A common issue for many brewers, especially when brewing lagers, is knowing when a beer has an issue with diacetyl. Large breweries might measure diacetyl levels with gas chromatography (or as total VDK levels with a spectrophotometer). A gas chromatograph or spectrophotometer might be beyond the scope of many small breweries and most homebrewers, but there is a simple test to see if your beer ...

Do you have a link to an explanation of how to correct the refractometer reading for final gravity? I prefer using a spreadsheet to do all my calculations.
Very boreing but true
I'm skeptical that 48 hrs is sufficient for complete fermentation in the 500 ml test batch, even with twice the yeast and also warmer temperature. Maybe if the OG is less than 1.060, but how about for a high gravity beer?
The links to watch the full series donโt appear to be working, can you check them please?

I love a good Kent cider. Really unique. Really informative video!
Wish i had this job.
Why would you love to hate the trappist beers?
Fun fact: The first beer, the Stouterik, translates to English as 'Noughty Boy' ;-)
It's a shame that flanders red ales didn't get a mention.
It tends to be under appreciated how the variety of Perry and cider is nearly infinite and this should be the vector for generating interest and exploration. Contrast this to the comparatively narrow range of craft beer and wine where makers are following recipes and strict varietal constraints.
A beautiful ouverture into the world of Belgian beer. I've visited 't Verzet not too long ago. The owners are guys who did indeed start out in college with a very modest operation. They are absolutely nuts about making beer, of which they make quite a variety. They did not want to partner with a big brewery because they want to do what they like without anyone calling the shots on them. They are everything that's good about Belgian beer culture. They are interested only and exclusively in making the best beer they can. It's great to see them talk about their beers, it's even better to drink some of their beers. Some of which are amazing, some of which are.... ah... more of a challenge ๐. 't Verzet: I freaking love you, guys! Geuze is indeed quite a special beer. What Tim Webb did not mention is that it is a perfect thirst quencher and it's not even close. Hot day, you're thirsty: have a Geuze. It's brilliant. I do prefer the 3 Fonteinen [3 fountains] Geuze myself. Tim Webb got one thing absolutely right: it's about balance. Anybody can ferment sugar. There's no art to that. Brewing a high-quality beer, now there, that's the challenge. Thank you for a beautiful review, Mr. Webb. I hope you enjoy our beers to your heart's content.
I've recently got into Belgian beers. Exactly what he said, LA Chouffe was my gateway into Belgian beer. It's one of my favorites. Duvel and Delerium Tremens (bad name imo) are also fantastic. High abv with a smooth taste. You can't even tell they are high abv
Delirium Tremens, as a name for the beer, is not a coincidence. It never is. It's brewn in the place I grew up in ๐.
These videos, 1 & 2, are excellent.
I remember picking perry pears in the rain from that Yellow Huffcap about 15 years ago for Mike. Wonderful week. And thanks for great interviews Adam. 11:12
Excellent breakdown of the best beer in the world. Want some cheese and beer now.
How long does this beer last once it is vented? I worked in a pub in England and when I returned to New Zealand I experimented with cask ale and found that if I casked in a draught keg and conditioned as you do in a cask I get the same cask ale that lasts up to a month or more. Cheers from the Brewers Arm in New Zealand.
Hi Lee, depending on the style cask beer has a shelf life of just under a week.
Well done Tim! Like everything you do, it's fantastic!
La Chouffe is not produced in Antwerp (Vlanderen, north of Belgium) but in Achouffe (Gaume, south of Belgium)
He didn't say it was produced in Antwerp. "It's made by a brewery based here in Antwerp." And with Achouffe owned by Duvel, he is correct. Which is correct.
if your not used to drink strong beer i advice to not drink it you will shit your self ๐คฃ
Do you know, in forty years of introducing people to sipping stronger ales, I have never come across anyone to whom that has happened. Maybe it is in the way you pour it.
Lovely video. Tough to watch without access to a beer though! Nicely done ๐๐ผ
Cracking job James, very in deprh and concise!
There is ONE trappist beer that is NOT sold commercially, and you wouldn't have been able to have it served to you (legally) where the video is shot ; and that is West-Vleteren, you can only order it on their webside (that's rather new feature, you had to phone them to order it till last year or so), and then... hold on you have to make an appointement AND give them your licenseplate number and actually DRIVE to the monastery to get your maximum of two crates of the very best beer in the world... and of course... Antwerp is NOT the place you want to visit to taste beer without a bias...
An Englishman who is an expert on Belgian beer.
Disliked! The intro is way too long!
But it can be fast forwarded if you're in a rush ๐คจ๐คท
Bedankt. Thank you for the nice overview. You defenitley made me nosi about Belgian beers.
Careful folks. My introduction cost me $22 CDN for a 330ml bottle of Wesvleteren (sp?) and its been an alcoholic spiral since then Lol.
I missed the short โkickstartโ window, but would like to contribute.
Love your presentation, I worked for a Belgian Shipping conglomerate for over 32 years and had the opportunity to visit Antwerp many times. I love their culture, their food and especially their beers. I now live in Canada and am an enthusiastic home brewer and dabble on ocassion with Belgian style beers. I am not up to professional standards of course, brewingin the basement, but can still make a fairly acceptable beer. Your video leaves me hankering to travel again and Belgian is certainly on my list. Thanks.
What a load of bollocks Camra is ? Candy sugar content is high ?
My beer buying philosophy is German day-to-day, Belgian if looking for something special and regret that Grodziskie no longer exists.

2:58 'stouterik' means someone who is naughty (=stout). 2:58 Brasserie de la Senne = Senne Brewery. The Senne or Zenne is the river that runs mostly underground through Brussels, south to north.
In older dutch ยซ stout ยป also means courageous, brave.
@@dirk2518 Yes, which explains why we were once ruled by Filips II de Stoute (1342-1404).
I have never been able to drink beer or wine until I had a lambic. I was able to have 3 full shotglasses of it and it was so delicious. I am so happy to find something I can drink and that tastes so good.
No matter who you are and if one thinks one likes beer or not, there is at least 1 Belgian beer that they will be to the liking.

I agree cask beer is the best form of beer serving but it is quite inconsistent so I stick to keg.
Excellent video presentation. I can't wait for my next visit!
