it's interesting to note that the Piper's are still entitled to wear the London Irish caubeens with the cap badge on the right hand side in a unique fashion ...

Just one thing, I don't understand two flag guards run to the standard-bearer. That's broken the rythm and harmony of the whole and gives a bad feeling. What a pity. Public thinks that's a mistake or an oversight and, of course, it wasn't one. Just five seconds to give flag guards orders to take the position, it could be better with a good impress. It's just a detail but the devil hides behind it. So ... the foreign public won't laugh about it and it won't think like a mess like today.

They are supposed to do that. They are known as “Escorts”. Usually an Escort comprises of 2 Corporals. Whenever the command given by the Regimental Sarge Major “Out, the escort!”, either one of them shout in response “ Sir!”, and the 2 of them must run all the way to the front to “protect” the officer.

@@youtubeaccount5738 that’s true.. They do that when regiments guard without colours as well. I guess in that case they do protect the officer - unless the officer symbolises something. I’m not too confident though.

Its a easy job to identify from the rear of their tunic. At 3:24 you can see the rear of the tunics and a clear three buttons.

Cand- it is not a Royal Standard, it is the Regimental Colours or flag which would traditionally be carried into battle. They have the names of locations of past battles on most of them and are a sacred symbol of those who fought and died in those battles. Usually 2 soldiers from the back of the group will march out and run up to 'escort the colours' or protect it, but not sure where the two were running too or why witout seeing the rest of the video.

I know it’s been eight years since you asked but the first piece of Pipe music is « The Dawning of the Day » . It is an old Irish song and was used as a duty tune by most Irish Regiments. Some lyrics added in the 1960s(?) and made famous by Luke Kelly. It’s worth a read on Wikipedia 😊 I hope you read this! All the best.

Interesting choice of slow march! Normally some kind of regimental music is used at that point. Has 'Royal Standard' got any particular significance does anyone know?
