@@nouraahmad7376 aww 🙏 thanks!! Have a fantastic year!
Thank you for your video. Do you have any advice on how to help your non-readers, below grade level readers, since you can't really slow down and help them. Thank you.
@@joshsepeda4334 This is a horrible curriculum for non readers. The first thing I did was to talk to the parents of those kids and explain the situation. Then I created a package of material (at their level) for them to work at home or in centers. Parents have to be committed to work with you as a team. The non reader kids will never be able to work the way Amolify is designed unless they catch up on their reading skills. I also focused on certain skills more with them instead of all at once. I focused mostly on vocabulary, basics of plot, basics of informational text. Small steps. Good luck my friend!
Very helpful ideas thank you!

First grade Immersion teacher. Question do you still do reading groups with this program?
@@MaricelaArce-u6q This program is not really designed to work in groups! It’s mostly whole class. However, I still do reading groups and small groups several times per week but I teach 5th! I would think that as a first grade teacher you just do reading groups but don’t really count on this textbook as your resources unless it’s mandatory.
@5thGradeOasis can i get a copy of your performance sheet ! I would love to use this for my first time teaching in 5th grade.

Do you just read off the book while teaching? I wanted to do slides but immediately figured it’s so much work 😢
@@shanellleyva1635 Hi! Thanks for you comment! I do read sometimes and other times I just say the info in my own words because it’s way too much! In the beginning I was preparing my own slides but it was taking me so much time! Later on we complained so our district prepared slides for us to present and that’s what I kept using. This curriculum is a “killer” 😆 so you’ll have to really use your judgment with it! Good Luck! 👍
@@5thgradeoasis thank you so much! I am a first year teacher so this is what I’ll be getting into 😭

Thank you so so much for this! I kept looking for a detailed resource that could help understand what was essential to my classroom and this is it! I'm starting my first year teaching in 5th grade and your videos have been so helpful and soothing. I hope you are able to post more :)
You are very welcome! I’m glad it helped! I enjoy doing videos and being of service 😊
I'm taking it right now and It is horrible!! I agree with you that their is too much info for the short amount of time. Some of the teachers are NOT good teachers.
Hi there! I hope you can cope and get through it in in piece lol! Good luck! 🫣
Love your video. Can I use their language to teach them English?
Yes! There are many cognates you can use to begin teaching them English using Spanish words they already know! I have a video on cognates in my channel! I hope it helps and I wish you a great school year! Thanks for your comment 💕
@@5thgradeoasis Thank you. That was very helpful 😊
I am also a veteran teacher and have been using "I do, you do, we do" for years. I am always self reflecting and looking for ways to improve my practice. This is how I found your video. Your video gave me many ideas but what I most appreciated was your easy to follow structure for using this GRR strategy. I feel like I need to be more efficient in this area and your video gave me some great ideas on how to easily tweak what I'm doing to be more effective and efficient. I subscribed and look forward to seeing more of your teaching strategies. Thank you!
Thank you so much for your kind words! I’m glad to be of service and I hope you have a fantastic school year! Even as veteran teachers I’m still learning new things as well! A true teacher never stops learning 💕

just get coloured journals
Yes 👍🏻 that works too!
Isn't a lot of this more about History?
Hi 👋🏻 yes it is! Because History is a branch of Social Studies.. in 5th grade you will most likely teach USA 🇺🇸 history.
Thank you for your help. IS this curriculum content universal in the US?
Hello 👋🏻 thank you for your question. Curriculum is based on the standards that each state has. Most standards are similar because USA History doesn’t “change”.. however, some states may choose to focus more on some themes than others. I suggest you check out the Social Studies standards for your state and see what their focus is. Take care 👍🏻

