I make ambient and experimental music.
I make a sandwich for DIYRE to celebrate their new Neve 1073 mic pre clone
About four years ago one of my favorite studio equipment makers said they would be releasing two coveted pieces of gear -- a SSL style bus compressor and a Neve 1073 style mic preamp. When Peterson Goodwyn of DIYRE announced this on Instagram I joked "if you do that I will buy you a sandwich."
Today is the day that I deliver on that promise.
As always if you like what I'm up to here, please support me by buying some music here:

If you can't do that, you can always stream my music on all of the streaming services.

I've gotten a lot busier with work, so I need to scale back on the informational videos. But I can't stop making music! I've been slowly working on two albums in parallel (kind of a bad idea actually) and this song came about as I was experimenting with a bunch of gear. So, while working on two albums I guess I'll end up making the equivalent of a third by the time I'm done? Anyway, I love how ...

Hey y'all it's been ages since I've posted a video. I've been busy doing my day job, recording some other bands (not electronic music) and doing some performances. This video came about because Evan and I met at a cool open mic I performed at called Resonant Frequencies (resfreq.org). We got to talking about how we were both learning our way around the Octatrack and thought it would be cool to ...

I've been traveling and working a lot this summer and it's been challenging to find the time and energy to work on music. But, while on an extended work trip to Seattle I decided to bring along this minimal setup that proved to be really inspiring. It's not a limiting setup and I got lots of fun surprises out of it and made loads of tracks. This feels like the beginnings of an album. As I was c...

I'm really busy with work and other music projects lately but still squeezing in songs. This piece started by playing around with me singing into the Yamaha VSS-200 adorable little microphone. Then I started adding layers. The main approach I took in this piece was running through the Hologram with no dry signal so that whatever I played would be audible moments later. It challenged me to use t...

Hey there, I'm back from vacay and getting ready to get out and do some performances. I'm focused on open mics for now as that's a shorter set and good way to work things out. Also let's face it, no one is asking me to do a full night of music either :) Anyway, in this video are my thoughts on how I get started performing live as well as thoughts on the value of sound design, resampling and col...

Hi everyone, I'm about to go on a long holiday so this will be the last piece I post for a while. This piece was composed by tracking long improvised tracks without any edits, just performing along to previous improvisations. This track came together as a result of messing around. I do so much of this stuff where I just experiment for hours and then I listen back later and get more solid ideas. So this bit I'm sharing today came from a loop I created using the Yamaha CS-01 and the Chase Bliss Habit. As soon as I re-listened to this loop I though to myself "this needs to have a hiphop style beat." Is it a hip hop tra...

Hi, I liked your video very much! I was however wondering, can you connect the line out of eg the op-1 to the phono or radio in on the Uher? It’s different voltages right? Thanks in advance!
You absolutely can connect typical audio level sources to the Uher! I do it all the time and specifically I've done it with my OP-1. Thanks for stopping by :)
great video and nice device. sadly l live in europe and i dont think that device was sold here. do you maybe know an alternative? or maybe some place where they are more common? thanks
I don't know what cassette players in Europe have varispeed like this, but I think you can still find them on eBay and places like that. These are made in Japan so I think they did ship them to many countries.
Just one more thought, a really common cassette player that has this feature is the United States library of Congress machine. They're kind of pricey but they're very very cool

Thanks dude
There’s a workaround for using loops on this that doesn’t involve modding the machine, but the cassette. You just do a loop over both spindles, but add a rubber band for traction.
Neat!
Are you able to record music from a playlist to a tape?? My Dad has one of these but I’m not sure if I can use it for a playlist for my Walkman.
Yes you absolutely could but I really wouldn't recommend it. This isn't a machine that has like crazy good sound or anything. And also it's going to record in mono and you probably want stereo.
Just been listening, enjoying the sounds, nice work
Thanks so much mate. I'm just some guy making music for myself but it always pleases me when others like it!
@@SycamoreWillow That's the way to go. The Microcosm is super fun to play with, good to hear how it's being utilised by other people, lovely.

Soooo nice ! We used to screen Koyaanisqatsi for our early live shows with my experimental band, and it was so inspiring to play at the same time. One day we did it on a giant movie theatre and it was amazing. I am sure your show will be a blast. Have fun !

