Here we are just waiting to be consumed by this destructive EF-3 wedge tornado near #Hedrick during the worst tornado outbreak on record for Eastern Iowa At first I thought it might slide just west of the farm but sadly it overtook it. Heading straight for us at 65 MPH. Sadly it overtook the farm but fortunately the owner had safely evacuated prior. This EF-3 would merge with an EF-4 that would impact Keota, Iowa. On this day, Eastern Iowa saw more tornadoes in a 24 hour period than it had in recorded meteorological history and was part of a regional outbreak that produced the third most tornadoes in a 24 hour period in our nation's history. This was the first tornado we encountered on the deadly day of 5/21/24, a rain wrapped EF-3 tornado crossing 71 north of Villisca, #Iowa. The "bear cage" is clearly visible and we confirmed the tornado was on the ground at this point. Just about 3 miles or so to the southeast we saw a new lowering forming. On 3/31/23, the worst tornado outbreak in Eastern Iowa history occurred. It was part of a larger regional outbreak that produced 186 tornadoes in a 24 hour period, the third most in US History. Here we see a merger of an EF-3 and EF-4 near Keota #Iowa. We continue north of I-80 to chase this destructive long tack multi-vortex wedge. It was on the ground for over an hour, traveling 40 miles. After we got ahead of that beast, we were able to get this shot. The inflow was rocking me hard and I struggled to keep the iPhone still. Still it's impressive footage despite its flaws. The structure on this tornado was amazing! Keep your eyes on the circling skies my friends. Windcatcher out.
