    If you use radiant heat to save your plants from the cold this way, it's about heat radiation, not about convection. Remove all obstacles between the heat source and each plant, or place the plants around the heater in a circle if possible. To make sure that little radiation escapes for cheap, using tin foil as a mirror can help. Fix it to the greenhouse walls on ground level. or around the circle of plants. Helps with plant survival and cost effectiveness (less tealighters needed. We saved a small olive tree from -13 degrees Celsius by wrapping it in a sack (for potatoes I guess) twice and placing the pot in a corner free of wind chills next to the house. This might not an option for smaller, more fragile plants though.

    • @Gardenguru604
      @Gardenguru604 12 дней назад

      @@FrogFWK thank you for your comment frog, it did produce a fair amount of radiant heat. I think if I insulated my glasshouse and retained more of the produced heat it would certainly be more effective. I would only use this type of heater in the glasshouse and not in my home. Thinking of using bubble wrap in the glasshouse to insulate this winter. 😊🌱

    • @FrogFWK
      @FrogFWK 12 дней назад

      @@Gardenguru604 That's an option. Another cheap one is to place the pots onto the styro foam from package material. Actual styro plates are better for a group of pots, both options are not "green" and have to be stored somewhere after wintertime or disposed.

    • @Gardenguru604
      @Gardenguru604 12 дней назад

      @@FrogFWK great suggestion, I try to recycle and reuse as much as possible. I use the air filled bags that are sometimes used as packing, they help to insulate quite well too. Bulky to store though in the months not needed.

    • @FrogFWK
      @FrogFWK 12 дней назад

      @@Gardenguru604 It's always a problem. No matter how much you've got, there's always too little space :) I remember ppl in our local gardens using actual old windows incl. frames, building rows of tents consisting of 2 "triangled" windows above their fruit & vegetables to get some sort of greenhouse effect and protection. Pretty heavy lifting every time, but they worked for the purpose.

    • @Gardenguru604
      @Gardenguru604 10 дней назад

      @@FrogFWK yes there are some amazing innovative folk about when it comes to growing plants. Plenty of inspiration for prospective growers. I’m hoping to get a larger greenhouse in the future. Black water barrels are a good way to absorb the heat through the day and keep the temperature higher over night from the warmth of the sun. I’ve been given an old paraffin heater too, so that’s my next project… get it in working order before the winter arrives 😃👍
