Secular Homeschool High School | Curriculum, Advice, Planning & How To
Such a helpful video! I’m putting together a world geography unit for my girls who will be in 3rd, 6th, and 8th grades next year. I plan on pulling from a lot of different resources but I didn’t realize how robust the Waldock Way curriculum was! Thanks again for your video!
@@Gameroomschoolhouse world geography is so fun!!! Homeschool Together resource guides are PACKED with RUclips videos and books and free or donation only! You can also get free geography resources and videos from Layers of Learning Geography resource page. Around the World is my favorite can you tell?? Haha!
Where did you find your transcript form?
@@amandajean1856 Hi! this is the one I had in the video btdthomeschool.com/product/high-school-transcript-template-doc/
@ thank you!
I think we will be using Oak Meadows Hero's Journey for 9th grade. We're using OM for middle school and enjoy it, its writing heavy and my eldest hates writing so I often choose to have him do discussions with me instead of the writing assignment.
@@elisabeth... that’s a good idea to amend the curriculum to work for you! All the writing has definitely held me back OM. Glad you guys found a good fit!! 😊
I like MBTP. I don’t think we could just use that. It feels like it would become repetitive but using a couple of them a year is my plan. Have you looked at Oak Meadows language arts for high school?
@@But1stCoffee I have looked through Oak meadow many, many times! Lol I have always kept my eye on it but their curriculum uses a ton of writing every week and I don’t prefer a lot of their literature choices, so I have never gone for it 😊 I love choosing my own books I don’t know why I keep thinking an all in one curriculum would work for me! I need to pick and choose 😂 (those are my favorite words haha)
@ Those where my problems with it as well. Though the World Literature Classics looks good.
@ Starting the final stretch here with my older one and mapping it all out I’m realizing we can only read so many books before college! I don’t know how I’m going to choose!!! lol
@ Same
I believe Sarah Plain and Tall has sequel books. That may be why there isn't a good ending. I'm not 100% sure about that, but I thought I seen somewhere that there were other books that followed.
@@heathercox5801 ahh ok maybe it expands the story more 😊
Check out UK middle grade books for your daughter instead of US. They have pictures. Even as an adult and a huge reader I like maps and illustrations in my books. I'm a sucker for a beautiful book. Earlier this year I started wondering why I was making my kids read books with just text and ordered a ton of stuff from blackwells for their reading pleasure. Books that I know for sure have cool illustrations include anything by Tom Fletcher, the Frostheart series by Jamie Littler, the Land of Roar series by Jenny Mclachlan; The Hatmakers series by Tamzin Merchant has some pictures but not mas many and same kind of thing with the The Extremely Inconvenient Adventures of Bronte Mettlestone series, The Tilly and the Book Wanderes series. I hope these recommendations are helpful. I get so much benefit from hearing you talk through things. I kind of wish I had more secular homeschooling families in my area because having a plan and coffee/tea date to plan and bounce ideas off eachother would be so helpful.
@@sarahelizabeth7751 wow that is amazing that they include illustrations in their middle grade I will definitely check into that!! She loves art and beautiful things as well! Thank you for the recommendation! It’s funny our Co-Op is like 95% unschoolers and our enrichment school is mostly Christian based families so we are in the minority here as well! Maybe we need an online meeting or something that sounds lovely!
@NicoleSecularandFree I would be totally in for an online group!!! Something would be better than the nothing I've currently got going on in terms of secular homeschool mom support.
I've been thinking about getting my kids a subscription to The Week Junior and then I discovered our library has it for free via the Libby App! Writers Workshop looks great! I think I might grab a unit and see how we like it! Not school related, but I have the same Corelle plates! I inherited sets from both of my grandmother's and the Pyrex bakeware/mixing bowls that match. I love them!
@@elisabeth... what a good tip about the Libby app!!! That’s so funny you have the same plates we inherited them Grandma as well!
Inkspell, the second book in the Inkworld series, is also excellent. I liked it even better than Inkheart.
@@glassbeadgameplayer9964 oh yay!!! Thanks for the recommendation! 😍📚
Love to hear you are loving LoL! All of their stuff is AMAZING! I am shocked how few people use it! Soooo reasonably priced and so many ideas and resources!
@@inquisitivemindsacademy I’m getting curious about what else they have now! Lol ahhhh 😂
@@NicoleSecularandFree haha!! Down the rabbit hole you go! They actually have Science, History, Geography, & Art! The FREE resources they have for all of their subjects is phenomenal and it's not behind a paywall. I tell all my friends (even those who don't use any LoL to use it). They spend a ton of time curating and maintaining all the links!
@ oh wow I didn’t realize they had so much!
RIGHT!! We use LOL and I’m debating on starting a channel to show it and how I use it because its amazing and more people need to know about it ahah. I haven’t used writer’s workshop but I think I’m going to start it next school year!
