    i studied a bsc between 2018-2020 majoring in physical geography and after 3 years working in town planning/land surveying (as a technican) I am considering maybe going back to school to do a Msc in Geology or some other geoscience. A job that has me exploring new places and being physical is important for me :) so maybe an exploration geologist could be the way to go.. Im 24! 😂😊 working in the urban planning/consultancy industry was very draining haha

    I’m 14 and a freshman in high school. I’m really interested in Marine biology and Oceanography and just studying the ocean, does oceanography have a good outlook for the future? I just don’t want to go through all of college and then not be able to find a job that has a slightly above average pay, thats all!😁

    • @EarthScienceResources

      It's great that you are thinking about job availability! Many oceanographers and marine biologists work in academic settings (places like universities like professors or research institutes which often are connected to universities as well). National and state parks hire marine biologists and oceanographers as well but I'd guess those openings are rather slim. Most oceanographers I have met personally (they majored in that in college and graduate school) actually worked in the oil industry as petroleum scientists. And I know one oceanographer that went into higher education and is now a Dean.

      Are you curious about geology as a whole or do you want to focus specifically on petroleum geology? There are a lot of options for students that want to major in geology. If you focus on petroleum you will certainly narrow down your options BUT many petroleum geologist eventually branch out into different areas of geology as well. I think it is well worth the work to explore as many of the various subdisciplines in geology (there are a lot!). I've tried to highlight some through career spotlights. If someone already knows he wants to be a petroleum geologist but also aiming graduate studies,would you advise to jump right into a bs petroleum geology or do bs in geology and then go for specialization.

    • @EarthScienceResources
      @EarthScienceResources Год назад

      Undergraduate programs in petroleum geology are not very common. It is typically an area of focus for graduate level studies. From my personal experience, I would caution against putting all your geology eggs in the petroleum basket. While you should certainly pursue the path that you are most passionate about, be sure to explore and learn about other fields and opportunities within the geoscience space. The reason for my caution is simply the volatility of the oil industry. Lay-offs are just an inevitable part of the industry. And sometimes, particularly after wide spread layoffs, competition sky-rockets because there are many more geologists on the market. On another note, there are trends within larger oil & gas companies to train geologists "themselves", essentially hiring geology BS graduates rather than the standard practice of hiring geologists with a MS. Part of the reason for this is the fact that so much learning happens in the first couple of years in the industry that is just not captured or really emphasized in undergraduate or graduate studies. Whether or not you find a petroleum specific undergraduate program and subsequent graduate program, your chance of landing a position increases significantly if you attend a university where oil and gas companies recruit.
