    I need to check back in, as this DID seem to work. Had my doubts at first, but no gnats for a couple months now!!! Not sure if it was entirely the Neem cake, but definitely a key factor. If interested, here’s what I did: 1. I scooped out the first 1-2 inches of topsoil, which I replaced with the soil mentioned in #4 below. 2. I put the pellets through a coffee mill and made a powder out of it before making the tea. I just added that powdered sediment with the pour. 3. This stuff will create a blanket of mold overnight almost. Just scraped it off by hand until it stopped coming back 4 Miracle Grow has a special potting soil that’s engineered to discourage gnats from nesting. Two treatments seemed to have done the trick, so thanks so much Luke!!!

    I have had this plant for over 15 years, it is HUGE, it measures about 40 inches across, the leaf portions are 20 inches long. It has never been repotted and now I'm afraid to mess with it after hearing that it is a finicky plant. Should I attempt it if the plant seems to be fine?

      Hi 👋 Cutting an aerial root won't necessarily affect growth. To stimulate growth, I would suggest increasing its exposure to light. Good luck!

      In my greenhouse, I use moss poles because the humidity is high, which means the moss doesn’t dry out as quickly. Around the house, I use either wooden supports or empty 3D printed moss poles

    I bought a plumeria plant at Walgreens (drugstore) 25 years ago. It was 12 inches tall. It is now 6 feet tall and a proper tree that loves life in my living room by the sliders to the deck. It is too big to be brought in and out during the seasons(I have support ties to the curtain rods) but it has bloomed several times and the flowers are amazing. You never know what plant you will find in a drugstore or grocery store.

    Great video, good tip. If I was using regular soil, like in the past when I had this problem, I would do exactly what you recommended, thank you. I switched to Pon a while ago for all my house plants and the problem has not resurfaced in the last two years. However, some plants prefer soil where this can happen and it would be a great way of tackling the problem. Looking forward to the next video

    Please I don’t know if I’ve overwatered. About 4leaves have some yellow-brownish color. What can I do

    • @LukeStocking
      @LukeStocking 6 месяцев назад

      Sounds like that could be due to overwatering, here’s what you can do: Poke a few holes into the soil with a stick (chopsticks work well) to let it air out a little more, just be careful not to damage the roots. You can also take the plant out of its container to help it air out. To prevent it from happening again only water when the top inch of soil is dry. Also, make sure you’re using quality soil and your pot has drainage holes. Good luck!

    HI Luke This is such a helpful video. I have had my Calathea/Rattle snake plant for about 5 years and in the autumn it took a turn for the worse. I have never really worked out how to look after it properly and the fact it made it to 5 years old and thrived till now was a miracle. I think it was very root bound and then got badly infested by fungus gnats when I last potted it up. The multi purpose compost I used was probably a bit old. I am going to try again using your potting mix suggestions and move it to a slightly less draughty place and fingers crossed it will bounce back in the spring. It does already look happier since I treated the fungus gnats and gave it a prune.

      @LukeStocking 7 месяцев назад

      Thanks Dawn, I appreciate that! It sounds like you’ve had quite the journey with your Rattlesnake plant, fair play on getting to the 5 year mark! I bought one from sainsbury's and it was in a jar of water labelled as a hydro plant, should i keep it this way or put it in soil???

    • @LukeStocking
      @LukeStocking 7 месяцев назад

      👋 You can continue growing it in water, just make sure you change the water once a week and use a water-soluble fertiliser. This method minimises overwatering risks and pests but requires nutrients since the plant won't get them from soil. Alternatively, you could transfer and acclimatise it to soil. Hope this helps!