@ that good! Lol if you do start a channel make sure to comment here and I’ll share your video 😊
Hi Nicole, if I remember correctly you shared a curated playlist by you about homeschooling high school . If you don’t mind can you share it again thank you
@@Wabi-sabiPlans hi! I did make one but someone let me know some of the videos weren’t Secular so I’m fixing it. I repost when I’m done! Sorry about that!
@ no problem! Take your time. I watch every video you upload. Sometimes twice/thrice because I know sooner or later you’ll take them down! You’re a wealth of knowledge and experience. Love that you’re real! No promotions/sponsors
@ lol that’s smart! Sponsorships always give me the icks, like commercials are OK, but pretending your kid uses night zookeeper (and using the kid in the video) is gross and so you can make a bunch of money off people who sign up is so scammy!
My daughter wants more art history. What curriculum are you using?
@@heatherbenza5185 we love HiGasfy (have I got a story for you) it’s a digital purchase through timberdoodle
I appreciate your updates! We are also a family that switches according to our needs
@@schultesweeties thanks! I enjoy yours as well!!!
Tell me more about this French game!
@@NJDeXdance lol! Here is the link we have not played it yet so I can’t say if it’s good or not a.co/d/h4pLeWs
Love me some Layers of Learning!!! I think it’s truly a hidden gem that needs to be talked about more! Looking forward to seeing if your kids like WW!
@@inquisitivemindsacademy it’s been on my radar a long long time! I’m excited to try out this piece 😊
@@NicoleSecularandFreeplease do a video on it. I think language arts is the hardest next to foreign language that I struggle with for my incoming 9th grader. I have grammar covered. He needs to learn to be a better writer. He’s got it up there. It’s putting it on paper lol
@ I definitely will, I understand the struggles!! I’ll put a Foreign language video out as well that could be used for any language, hopefully that will help 😊
@ thank you. I don’t see many videos from you, I swear you had more. Do you have another channel? Also I can’t find the blossom and root Astronomy course. Do you have a link?
@ my old videos are gone I don’t keep them up forever too much personal information. The Astronomy course is part of the level 5 science. You get oceans and astronomy www.blossomandroot.com/level-5
What are you using for your daughter’s typing?
@@katrinakim4145 we using typing.com it’s only $10 for a year if you want ad free and very simple to use 😊
I love this idea of picture books, even with older kids. I will definitely be reading picture books to my kids for as long as they let me! I really believe that I good picture book can span the age groups! Thank you for sharing what you are doing in your home school!
@@katrinakim4145 definitely!! My son still listens too (I even enjoy high quality ones!)
Thank you for saying that about math u see. I am struggling to feel brave enough. We are recent public school drop outs.
@@HeathersHomeschool2024 of course! That may not be the best fit. For public school drop out newbies my favorite recommendation is Math with Confidence. It’s inexpensive and high quality. And you can easily transition in and out of public school with it. As a new teacher it will hold your hand and tell you everything to say as well. MUS is great if you’re here for the long run 😊
@@NicoleSecularandFree 100% agree that Math With Confidence is a great resource. It’s so easy to use and both of my kids have loved it.
@@brittany.powellmy adhd 4th grader is doing great with Math with Confidence. We will most likely continue it as long as we can
@@cbranson4654 we intend to use it through grade six, which will be the last one Kate Snow makes. I wish there would be more from her, but from what I hear Denison is amazing so we’re going to use that.
@ I agree with Denison. My 8th grader is using it for Algebra 1 and he will continue that for all of his math.
I used to give them the whole math workbook. Until one of them got drenched due to a tipped cup. Now I split them up into 4 units.
@@lunab8822OMG new fear unlocked! Lol
We tried level Storm this year and my son liked some of it but hated the rainy day reader. We ended up dropping it for now and are going to try the old grade 7.
Ah good to know!! I saw on a review somewhere it was confusing. Like most curriculum besides math I’m sure I’ll be using it pretty loosely. I’ve never seen the inside of the old 7 / 8 I’m so curious what they were like!!
@ I should be making a video about our curriculum changes for this 1/2 of the year. Ether this weekend or next week. That will have a look inside.
@ ahh perfect I’ll definitely check that out!
Oh I wish I have had this channel years ago. I was wanting a book list that wasn't so dystopian, weird and hopeless, like the kids were required to read in public school. All the homeschool curriculum at the time was Christian based. I winged it big time and documented it all. IT WAS GREAT.
@@juliamarple3785 lol I totally understand where you are coming from!! I’ve winged it especially with books a ton over the years as well!
Thank you so much! We’re starting high school next year, too, so this is really helpful. I love your positive encouragement. Yes, we can do this! I just watched a video from Homeschool Breakroom, and they are doing AP Computer Science for 9th grade too. I really appreciate learning about so many different resources from other homeschool parents.
I’ll have to check out Homeschool Breakroom thanks for the recommendation! Glad I can be encouraging so excited for next year!!!
