Marlene Dietrich - MEIN BLONDES BABY
Marlene Dietrich had a major hand in the creation of her movie costumes. Here are some examples of how she used white ruffels, bows, lace, veils, flowers and sparkels to create texture and silhouettes that would catch the ligth most effectivly.
"You don´t work with Dietrich-you work for her."
Edith Head

Belli gli abiti da sera di giorno elegantissima😊
I keep watching this (aiming for about a million views 😅) and it occured to me I never said how exquisite the editing is. The pictures go perfectly with this song and I read (Eve Arnold's account) that, when they were taken, Dietrich came to the studio accompanied by Jean Gabin and by her astrologer. And the recording session started at midnight, as per the said astrologer' suggestion. For some reason, I find this endearing, just like knowing she cooked or knitted or was afraid of germs. Always nice finding the human and mundane element in people we admire 😊
Here is a (very rough) translation of then lyrics of this song ,which was first recorded by Claire Waldoff on November 4, 1910. Marlene knew Waldoff from her early cabaret times in Berlin. The whole of Berlin is crazy about my legs Recently, an old aunt told me Listen girl, sensibly Here's some good advice from a relative Just leave the men alone at all times The lazy heads just want to show off And then you end up with a mess I cried out: I won't let myself be seduced I stand them up every time And yet they run all over the place All men chasing after me Nature has given me The best legs in Berlin The whole of Berlin is crazy about my legs With my legs I have broken many hearts And when I show my legs full of intelligence Then I beat every competition from the field In the amusement park, looking at the latest A gentleman led me to the wobbly stairs Then the popinjay became quite brazen So I gave him a slap on the head He wasn't angry and took me to supper But under the table, oh just think He wanted to flirt with my legs right away Telegraphing without a wire started And full of anger I screamed like mad You must be chukoo, You crazy lunatic! Then he said, "I beg you, please The whole of Berlin is crazy about your legs With your legs you have broken my heart I said to the villain With my legs you won´t do a thing Students, counts and also all the experts They are always looking at my legs And a bandmaster shouted unabashedly There is music in your legs Now and then i'm strolling through zoo The elephant roars loudly joyfully Even all the monkeys are starting trouble Waving their hands through the bars The other day I stopped ,having a laugh You should have seen it The guard came immediately And the old man screamed angrily The whole of Berlin is crazy about your legs All the monkeys' hearts are totally broken To which I replied full of peace of mind You old dork, they´re gonna break yours too Because The whole of Berlin is crazy about my legs With my legs I have broken many hearts And when I show my legs full of intelligence Then I beat every competition from the field
In quei tempi il fascino della persona😊
Gambe primo piano😊👍
❤❤❤
I did not know this and I am amazed, had no idea she was so good...the phrasing is just perfect (my favourite, of hers, are her French songs, Moi, je m'ennuie and Assez, but I this too is such a gem)
Dietrich in love... must have been a sight to behold 🌞 especially since Gabin was nothing like the 'intelectual' types she usually preferred. Fascinating - and so sad that they parted.
The woman was pure class ❤❤
Stilosa come sempre😊
Versatile creatrice elegante 👍
Belli i costumi e stoffe di quei tempi
love the Ninotchka reference! and the fact that you managed to find pictures of Dietrich wearing pretty much the same hat Western decadence indeed 😁
Allegedly Marlene and Ernst Lubitsch had a heated dispute over that hat when they were doing "Angel" together.I don´t remember the details unfortunatly but it was reported the discussion wheter to wear it ore not led to some costly reshooting and a fallout between Lubitsch and Marlene.
@@nicolassiegel7296I did not know that, thank you for sharing. Didn't Lubitsch also directed Ninotchka? I wonder if the hat controversy, with Dietrich, had anything to do with choosing a similar hat for Garbo, years later... silly speculation, of course, but makes you wonder...so many things we see in films, without ever knowing the back story
Affascinanti tutti e due Cooper bello giovane 😊
real ... ? Greta garbo at beginning and end.....?lol
Fabulous vid 👌 and song . I loved the movie ( Martin Romanaque ) even tho sadly I can't speak French !!... It's a great performance by its stars 🌟 🤩.... thanks for sharing this
LIFE Magazine's review of MANPOWER stated, "As the clip-joint babe, Marlene Dietrich sings a husky song, bakes a batch of biscuits, &, as has been customary in recent successes, gets slapped around." THE NEW YORK TIMES said, "And the inevitable lady in the case...is none other than Marlene Dietrich, sporting every danger signal save a 'High Voltage' sign. She does what she has to do well, but she's in to make trouble--& that's all." Edward G. Robinson was top-billed, marking the first time since MOROCCO that Dietrich did not receive first billing. Her other co-star, George Raft, thought she was "the most elegant woman that ever lived", & an affair with Raft soon followed. After his passing in 1980, an inscribed framed photograph of Dietrich was one of the few items found in his bedroom.
George Raft remembered telling Gary Cooper: " I´d give a years salary for one night"
An impossibly BRILLIANT montage! All one can possibly say is, "Nicolas! Nicolas! NICOLAS!" The last word, however, must go to Richard Lawton in his book, A WORLD OF MOVIES. Regarding publicity stills from DESIRE & ANGEL, Lawton boldly & perceptively states: "The cigarette--ubiquitous in every movie where the very soul of sophistication was sought. Surely future historians will look back on this bizarre habit without comprehension. Only when they see Dietrich on film will their eyes open in wonder, & the delectable past-time become fashionable once more." Thank you, Nicolas, for, once again, opening our eyes in wonder at THE Most Iconic Smoker in Film History!