@@SycamoreWillow so true !
Wish I was closer
Oh no! I hope I didn't bum you out. Thanks for watching internet friend :)
It's no exaggeration to say that Koyaanisqatsi changed the way that I see films and the way that I hear music. It was and is an incredibly moving experience and one that has shaped my views on so many things in ways that I cannot quite put into words--perhaps that's part of it--it helped me to see that sometimes some things are better left unsaid and better expressed through image and (wordless) sound. Glass' influence cannot be overstated and your pieces are a fitting tribute. Too bad I'm in the Midwest..... Break a leg!
Wish you could be here, but thanks so much for taking the time to watch and share your thoughts! It feels good to share the love of art with good folks like you!
This is an absolute masterpiece!
OMG thanks so much!
Bought beads since I have Morphagene, and I can confirm. Beads is perfect pair for Morphagene. I literally spend an hour just with those two. Nothing in between, and modulating them. It was an awe moment and forgot the time. Very very satisfied.
Same dude. Same...
Hey, I just found your channel. Your videos are really inspirational, well explained and nicely produced. Great work! Thanks a lot for making these.
Ahhh! Thanks for your nice words!
This is cool!
Thanks my dude!
Amazing! Thanks for this awesome explanation of your box! I just got one of these recorders and I definitely want to build my own version! Just curious about your 2 TRS inputs. I see the port on the recorder is both input and output, did you connect one TRS connector to an input pin, and the other to an output pin on the DIN5?
Ahh! I just found your other video, which answered my question :) Thanks! ruclips.net/video/MvG_OXS-qVw/видео.htmlsi=ahUaL9F-XtI0KyqQ
OH hahaha, nice! Apologies I didn't have time to respond to you sooner and more personally. As you mess with the machine please feel free to comment more here or find me on the the /Hainbach subreddit where I'm one of the mods. We have a lot of great tape and test equipment nerds there.
Should post more.
Hey there, first of all thank you for stopping by to watch a video and leave such a supportive comment! I appreciate it. I will be posting more soon. Part of the reason there's been a lull is I've had a really challenging couple of years with my day job. In addition, with my free time I've been doing more live, in person stuff like performing, workshops and helping put on events. That said, I'm so glad you want to see more and I have some new stuff planned that I need to find the time to make. My ideal timeline is to have a short series of new videos coming in Jan. Take care!
Was this the 15IPS Mkii or MKI?
Great question! Mk II. I much prefer this version. I've had both.
wow, this is just the finest beauty, thank you so much.
Hey there internet stranger thanks so much for the kind words!
from where can i get these 3.5 plugs, can't find them.
Hey there, thanks for coming by! In the video I used two cables that terminate in a 3.5mm connection. Here are links to some examples: hosatech.com/products/analog-audio/interconnect-cables/specialty-interconnects/cmp-300/ hosatech.com/products/analog-audio/interconnect-cables/specialty-interconnects/cmm-300/
Love the mixing of tones here.
Thanks so much!
Ya. None of us can ever get past BOC.
Lol so true!
Great video. I've been tempted by these colour format things after building (and loving) DIYRE's OLA5 and EQP5 500 series units. Id love to see these tape saturation units compared to Sound Skulptor's TS 500 units as well. Curious if you've had the chance to give those a spin.
Hi there, thank you! I have not tried the Sound Skulptor TS500. I'm sure it is very useful so if it speaks to you I just suggest trying it and see what you think. That said for me I like the colors platform because in addition to the tape saturation color there's so many other colors that are interesting and you can chain them and per color they're pretty cheap.
Pleeeease where can I buy this box? Im an idiot with electronics. Halp! <3
Hey there! I'm gathering requests so may make another batch of these! Please DM me on Reddit. I'm u/jasongonzales23.
So I have been working very similar to you - my problem is i just record everything then have to spend hours listening through and cutting up the bits i like. You way is a lot more focused but sometimes you find the happy accidents.
Ah yeah. I've always shied away from hitting record for hours on end because the thought of going back to listen seems too daunting. As a creative person/artist I'm always trying to lower the barriers to entry for things like this. So my preference is to one of the following. - Judiciously press record whenever something interesting is going on. - If I'm letting it roll for a while, never let it go beyond a few minutes without something interesting happening. If for example 5 minutes go by and nothing got me excited I'll just delete it straight away - Also if I'm rolling and something really cool happens, as soon as I have a hand free I'll drop a marker in the project. In my DAW I just press "m" so it's really easy and even reflexive by now In general, I bias towards editing when things are fresh and not to get too sad if I lose something. New ideas and sounds are always gonna come!
@@SycamoreWillow yeah it definitely seems the best way to go but I'm firmly in the other camp lol. Just record everything and worry about it later 🥲
@@tris421 As ever if it's working for you then it is good! I hope I didn't sound pedantic or like I was "correcting" your comment. Thanks so much for watching and stopping by to say a thoughtful and kind thing.
Stumbled across your channel, just a little while ago. I like it! I think i like it because i have similar interests in that i like to use old and new gear to make interesting hybrids. I like your idea of having a sampler 'ready' to capture a sound or performance to add to an archive of sounds you may come back to. It's something that i should really be doing. I hope you don't get pressured into making content just for the sake of it. I think the idea is to make interesting content, and not feel that you have make something everyday or every week. Thanks man!
Hey there, thanks for this thoughtful comment! It's funny you mentioned feeling pressure to constantly create content. Like many others, making videos for RUclips became a nice outlet for me during lockdown. Now that we're free to move about I'm more focused on performing and somehow just generally a lot busier. In a way I'm grateful for the time during lockdown where I could focus so heavily on music. That said I'm not grateful for the pandemic of course. Anyway, I have some ideas for new videos to make but I'm in no rush. Sometimes it's just a beautiful day and you need to get outside and ride bicycles or feel the warm sun while hanging out in the park with friends. Take care!
What is that white thing on the right?
Hey there good eye that is a vintage Octava microphone. I love that little thing so much. Thanks to you for coming by!
@@SycamoreWillow Nice really cool!

