Rivian Quirks, updates and improvements over 4k miles…
Thanks for the video! Quick turn around time! 😆
What is the actual miles per Kw? I charge my Tesla X to 80%, drive until less than 30%. I charge back to 80% and miles divided by Kw added are 2.6 miles per Kw. The trip counter always shows about 10% better but True miles are topping back up an dividing
I get anywhere from 1.5-2.5 mi/kwh when I actually calculate. Depends on time of year and what I’m doing. So if I’m preconditioning the cab all the time during the summer, and then sitting in line waiting to pick up my kids 3 hrs a day without moving, it’s terrible and I’ll be right at 1.5-1.7. When it’s nice temps outside and I’m not “idling” forever, I’ll pop back up to 2.5 or so, the best I’ve actually ever calculated was 2.6 and I nearly fell over I was so surprised! 😂
How have you found certain aspects of the Dual Motor Standard? Does the less range concern you? I believe the DC charging of the standard LFP pack is actually better then the large and max packs, how have you found it? The other models you can equip the tinting glass roof, do you find the glass roof makes the car too hot? And lastly have you done any off roading beyond just gravel roads? How was it?
I’ve done what I’d call some light off roading, it’s been surprisingly good so far. Over in the Ocotillo Wells SCRA and messing around at fiesta Island in the deepest sand I could find. Less range doesn’t bother me at all, it’ll drive further on a single charge than my family can sit still in the car for. So by the time my family is ready for a break I just have a planned charging stop. I think the most important thing we’ve found is to make sure when we stop, that we can charge overnight wherever we are. Otherwise it can definitely drive further in a day than my family wants to on a single charge. I do think it charges well. Longest I’ve had to dc fast charge for was about 35 minutes. It definitely seems to charge well but the only EV without an LFP battery I have is our Leaf, which doesn’t really count. The roof does make it hot, but not as much as I was expecting. I don’t think the auto tinting would change that much. It’s not so much the sun shining through that’s an issue, it’s the fact that glass has basically zero insulation and qualities. So while the AC is running it’s plenty cool, but once it’s sat outside for a while it’s warmed up more than a car without a pano roof would. I’ve driven through the deserts in peak temps and it had no problem staying cool. Might make a quick video answering these questions too- thanks for asking!
@True_Dad thanks for that. Yeah I guess the vibe is how big do you perceive the trade offs to be going with the lowest model. And those are the main categories I can think of.
Did I click on a car review or a documentary about baldness?
Baldness is life. Watch the updated review- it’s got less of me in it🤓
it's not an hydraulic suspension DA.... it's a pneumatic suspension. These are hydraulic swaybars, derived from the McLaren... You don't even know your own vehicle?!?
Uhhhhh mechanic here. It’s more than hydraulic “sway bars”. The hydraulics are actually a part of the suspensions up and down movement and control at each corner. It’s not just limited to what a sway bar does, but yes it replaces them, thanks to the way it controls the vehicles movement. So yes, the suspension is both air and hydraulic. They aren’t sway bars. There is no need for sway bars as a result of how the hydraulics work. As someone that actually owns the vehicle and has had it up in Jack stands to do tire rotations and thoroughly inspected it all, and as an actual mechanic, I’ll trust my own opinion over an internet troll who thinks that a Rivian has sway bars…. DA🤣
@True_Dad lol, got an R1S myself and do all the suspension work on my model S (God knows there's quite a lot), and even though that's not my trade, I know that Rivian went and got an engineer from McLaren, making the connection and explaining the similarities with the 765lt and did use the term hydraulic swaybars for vulgarisation purposes. I'd expect a real mechanic to use the right terminology the first thing in his videos... good luck to your customers! DF 😂 (love this letter thing, anyone can interpret whatever they want! 🤣)
Being super straight together 😂🤣🤣
You had me at "it didn't explode in flames and burn my house down" Lol. Subscribed.
Scratching the car with the keys as you unlock them tho…😮😮
I legit worried about that😂 All the things I do for these videos🫠
It would be nice to 'see' what you're talking about, instead looking at you the whole time.
