I saw this at a small movie theater in 1983. It was powerful then and more so now!

Monumental film that preserves HISTORY!!!! The History of Gospel Music. I regret that more musicians from that time are not included. The FATHER of Gospel, Dr. Thomas A. Dorsey IS there, thankfully along with Willie Mae Ford Smith and her students: The Barrett Sisters, O'neal Twins to name a few. Sallie Martin is there ..however another big influence Roberta Martin is not mentioned. One other important factor is that Pilgrim Baptist Church is featured in the film. Sadly that important building has since been destroyed by fire. One of the key moments for me was when Dr. Dorsey told the story of how his song, "Precious Lord" came to him...the circumstances! Priceless Film!

I was a white boy from around Dayton, Ohio, raised on black gospel, and my mom would rent this from the local library...regularly. This film played and still plays an important part of my life.

So good to see you guys dig into this truly classic film! One of Denzel's all time best as well as the movie that put Don Cheadle on the map. A great mystery noir thriller. Carl Franklin is criminally overlooked as a director\writer.

It was really moving and entertaining, and the acting was stellar, especially the character Paulina. Profound subject matter, yes, but made me laugh lots, too. Great work, all!