Thank you so very much for your kind words! Much appreciated. Even more thanks for sharing all the phantastic quotes you provide. One of the best things of diving into the Dietrich universe is to learn about all the gifted craftsman she worked with and learn about what they had to say about working with (well,...for) this once in a lifetime personality. Your comments made my day. Keep shining on!
From THE HURRELL STYLE by George Hurrell & Whitney Stine: I shot her many times. All of the sessions were very long, with many costume changes & many different hairdos. She felt that she knew exactly what was right for her. She would assume a pose, check herself in a mirror, & say, "All right, George, SHOOT!" And I shot. She was the total perfectionist. It was no use trying to catch her off guard--there was no such thing with Marlene. Everything was studied. Still, I must admit, the results were some of the best shots I had ever taken. Years later, when she was performing in nightclubs, I did a sitting with her. She was the same polite, concerned woman. Her bone structure still took the light as it had in the old days. But when she returned the proofs to me, they were marked all over with fine lines, indicating what should be removed by the retoucher. She shook her head sadly, "You don't take pictures like you used to, George." "But Marlene, " I said, & also shook my head sadly, "I'm 15 years older!"
From PEOPLE WILL TALK, a conversation between George Hurrell & John Kobal: GH: That brings me to Dietrich. For example, she insisted--in the beginning I refused to have it there, but finally, "Oh, what the hell, let her"--she insisted on a full-length mirror so she could pose in front of it. The first couple of times I'd say I didn't have a mirror in the studio, but finally we got one. JK: Why were you so against it? Did it interfere with you? GH: It's not so much that, but they get so set--a foot out here, a foot there, always doing things like this--"All right now, take it." Well, if I didn't like it I'd say, "Well, I don't like that." So then we were off on rough track. I photographed her a lot at my studio on the Strip, & I photographed her at Paramount...a number of times.
Great themed photo show !
Wow! Where did you get that clear sound recording of Melbourne show ?
Some generous soul shared it here on youtube. I "borrowed" it because it´s a prime example how good Marlene could be as a song stylist.
@nicolassiegel7296 oh, I just thought it's another source, thought it is sounds clearer than I've heard
Per THE COMPLETE LYRICS OF COLE PORTER, edited by Robert Kimball, this song was originally published in June of 1927. The editor adds, "This song was probably written for a summer show at Edmond Sayag's Ambassadeurs Cafe. It was made famous by Marlene Dietrich in Alfred Hitchcock's film STAGE FRIGHT (1950) & became a part of Miss Dietrich's repertoire." The Published Verse is: I've a beau, his name is Jim, He loves me & I love him, But he tells me I'm too prim, That means I'm too slow. I let him rant, I let him rave, I let him muss my permanent wave, But when he says, "Let's misbehave," My reply is "No!"
There is actually 78 rpm recording of another artist from 40s, forgot who. You could find on Discogs who, it is also on RUclips. Words are different too than Marlene's version
@@savelysavely2483 You made me look this up: There a 3 recordings available before Marlene made this song her own: Frankie Trumbauer and His Orchestra - Vocal by Fredda Gibson 1940 Madelyn Russell with Mitch Miller's Orchestra 1949 Dottie O'Brien and The Savannah Seven 1950 (all available on youtube)
@nicolassiegel7296 oh, thank you!
They NEVER will. . . , but it's our duty to keep up fighting stubborn stupidity, falling for ANY fascist RULERS. It might turn lifethreatening one day... Thank you Mr. Nicolas Siegel🤝🤝🤝 Btw. : I am an average German Guy.
Lovely song by beautiful Marlene Dietrich...and mostly in colour photography too ....thanks for sharing ❤
Eternal femme fatale! Simply fatastic! From Brasil
Thanks so very much for putting this together. I know all these stunning film costumes but had never seen the sketches. It is a real treat to see them side by side, and with the sound of her voice. What a star she is. ❤
Wundervoll. Danke!
Freut mich wenn´s gefällt!
Phonetically, it sounds like Marlayna Di-etrik

How do you get these?! 🥰😲 Thank you!
They were all part of various documentarys
I've never seen these before, thank you!! ✨ The song, I know - and love her version, although she doesn't seem to include it in her shows later on, I wonder why...
Thank You. 0:25 ! 😪 I don’t care if it’s Dean Martin too Mighty Merle haggard or Jonny Cash and Dylan. Today It’s like MUSIC lost it soul
I swear one can tell, from their 7 films together, von Sternberg loved Dietrich... just the way he uses light/ shadow on her face... yes, it is public knowledge they were lovers, but to actually see it captured on film is quite remarkable. I might read too much into it, of course, but I can also sense the difference in films Dietrich made with other directors... take all the westerns for example...Destry was really good, but there was no magic to Dietrich's character, no 'loving' light... or 'Stage fright' - she was glam as ever, but a sort of petty, 'plain' glam, rather than the tragic, 'out of this world' glamour she had achieved with Sternberg...
I totally agree with you. I think there was never anybody so lovingly and skillfully presented on the moviescreen as Marlene was immortalized by von Sternberg What a master of ligtht and composition he was. And Marlene had the bonestructure and charisma to reflect his love back onto the screen. Not to mention the discipline to endure a million takes till every little shadow of the eyelashes was perfetto!
She used at this time to be beautiful. But she aged badly
Марлен Королева, второй такой не будет никогда, обажаю Марлен❤❤❤
Marvelous ❤
I almost learned German from her movies…❤️❤️❤️
The music dumped on this video "dishonors" Dietrich and Sternberg
Ah Marlene
Fascinating unique. Wonderful Marlene
