    I think we are all Fifth Business from the outside; we are all the Protaganist (Boy) from our own perspective. This is where Jung comes in. We are the ego for ourselves, and the world is our story, but we ultimately recognize we are only watching the story of others, and are bit players in that story. We are become Dunny, watcher of lives.

    Meanwhile, 8 years later, I have to comment that I agree that Tomson Highway HAS cracked the "Canadian code" as you put it. He is making our culture with his books. I just finished Permanent Astonishment, a memoir of his, and your words apply to this book as well as his fictional Kiss of the Fur Queen. Canadian culture, whatever wisp that is, surely grows out of our native voices. I was born on this land, not in a snowbank, maybe, but I still need the voices of the land like Tomson's.

    Oh hay, I just read this book and really enjoyed it, which led me to look up videos about it and here we are. I’m glad you mentioned the witch and the girl, and was disappointed they didn’t end up in the movie. I don’t think the witch cursed Eli, but rather protected him, which is why the girl says he’s “protected.” Terrible things happen all around Eli, yet he never truly comes to any harm. He’s really the only one! I have to say I really enjoyed the other side-characters too. The crying man, the optimistic fellow with the dirt coffee, the kid everyone liked to beat on. And the horses and mules all had great names, none of which come to me right now. Great video!

    When bedridden from healthproblems,my mom got me season 1 Dead Dog Cafe,so when I was over the pyche & injury's from getting slugged over my head, having my belongings stolen & waking up under some bridge, anyway when I got better I just had to find if Thomas King had more radio or books,at Barnes and Noble I got this book in 2007,I read& re-read it,find knew stories woven into the main plot,and esoteric meanings to his dialogues.. Finally I had difficulty rereading the same over all story to gather one itty bitty nuance that I'd missed.Good choice of a review.I mostly as a rule only read nonfiction,because in MOST cases they can won't have any real info or world history told as fact.But I did love this book.If King has any others THIS good I'd love to order them.

    I got this as a free ebook as an attendant of the Vancouver Writer's Festival a few years back. I read about half-way and dropped it because I found it really boring thus did not hold my attention. As for the Canadian thing...well any book by a Canadian is a Canadian book in my eyes. If you think of CanLit as a genre as some do, it probably does not fit traditionally. If you think of CanLit as a genre itself (very literary and about/set in Canada or immigration in Canada) than that likely excludes genre (SFF, YA, thriller, etc) books by Canadian writers too and just seems silly to me? American literature is often criticized for being so insular (i.e writing about itself a lot) especially in contrast to British literature where many award-winning writers set their book outside of or not exclusively about Britain. To put parameters to what is and not "CanLit" just does a disservice to and demoralizes the writing culture here in Canada.

    Interesting video. I’m surprised to hear that you feel Mrs. Bentley is “passive” or that readers write her off. You talk about the ways imagined readers would respond to Mrs. Bentley’s struggle if the same decisions had been made by a man, saying that the reader would feel sympathy for the character and also go so far as to applaud Ross for a “realistic depiction of human error.” Don’t you feel we do this for Mrs. Bentley? I know I did. You say that, because our narrator is a woman, “we” wonder if Ross is chauvinist, and I can’t get my head around that. Nor am I persuaded that a male author’s depiction of a woman who regrets some of her decisions necessarily means that she is written as weak or passive. I would argue that Ross very ethically and sensitively gives Mrs. Bentley voice, and I would also argue that she has the most power in the novel. Literally everything and everyone is mediated through her. Not only is she the character who tries to revive her own life as well as Philip’s, but she does so through the act of writing which is inherently active. I see AFMAMH as being a feminist novel. Certainly the life that Mrs. Bentley experiences is unlike anything that most modern Canadian women would encounter, and she is subject to pressures and expectations that are unfamiliar now, but I feel that the way she navigates these issues and remains in control of her narrative means she is a character who maintains her agency throughout the novel. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and wrapping us up!

    • @foolishoats
      @foolishoats 9 лет назад

      I guess I did a poor job explaining myself! I also saw it as a feminist novel. I was speaking to a small theme I saw popping up in our Goodreads thread that some readers thought she was not a strong character, or that Ross had created a feminist text. When I did some quick research, it looks as though there's some scholarly hate on for Mrs. B as well. I've linked one article in particular in the description in case anyone wants a read through!

    • @JasonPurcell
      @JasonPurcell 9 лет назад

      foolishoats Ah, gotcha! Yeah, I think there can certainly be a reading that questions Mrs. B and implicates Ross in the process because there are moments that cause a raised eyebrow! But I guess the way I think of it is that even those moments are mediated by Mrs. Bentley. She's the one deciding how she is portrayed and which vulnerabilities/weaknesses she emphasizes. Thanks so much for linking the article! I can't wait to read it! :)

    This was wonderful. I finished the novel minutes ago and was left with so many complicated emotions. I also picked up on the subtext early on in but was slightly confused by the events at the end. This particularly theory does make Phillip a slightly more sympathetic character. But only slightly.

    I read this book immediately after a breakup so it made me think about the ways that we change ourselves, adapt and compromise in relationships -- because of love or convention -- and how these sacrifices can really make partners resent each other. Oh happy thoughts! Your ideas are super interesting, and make a lot of sense, but I'm curious how the later events you referred to fit into that theory?

    I read this book years ago for a summer correspondence course in canlit I needed to take in order to graduate on time. I feel like I would have enjoyed it more if I'd had this video to accompany me! I didn't dislike it, but rather I think I just didn't delve into it as much as it would take me to really love it. Reading moody canlit while you are trying to enjoy the gorgeous summer felt, at that time, a hindrance. (I put Settlers of the Marsh in this same category too, oh man.)