I’m definitely trying to do that more rather than keeping my ugly mug on screen so much too!😂
the reservations are at 80% for harvester right now, so you're in a minority. Also if I had to guess you live in an area with good infrastructure. Some parts of the country the charging infrastructure is horrible and using an EV on a long trip easily adds hours to your trip. Sure most days you only drive 30 miles but I feel like this is one of those narratives that doesn't truly capture the entire picture of most people's use cases that do include road trips and towing. Even if rare, EV's are still not ideal for road tripping and towing. This won't change until charging is about as fast as filling a tank of gas and energy density of batteries improves.
Sure, I definitely am going to be in the minority, but time will tell how effective the approach is. People definitely think they want it right now, but I think it’s just good marketing. You’re still going to have to stop and charge on a road trip. And the. Also get gas. While EVs in 2027 will capable of going further without needing any gas or extra maintenance. Like I said in the video- I may be wrong but we will see. We will all learn together on that one.
@@True_Dad There's no guarantee that you will need to charge AND get gas on a road trip. In fact I doubt that will be the case, but that's why real details on the range extender are necessary.
@ Time will tell… I still believe what I said in the video. You can do coast to coast road trips even all the way to Alaska currently with just a regular EV. There is no actual need for a range extender other than to help people feel more confident. I dont believe it’s actually going to extend range beyond what EVs will do already in 2027. I just don’t believe it’s going to be effective in real life other than to get people to make the initial jump from ICE to EVs. Each to their own and I know your situation and feelings about it, but I personally am not buying the marketing lines and don’t believe it’s going to bring any actual effective range to people. It’s going to bring ICE maintenance to an EV and reduce efficiency, while providing no actual additional range. It will allow some extra flexibility if you want to park and let it run for an hour to add range via gas… but I could bring a generator and do the same thing. Driving range without charging is not something that will actually be longer than comparable EVs at launch, but that’s just my opinion, so we will see. I still think it’s a great vehicle and it obviously appeals to many, I’m just not convinced that in reality it will meet expectations. It’s clearly a reworked/reduced cost R1, so I know it’ll be great. I’m not hating on anyone that likes them or is buying the range extender. I just don’t think it’ll work out like the marketing makes out.
@@True_Dad interesting. In what way do you feel the Scout resembles a reworked R1?
Oh it’s very clear that’s what it is. Look closely at the side mirrors and how they’re mounted. The entire dash shape and layout, the screens are identical, the operating software was literally the same even. The location and shape of the pillars and windows besides the last rear one on the Traveler. The entire silhouette. Even the Rims on the traveler are the same, just with one extra spoke. The shape of the entire frunk, it’s just split so the grill comes up with the hood instead of being left down…. I could go on. It’s undoubtedly an R1S. The Terra is even more easily distinguishable as an R1T. Anyone can listen to the call in which RJ formally admitted it’s a software and hardware venture, not just software like they initially hinted. I might make a video showing the comparisons even, it’s amazing how similar they are!
Why not just put in a small diesel and call it a day....go 800 miles on a tank of diesel. I guess that just makes too much sense!
I hear ya, I honestly think that does make more sense than adding a motor to an EV. It’s potentially the worst of both worlds. Personally I love my pure EV and I think that the Scout will sell well, but without actually being a better product than either a gas/diesel or electric vehicle.
government regulation and their definition of range extender. The extender cannot exceed the range of the EV side alone. this is the reason why the i3 in Europe performs much better than the US version.
@@damion0068 That’s true. I wonder why they don’t just call it a hybrid or something instead then, rather than making it worse in order to use a specific title?
This one part that I didn’t think about with their range extender as to where it really would fit and the extras with it. As for small motors Volkswagen Group also owns Ducati so there’s a small motor design too. I like the range extender for the purpose of Camping. You drive out to a place in the mountains and there aren’t many charging spots but plenty of gas stations. Not sure what the solar array would be required from Anker or the like to charge it on a mountain. Again thanks for the food for thought and I guess we will see in 3-4 years.
