career. What would you suggest me being an experienced marine engineer? I am from Bangladesh and we are having visa issues which is the main reason for not getting work at foreign companies. I will be waiting for your kind and wise reply... .

An interesting perspective here . However, does even the STCW take into consideration changing technologies? With an industry as regulated as maritime is , why is it that we still have fatal maritime accidents , which is eventually attributed to operational errors or lack of experience, competence or both . So many second mates and third mates have become only paper work champions ( especially indian officers ), and lack the zeal to hard work. Have never had many ships unfortunately, whete both master and chief officer were both happy and contented with all junior officers ( similar problems lie on the engine dept ).