I have a Akai4000d reel to record er and a yamaha Digital mixer 10xu and 6i6 interface do you no how to hook Thanks
In your case it's almost certainly just a matter of getting 4 RCA-to-TS cables. Two going into the recorder and two going out. So connecting instruments to the reel-to-reel recorder you'll only want to connect the line inputs and outputs of the reel-to-reel to your interface. I'm not familiar with your interface so I can't really give you any advice on that. But in general if you can get signal routed to the lineouts of your interface you'll be able to record to tape. If you connect the line out from your recorder to line inputs on your interface you'll be able to record the output from tape to your daw. Hope that helps let me know how it goes!
This and some other machines like the aph have the pitch slider, its basically a digital pitch shifter. It was used to pitch correct voice when slowing down or speeding up the tape. I'd love to add a dedicated play head, feedback etc and make a delay with one. Reet gnarly pitch shifting delay
Oh hell yeah. That would be great
The issue I keep having with the Morphagene is that is a pain to get it back to play at normal speed after you have tweaked with the speed knob. They should've made a virtual indent.
On the one hand I completely agree with you and beyond that I wish you could somehow get it back to an exact pitch you said I'm sure there's a way to do it but it's of course not built into the device. But on the other hand sometimes wild unpredictable devices can really force one to be creative
@@SycamoreWillow I believe Makenoise did it deliberately as it was viewed from a musique concrete perspective.
🔥🔥Picked one up in Wurzburg Germany when I was in the military. Gonna try to get it playing again. Children and grandchildren sorted the power, so it only plays when twisting the ends.
Oh yeah get it going and run it into some fun delays and verbs. You'll have so much fun. As for the power it's not hard to find replacement power supplies. If I remember correctly this one runs on anywhere between 9 and 12 volts and should have a positive center I'm not positive about that LOL pardon the pun
@Sycamore Willow Bought it back in 1982, used it when I played in a band back in the 80's. I'm taking to my computer repair guy tomorrow. Should be good after a few days. After that, grandchildren will not touch it. Lol
This is great - I came across one of those Nagra speed controls which is superb for making spacey tape delay effects but I think my machine has the speed socket as well - I’d never thought of using it to CV pitch a loop!
…just double checked and it’s just the 1/4” socket but it occurs to me I could mod my speed regulator box to include a CV in - that way I could potentially “tune” the tape speed ie pitch of the loop with the knobs and then play CV pitches in! Game changer!
I suppose my comments would make MUCH more sense if they were on the right video. Just by luck I was wittering on about Nagra and tape speed on a video about tape saturation - it probably nearly made sense. 😅
Lol I admit I was wondering! But honestly just glad to hear your thoughts. I suspect you meant these comments on a Hainbach video, right? If so that's a flattering confusion.
@@SycamoreWillow yes your interesting clip followed his one about the discovery that you can turn your Nagra into a pitchable looper with the Speed input. I love the idea of those modular tape saturation things BTW - I’ve forward them to a mate of mine who runs a studio. He’s currently struggling to restore an 8 track reel to reel. He’d be better off buying one of those racks!

I always like to emphasize that I'm just a middle aged synth dude and that someone actually engaging in my music totally makes my day. I'm always flattered and amazed that people find and like my channel. Thanks so much.
Ooo this came out right in time, my octatrack just arrived a couple days ago and I’ve been messing around with EZBOT’s templates and was looking for more creative ideas of using resampled audio from outside devices on a few projects that just need that last oomf of dynamism. Stellar work folks, gonna me trying out some of these ideas tmrw!