You're 100% wrong about the BMW i3... I have one... when you run out of EV juice, the REV kicks in and you're able to drive normally even at highway speeds until you refuel or recharge. There is no difference running on batteries or with the range extender motor. There is no "limp" mode as you stated. The i3 uses a 660cc motorcycle engine for charging... Scout has not announced what engine they'll use for the range extender. Seems to me that a 1.2 - 1.8L would probably provide plenty of juice. You seem to be making a lot of assumptions with limited information.
TFL has done their own video showing how the i3 works. Anyone can view it themselves, it is certainly not full power or able to drive normally. A 1.2-1.8l would probably be enough power to extend the range, but never at anything like the original power, so towing etc would be drastically reduced. Otherwise wouldn’t they just use the 1.2-1.8l to begin with and skip the EV portion? It’s not possible for it to make enough power as efficiently or reliably. On top of that, the larger the motor the more weight and other compromises it makes such as needing larger cooling systems, more fuel so less efficiency… like I said in the video the fun part is now we get to wait and see🤷♂️ I could very well be wrong.
Please link to where VW said the harvester will not come on until you've exhausted 150 miles of electric range
I apologize, I couldn’t actually find it again when I checked for a link. Unfortunately we will have to call that speculation. Thanks for asking though, I do like to be able to back up what I’ve said, so I’m a little disappointed in myself for that on this one. If I do find it I’ll post it here.
@@True_Dad I have only seen 150 miles of all EV range confirmed. Seems to me like a lot of people are taking that and putting words in the mouth of the Scout employee that said it. It's been like a game of telephone on the Scout boards. I would be very surprised if this is the case. Any plug in hybrid today has the ability to run the ICE on demand to preserve the battery as long as possible. Wrangler 4XE calls this E-Save and I'd be shocked if the Harvester doesn't have something similar. I don't think this will be anything like the i3rex. I'm sure there are A LOT of design decisions yet to be made. Regardless, I think using an EV in the way you describe is a complete non starter for the vast majority of the population. The increase in charging infrastructure needed to change that is MASSIVE and many years away. Which is why the take rate on the harvester is so high. A huge swath of the market has no interest in charging anywhere but home, and for good reason.
I appreciate the thoughtful engagement- thanks for being logical and putting forward a real discussion, it’s not common these days! I agree that this is a bit of a game of telephone right now, it’d be great to see some more clarifications from Scout directly. At this point though it’s not encouraging that it’s been so vague. As someone living with 3 pure EVs, I do think that with equal range, a pure EV is just fine ownership wise. Where is there no electricity? Every gas station has it, so anywhere there is gas, you can also charge an EV in theory. Charging away from home needs to improve, but it’d make more sense to rent something for a rate trip that an EV genuinely couldn’t do, rather than buy an entire vehicle that’s going to be less efficient, more expensive and less reliable the rest of the time. We will see how it rolls out I suppose and I’m absolutely open to the fact I may be wrong. I keep thinking “be careful what you wish for” concerning the market on this one. People are scared that haven’t lived with an EV. This is a bad half measure to sell to those customers in my opinion. This is definitely people getting what they wished for, so we will see if it’s actually what they wanted or not in a few years.