do you recommend reading parts of the book daily or just doing one read?
Hello there! It all depends on the amount of time you have for your class and the academic level of your students. I’ve done some stories in parts. Others I’ve done at once. I think just the poems I’ve done in one read. Some of the texts are above grade level so I suggest you do those in parts. If you have a long class period then you can read it at once but then do close reading. Good luck!
She basically showed us what books she used. She didn't show us how to use HMH into the curriculum.
Hello there! The intention of the video is to guide teachers through the components so that you can use it to teach. In order to see and example lesson you’ll need your coach to teach you.
I believe this is okay if the students themselves have Hispanic heritage but if they don't I feel like you shouldn't force them to do it since they really have no connection to these cultures you can maybe have him do a history report or something about it over the history of it but if they have no significant ties to this culture I feel like it could be hard for them to have it to it instead if they don't I feel like they should be doing a report over Hispanic History Month or something like that
Hello there and thank you for your opinion. Well, we have different point of. view as teachers. I feel it is important to teach students about all cultures regardless if they have the heritage or not. Just like we do during “Black History Month” I assign a project to everyone about important African Americans, and during November “Native American Month” I also assign each student to research a twice regardless if if part of their heritage or not. A true social studies/history teacher knows this is important. Take care!!
Where do we get the digital bellringer you have?
I create them using Canva.. but Lakeshore has a printed version if you can’t prepare them daily.
I have been using HMH for 4 yrs, starting year 5. There are MANY components, but overwhelming for teachers to "piece" together a good road map for the classroom. It is defiantly overwhelming to new teachers who are learning the material and how to write lesson plans. I dove in determined to find the pieces that were the best fit for my students. I am about the same with you on which stories I use. I also love that I have the option to assign Spanish and English. I really like Writable and Amira, but the district took it away. I did pair some of the stories with other novels. For example, Willie B. is great with The One and Only Ivan and The True Story of Ivan (Children's book) It was such a great way to tie in fiction and nonfiction. The students enjoyed doing a group project on the characters I bought from Teachers Pay Teachers. This year we will add a small research assignment on the History of the Atlanta Zoo and write and argumentative paper.
Great job! Keep on tailoring it to your kids needs and what you think it’s appropriate! HMH is a complicated curriculum for everyone but specially newcomers.. it’s sad they took away Amira and Writable because they were great supports for ESL kids! We don’t use HMH anymore, We are using another curriculum called Amplify which is even worse! Thanks for all you do!! Have a fantastic school year!
Thank you for your video. I teach 5th grade ELAR and have several new non-English speaking students. I am able to let them listen to our stories in Spanish and English. I have bi-lingual students that I have paired them with, use google translate and say Hi app to communicate, and have began placing labels in the classroom. I also have spanish Library books available. Some concerns I have are making sure my student helpers are not losing their own classroom time by helping the other student. (I do not speak or understand Spanish) and finding materials on their interest level to make them feel a part of the classroom community and getting grades from them.
Hello there and thanks for your comment! Just give the student time and I’m sure he will catch up English quicker than you think! Maybe you can pair him also with another student so that the one helping don’t get behind.. however all these other things your implementing are great! Sounds like you are a great teacher who cares! Good luck!
Thank you teacher, I have to give a demo class for a potential english teacher job for 5th and 6th graders and want to be prepared, covering all bases. I am a rookie teacher and my previous experience was over five years ago. Great video. 😊
Thank you so much for watching my video! Good luck! I’m glad it helped! I hope you do get the job.. sending good vibes to you! Have a fantastic school year!

Thank you for sharing! This is my second year using this curriculum and I still feel like I am not using it to the best of my ability. I also agree about the stories, some of them are so long and it takes us forever to finish them!
Hello there and thank you for your comment! This is a challenging curriculum, specially if you have students below grade level, so it’s not you! We used it for three years and the district decided to change it right away. Good luck and have a fantastic school year!
Thank you for sharing your ten tips and suggesting additional activities. Our textbook ends with the Civil War, but after watching your video I think I would like to continue with territorial expansion and events in the 1900s.
Hello there! Thanks for your comment! I totally agree with you, keep on with the 1900’s if you can! There are many important things to cover from that time period and great biographies too! Have a fantastic school year!
