Installing a tiered retaining wall in a sloped yard
This is the most complicated project I've ever tackled because of the math involved to figure out all the tiers as the yard sloped upwards. Otherwise, though, it is a pretty simple build. Just posts, slats, and some toppers. And it looks so great!

Outdoor Dining Upgrade - Building Privacy Panels
Просмотров 5513 года назад
A very generous customer of Sake 107 in Petaluma, CA hired my step sister, owner of local flower shop, Flower Casita, to upgrade their outdoor dining experience. I helped with the build of four privacy panels that plant boxes can sit on top of. The design was fairly simple. I made four plywood boxes joined together with pocket screws, and then used carriage bolts to attach the slatted privacy p...

This was my first time making Yorkshire pudding. It was easier than expected! Shot with Canon EOS R and iPhone 10r, and edited with Final Cut Pro. INGREDIENTS 3 eggs 115g plain flour 1 pinch sea salt 285 ml milk 12 tablespoons vegetable oil INSTRUCTIONS Whisk the eggs, flour, salt, and milk together really well in a bowl to make your batter. Offspring - Come Out and Play in Keeney Quad
We live in Southern Nevada and had it installed a week ago. The other day it was 110 degrees. I screwed up and walked to the middle of the lawn before I really felt the heat, so I ran off the law into the house to stand on the tile floor, LOL. We used green sand, treated silica sand, infill to help with bacteria. We shopped for the grass and sand and paid the guy that delivered the turf that said he installs it on his weekend. Total cost was 4.50 a sq foot. We love it. We had 500 sq feet installed. After 3 years it would not hurt to add more infill to your grass and use a hard bristle push broom to work it in.
Anyone else’s turf get a little mushy under with a lot of rain ? What can alleviate this ? Should I add more nails into the turf to hold it in place better ? Some parts in the middle feel a little loose. I leveled the ground, added a plastic weed barrier, added gravel and comoacted it then lastly installed the turf. Any tips for me are welcome
Your video makes my life a lot easier!!!! Thank you!!!!
I would recommend that you get at least one furniture dolly at your local national chain store that sells them cheap. And a tarp would have helped in a pinch.
How do I calculate how much base gravel I need if I know my square footage and inches I want in depth.
2 tons for 450 square feet got us about two inches.
Do you get a smell of urine on hot days from the dog urinating on the grass?
Never. It is a permeable surface, so drainage is good. But also, we're in San Francisco so not many hot days...
I'm going to be installing my turf myself. What I learned was the non-woven geotextile fabric (the weed barrier) needs to be installed on top of the compacted rock right below the turf. It seem counter-intuitive, but this comes directly from the synthetic turf wholesaler. Nice video and now I'm going to watch your installation video!