@@True_Dad I have a fair bit of experience with EVs. Several close family members have them(PHEV and BEV alike) and LOVE them. For good reason. I have a 50amp outlet installed in my garage because I fully anticipate having some sort of electrified vehicle soon. For a while I had a deposit down on an EV6 but had to go another direction. Our first one will likely be a PHEV, if not a Scout Harvester. I think it's incorrect to label resistance as fear. It's simply a matter of personal use case, of which there are MANY, which is why we need many types of EVs to meet demand. Personally I'd like something small like a Bolt or EV6 as my daily, and then a large family vehicle that's ICE or PHEV. Would work great for my family. I'd almost never charge away from home and I have a couple of cities within 3 hours where I'd have no problem taking a BEV and charging it maybe once on an occasional road trip without the family in tow. Currently our family SUV is an LX570 and it has to serve a lot of roles. One of which is 3-4 trips a year from North Texas to New Mexico and/or Colorado, with two small kids along. We do a fair bit off roading/camping/skiing/Alpine Looping. That's all 12-15 hours away. It would be great to replace it with some electrification, because it rarely goes more than 15-20 miles in a day at home. Even on the weekends. If something like the Scout is going to fill THAT role, a BEV is completely out of the question. A BEV with 500 miles of range is just as useless as one with 200 miles. It has to be a PHEV or a suitable range extender. Harvester take rate is over 80% at this point so I think you'll find my use case is pretty common. One thing you point out that I think is great, is that the discussion of range itself is kind of loaded. My LX only goes 200-225 miles on a tank. Most EVs will double that soon. But it's not a question of RANGE. I can set off on any road with an ICE, almost anywhere in America, and know that with a little planning I can add 200 miles of range in less than 5 minutes. THAT'S what needs to be replicated for EVs. We are just nowhere near close to that with EVs and won't be for a long time. I'll have gone through a few more cars before that happens. There's room in the market for many types of powertrains and at the moment a series hybrid is going to fit me best. PHEVs and series hybrids are only going help us adopt EVs and take more miles of ICE usage off the road FASTER, not slower.
That’s a fair and well presented statement!
I've been saying things like this as well since I saw the range extender option. Part of why I'm going EV is to get completely away from combustion and all the issues and maintenance that comes with it. Put development into the batteries and commit to the EV transition.
LMAO.. Not what I was expecting but what I needed.. Thanks for the laugh..
The harvester is just a generator. plenty of portable generators that are air cooled. I'd like to see the harvester be removable and usable as a standalone generator and free up trunk space when not needed!
At that point thought could t it literally just be a hitch mounted generator? An air cooled generator that adds any significant range to an EV while meeting emissions? I’m not buying it, but it could be cool if they manage!
LOL ! that was funny
Hi, can we send you some products to review too? If so how can we contact you

Any way to have the Halloween update work while the car is driving? Like for KITT?
Nope, it was limited to use when in “park.” Safety/legal thing I think.
If you ain’t an electrician, you shouldn’t install your own charger. I know it’s expensive, but the house wiring has to be prepped, to avoid an overload fire.
Yep I’d agree with that.
Great vid! I ordered a black one with the same options. Looking forward to driving it

I took delivery 4/24 and still haven’t gotten. My NACS adapter. When did you take delivery and when did you get your adapter?
We took delivery end of June, but this is the one we got from Ford with my wife’s Mach E that we bought in January. Only just got it within the last month.
Is there any way to tell when it’s blending the brake pads in during “regen” braking? I’m curious how long it can sustain downhill regen before starting to incorporate the brake pads.
Good question and I have no official source to answer. From my understanding during research and from what I can tell driving my own, it doesn’t use hydraulic braking at all, except for emergencies. Rivian is unique in that way, it does not use hydraulic brakes for its one pedal mode either. So it’s all regen and it can maintain it indefinitely provided the vehicle is able to keep up cooling wise.
You should see you the panel issues and gasket trims of an Tesla X, all years. If this was an actual quality car, it would not pass QA/QC unless tolerances are double both ways
I promise it’s a quality car. I’ve never bought any brand of new car that had no issues similar to this trim piece. I did hear so many stories about Teslas though that I didn’t buy one. I would have for a smaller vehicle, or at least considered it, but they have nothing that compares. No one does, currently.
@@True_Dad I have a 2024 Model X that is 2 month old. The quality is SHIET. Rattles, Creaks, and the loose bolts holding key items on to the car. Never again.

Hello! Love your informative videos. If you could show and talk about your solar and battery setup you currently have, it will help me understand. What kind of true range do you get? I’m test driving this week and am very interested in leasing one but I do drive about 115 miles one way pretty frequently but can charge in between the return trip.
Depends on drive, but the worst I ever got was around 175 or so in some extreme heat in freeway driving. Typically I’d say I get very close to full range because I do mostly round town driving and it loves that consumption wise. If I had to put a number on a consistent guaranteed range that I can be sure of, it’d be 230. Obviously you can get the bigger battery pack, but I personally think LFP is the way to go.
