In one of the episodes in season 3, Akutagawa gives his coat to Atsushi while they're fighting the big tree thing (I honestly forgot). I'm not really sure if it means something but it feels like a tiny little thing that could have a little meaning. Yknow, cus Akutagawa used to be Dazais apprentice but now Atsushi is. Idk if just felt like it could have some meaning.😭

Viewed through a queer lens, Edward the Emu can be seen as a story about identity and self-acceptance. Throughout the book, Edward tries to adopt the identities of other animals-first the seals, then the lions, and finally the snakes-each representing societal pressures to conform. These animals might symbolise the various expectations placed on queer individuals, whether it’s trying to fit into heteronormative roles, performing masculinity, or exploring different identities within the queer community. None of these identities feel right for Edward, as they don’t reflect his true self. Edwina, towards the end of the story, could be interpreted as Edward’s conscience or inner self, reminding him that he doesn’t need to change or conform to fit in-he’s fine just as he is. Alternatively, Edwina might represent Edward’s first genuine romantic connection, someone who sees and accepts him for who he truly is. In either case, the story illustrates a powerful message: that self-acceptance and authenticity are far more valuable than trying to mould oneself into what others expect.

Thank you! I used to think like this about every story I read, but my teachers made me think I was wrong and I should just go directly to the point, but now I believe that I should see the whole picture.

god, american schools do NOT teach literary analysis well anymore, so I really appreciate this exploration of it as someone trying to get into it for personal enjoyment! also, for the example analysis: Edward is showing the anhedonia that social isolation & a lack of intimate relationships, platonic or romantic, can cause a person. his life has become boring, and it seems that nothing can stave off that deep sense of boredom. in this state, he sees the seals: their life seems perfect, but he falsely assumes that the reason they are so happy is because of the external attention they get from the attendees of the zoo. in an effort to emulate this, he joins them, saying "the seals are the best, anybody can tell, so tomorrow, I'll just be a seal as well." Edward does manage to have fun with the seals, but when one person states that they prefer the lions, he believes that the lions have the most validation in the zoo, so he joins them, saying "the lion's the best, anybody can tell, so tomorrow, I'll just be a lion as well". he once again has fun with them, however, when one man says that he prefers the snakes, Edward joins them, saying "if the snakes are the best things, and that's what they say, then tomorrow, I'll just be a snake for the day." one more time, he has fun with them, but one more person says that they actually prefer the emu, making Edward have his major epiphany: the opinions of these humans have no bearing on who is living the best life at the zoo, as every animal is equally capable of the same love, and that love is not a zero sum game where only one species wins. this finally gives Edward the confidence to return to his Emu self, saying "if the emu's the best, then that's easy then! tomorrow, I'm Edward the emu again!" this comes with one final question: if the external validation of other people was not what made these other animals live happily, what did? and then, he realizes what he had been missing: social connection. an intimate relationship with another emu, Edwina. he finally realizes that he had another to confide in, who he knows will understand him, and accept and love him fully. this really hit home for me as an american who'd literally never heard of this story. nowadays, especially under modern unfettered capitalism with social media as an integral part of daily life, the only measures of success that are valued nowadays are tangible measures of external validation, the exact thing that this book warns will never work to please yourself or even please most other people. the message is clear: if you do not commit to loving yourself & joining a community you love, you have no base to live on, & you drift aimlessly, trying and failing to please the whole world, losing yourself in the process.

Great video! So simple- yet it connected to much. Sometimes you think the literature exam requirements came out of no where. But by linking them to this framework it provided much more clarity. And made it more meaningful!

I really enjoy how you don't take about 'the author's intention' through your lenses. It's all about how YOU read stories! Key aspect of analysis that is hardly brought up in school until you reach university. I'm a literature major but I love having a refresh on the skills that are subconscious to me so I can teach others - stellar video!

Great video! I have a small nitpick that though. At the end of second notebook he was not coughing up blood. Yozo did have damage to his lungs and he was coughing but the blood came from a pimple he popped and he then goes on to use this to his advantage when the officer points it out. But where this is important is the judge calls out his bluff by asking “is that real?” which shocks Yozo. The second person in his life to call out one of his lies. If I recall correctly him coughing up blood in the snow was actually the first time he coughs up blood.

32:06 I'm bad at explaining stuff but I think Nikolai's exaggerating his emotions just so that no one knows how he truly feels, and he covers up his eye, just like PM Dazai, and that probably represents he's hiding something or his true self???

Hello all, I’m a creator here on RUclips who covers books, novels in particular. Right now I’m doing a series on 1985’s classic novel ‘Less Than Zero’. The book is about a college kid named Clay who comes back to his hometown of Los Angeles on Christmas break. Once he gets back home he has to manage things with his ex-girlfriend who’s still in love with him and deal with the disturbing depravity and godlessness his friends take part in not to mention battling his addiction to cocaine. I also have a book ranking video on my channel. If any of this sounds interesting to you I encourage you to check my videos out and hit that subscribe button. Thank you, God bless and have a good day.