For visible seam issue: I think u did not stretch ur turf . I noticed this in the first video
Good but I was looking for how to install
Check the installation video that this relates to!
Thank you so much for this vid it was sooo helpful and made me feel a lot more confident. Other vids scared me but I love how no matter the problems you came up on you just kept going and it looks amazing thank you so much
Dang! How did U adhere it to the ground. Y is it necessary to put down ? before lying the turf?
Check the separate installation video! We nailed down along the entire perimeter.
What it the infill? How do U clean the leaves and etc?
Infill is basically playground sand. We have to rake the leaves. I kind of want a leaf blower!
This is just so sad. There was a pond and real grass there before this platic monstrosity was put down. All the nature that was there before just wiped out
It was a dirt pit since since the day we moved in (though there were a lot of clovers!)
Give us another update in a years time once the dog has depositied 4 times a days. Bet the smell will be kicking up
When you be popular dont forget me🙊
But who are you? 😂
Thousand year eggs?
It’s called that but really it’s just a preserved egg in a bunch of stuff like lime. One of the strangest foods.
This looks amazing, thank you for sharing!
You are so welcome!
This is a w way to use a turkey carcus
You go ahead and enjoy your juk.
No
Great video! What was the cost of just the turf? 15ft x ?ft = $?
$4.49/sf plus tax.
So helpful and interesting. Thank you.
It’s very heavy!! Omg lol I agree
Great video update! I'm also in San Francisco. Where did you find the decomposed granite that shipped to you? I need 1ton and my car can't carry that much lol
Rent a truck or find a company that delivers
Broadmoor. They delivered on a pallet!
Thank you! I just watched your first video and it was great but I did wonder how it would hold up. Awesome!
What about wire For Gophers
You guys did a great job. I’m planning on doing turf in my new dog run we’re building. Thanks for the helpful info!
Great video, much better then some of the pro videos.
Wow, thanks!
thanks a lot, I appreciate this. a LOT of DIY'er do projects and i'm always wondering how did that turn out to look, 3 or 5 years later !! Gives me hope I can do this correctly :)
Glad I could help!
Nice job, but too much bass on the music.
Sick. Great job! More videos, please.
More to come!
I don't own any Lululemon... but helpful video, thanks!
Great video - very easy to understand the process. I have a question about your seams. Did you have to make any seams that were cut perpendicular to the direction of the rows of grass?
Yes, for the edges. The turf is woven in regular rows at regular intervals, so it’s simple to cut straight in either direction.
It looks nice!
Thank you!
Hi, could you give details on the surf you chose? You mention the coloring but I am wondering about the name and height. Thx
We got it from our local landscape supply store. The turf is called supernatural-80. You can google that and the specs come up.
I literally just watched your first turf video and now you've done an update video 🤩 I did my own artificial grass install too and I love it!! People think it's real grass. your back yard looks amazing still 🎉
Thanks for following the journey 😉 congrats on doing your own install too!
Wondering what is the size of turf each piece you install? Mine is 15x20, but i found it too heavy to drag, any tips?
I think mine was roughly 15x40 that I cut into two so that I was dealing with two 15x20 pieces or so. I agree, it was heavy. We bought ties to tie the roll up really tight, and then dragged it with two people. But it was almost undoable and I almost thought we wouldn't be able to do it. I think I would have gotten more people to help if I could do it again.
Use furniture dollies to help carry the weight over smooth surfaces and put plywood over not so smooth surfaces
Good to see it holding up well. We have a dog and I heavily researched before installing the grass. General consensus seems to buy a PU backed grass (not latex backed) and also to not use sand infill. Both of these absorb & hold onto the pet urine odours, I hope you don’t get this problem with your new pooch! 🤞🤞
Good to know! We never even considered having a dog before we installed the turf, so never took it into account. The odors haven't been noticeable at all, but do try to take our dog out as much as I can on the street, because hosing the turf to clean it does end up adding another chore to life.
@@ChristopherYeehi ! Where did you purchase the bender board? And what’s the name and brand? Has there been any warping ?
@@MrMatute7 hi there. I can't remember where we purchased it, unfortunately. I think if you search for heavy duty bender board landscaping edging you'll be fine. It came in a very very loose roll No warping--it is basically all plastic so I wouldn't expect much warping.
@@ChristopherYee thanks. I think they sell it at Lowe’s. Under Bender Board. Looks exactly like the one you have
@@MrMatute7 you know, that’s the closest big hardware store to me, so I think that’s exactly where I got it.
This is good
Thank you!
Thx for the video, i had seen the install video a couple days ago and didnt realize it was 3 years ago... very nice to see this update. Me and my wife are considering doing a DIY turf install bc of your video... thanks a lot brother!.... your yard looks amazing ..
Thanks a bunch! I even surprised myself that it was 3 years ago. We did it in April 2020 and the Covid pandemic kind of just made the interim years vanish from memory. Haha! Good luck if you take it on! It's such a great DIY project because it very little skill (though the work itself is laborious).
Did you end up with any drainage issues with the crazy rain this year?
None. We did have water intrusion in our basement for the first time ever but I think that was more due to the fact that the ground was over saturated and nothing to do with the turf.
I installed this exact same turf and I feel you on the seam line. I see it every single time I go out back, but I’ve been told others don’t notice it as much or they don’t care. Overall the benefits outweigh my personal ocd on this. We’ve had it installed for a few weeks now and our kids and the pup just love it! Thanks for the vid
Yea, you forget about it when you’re using it and having fun. :) enjoy!
That looks like so much fun 😹
Haha. It was! But not something I’d do JUST for fun ;)
Decomposed granite is not the greatest option as it doesn't allow much moisture through. Crushed roadbase 1/8 or 1/4 is recommended. Great work regardless!
great video. How did you calculate how much you needed of decomposed granite and infill? some online calculators recommend 1 tonne of decomposed granite per100sqf of turf
We just went with online suggestions too. We had two tons of granite for 450sf which ended up being pretty perfect in our case. I think it would have been perfectly ok to use more but I wouldn’t have used less. The granite is cheap and it’s useful to use as a leveling material. The infill we went with 1lb per sf. again just according to the things I read online. It seemed like the correct amount.
Checking to see how the turf has help up 2 years later and if you would have done anything different? I’m contemplating installing turf in a few months
I’ve been asked this question a bunch so I’m planning an update video for upload hopefully soon. But in short, this stuff looks the same as the day we first installed. I also wish I had done a different border design, but as far as installation goes I’m totally happy with it. It seems like it’s going to last a very long time.
Update video posted!
Yikes
Material?
Great video gents. About to take on this project at my home here in NC.
Good luck!