What is the expected range? My Tesla said 348 miles but actually it's 260 to 275 miles. 3 miles per Kw on a 100kw battery which now holds only 96kw after 2 years and 30k miles
@ Good question and the answers will vary widely depending on what kind of driving you’re doing. I went on a trip yesterday up over the mountains to the desert, drove around and came back, about 5-6 hrs driving and averaged 2.3 miles/kwh (actually calculated, not just the computer read out). This is a standard pack so that would work out to 211 miles if I actually used 100%. I personally get 200-230 miles on most trips I do, which is great as far as I’m concerned. It’s supposed to be 259 miles according to EPA, but I’ve never gotten anything like what the EPA thinks I should with any car. The standard pack is the LFP so I charge it to 100% as recommended. If you want comparable range to what your teslas getting, definitely go for a bigger pack. I don’t do long drives all that often, so I’m fine with the smaller pack and would rather have LFP chemistry.
I’m a current Tesla owner and I’m looking into getting an R1S with almost the same specs as yours. Coming from a Tesla, you kind of get used to the lack of Apple CarPlay and the absence of a texting feature. For ambitious car companies like Tesla and Rivian, which aim to create their own ecosystems, the last thing they’ll do is open up their closed operating systems. With that said, they’re unlikely to ever adopt Apple CarPlay
I’d agree with that, it’s not necessarily that I want CarPlay- but give me something. Some kind of texting capability- anything! Make sure if you do buy a Rivian, to use someone’s referral code! Mines ADAM1421923- just in case you can’t find someone else’s 😜
Do you find the range estimates accurate?
Generally yes. For most of my driving I find them to be conservative, that said during extreme heat, going through mountains I had one trip that the estimate was drastically shorter, requiring an unplanned charging stop.
Thanks for sharing this experience. Complex computer systems are an integral component in most modern cars. I had a glitch in my Volvo last year that had us without A/C for a day, a serious issue in Florida heat. Sounds like Rivian did right by you. Kudos to them.
It’s true, computers are in everything and sometimes they glitch, that’s expected. The customer service was a nice surprise in a downer of a situation for sure, they really did do right! Thanks for watching!
Gotta say, an issue disabling A/C is frankly unacceptable unless something is completely broken. Software is not a justifiable cause.
Thanks for your even-handed reporting. I too have never had a trouble free car experience. For example, I just received a recall notice on my 23 Honda Accord hybrid, for a possible fuel leak issue that could start a fire (you mean ICE cars catch fire??). I'm still of the opinion that my 22 R1T is the best vehicle I've owned and keeps getting better with time.
Ordered my Rivian yesterday and used your code.
@@iamnid That’s amazing- congratulations and thank you! What did you get?
Just got the rewards- you’re a superstar! Can I have your permission to give you a shout out? Let me know the details of what you ordered, delivery day is so exciting, I couldn’t sleep the night before!😂
there's a reason rivian is losing billions of $$s and going ch 11
Sure. Some people listen to Elon and his nonsensical rhetoric. Whether I’m proven right or wrong I believe in Rivian and I’m betting on them and putting my money where my mouth is. The bonus is regardless I absolutely love the car. It’s amazing, so either way I get to drive this incredible beast and enjoy it myself!
Rivian is still losing money, but going bankrupt could eventually happen, but not any time soon. They still have plenty of cash.
@@Japplesnap Agreed. I’m betting with my own money they won’t go bankrupt, but there’s the possibility of any current auto manufacturer going under with the big changes ahead, especially with China entering the fray in such a big way🤷♂️ Time will tell, but for now I get to drive something I thoroughly enjoy and makes me smile everyday. Maybe they become a second Tesla, maybe not. People constantly say companies are imminently going to go under. Tesla, Stellantis, GM, Rivian🤷♂️ Maybe one of them will maybe they all will, maybe none will.
@@True_Dad Well, one thing we know for sure is that Stellantis and GM aren't going under. The government already showed that The Big Three are simply too big to fail. And as far as Stellantis is concerned, people saying they are going under are completely insane. Stellantis had record profits and record revenues just last year. So a down year this year and even a down year next year just isn't going to matter in the long run. They are still a profitable company.
i was trying to find a video with a side view of these wheels and yours was the first, although the "wide" angle looks odd, but thanks for capturing thins angle. Still on the fence if i want to order with these All seasons or the 22's.
I went with these for the 3 peak mountain snow rating to avoid having to chain up. Also the softer ride. I think the 22s are fine, ride wise though. It’s not a huge difference, the 20s are softer but not massively so. Also if there’s any intention of off roading, the 20s or the rims that come with the off road pack are definitely a must.
To be honest as a R1S owner the premium audio system isn’t great so I wouldn’t upgrade.
Isn't the lower end system worse though? Also I've heard that future software updates would make the audio better. How did you decide between being locked in to the lower quality audio which likely has hardware limitations vs a system which probably has decent hardware that can be turned with software in the future? I agree from my one-time experience, the premium sound didn't sound anything like how a premium system should sound.
I agree texting would be nice but not apple car play. I have an android.
Agreed, my wife uses android auto in her Mach E. Anything though, I just want any sort of texting capability!
Those bumps on 52 are because the highway goes over an old land fill that keeps moving. Good video.
Yep, constantly under reconstruction, wild!
As a Tesla model y owner, I have to tell you that I dream about owning a Rivian car cause they look so fancy sporty great! The only thing holds me back is the concern of reliability and no FSD. Hopefully rivian will have FSD soon in next few years so that when my model y is ready to retire, I can get a beautiful looking Rivian.
Couldn’t recommend them more- hopefully some big highway driving assist updates this fall that will bring it closer to FSD… make sure if and when you buy, you use someone’s referral code if the program is still around!
God tier service. You likely getting an R2 or R3X?
Nope, I’ve got 2 brand new EVs and one used one this year, all great fits for us, so not planning to get an R2 or R3 for years. Super cool vehicles and I’ll take a look if I end up in the market sooner for some reason.
I bought my first EV...Tesla Model Y LR and it's the best car I've ever owned. Ive had no issues and im at 30k miles. I have rotated the tires every 7k miles but thats it.
Love it- EVs are just so great, glad to hear another positive experience!
jeez thats effin beautiful
lol, Temu version of upscale... that was spot-on
What is the difference in the Premium vs Standard Rivian Audio?
The premium is able to play Dolby atmos and Spatial Audio from Apple Music. The standard is a 12 speaker 600 watt system, the premium is an 18 speaker 960 watt system.
@@True_Dad Sorry. I meant what is the real world experience difference in the premium audio? I can't find any reviews on it and my spec currently has it applied. I've read the same specs you posted on their website but it's very difficult to find anyone to comment on the audible difference yet. Highs, lows, mids, etc? Did they find it worth the extra premium, etc. Were you able to test out the Premium audio prior to purchasing your standard Rivian Audio?
@@thedcgod Ah gotcha- I have only experienced the Meridian system for Gen 1 vehicles and the Standard audio system from Gen 2s. In my honest opinion I think the standard stacks up to the Meridian’s performance, I really do. As far as how that stacks up to the new Rivian upgraded system, I have no direct experience. I would assume it’s just better all around. The standard system sounds relatively well balanced but a little low biased and missing some of the mids and highs. As far as stock car audio systems go it sounds great to me, I’m not an audiophile but I do enjoy blasting music from time to time when there’s no kids in the car. It’s better than the Jeep Wagoneers Alpine system by a long way. The Wagoneer sounds sort of Hollow, I don’t know if that’s high mids lows or a bad setting. Rivian’s standard is much better than stock Toyota Highlander systems for the current models and on par with the Mustang Mach Es B+O system or better, depending on your preferences. The B+O system isn’t as loud and is a more high biased system with really great clarity but misses some lows. My daughter’s Nissan Leaf has the Bose system with a sub and I’d say the stock Rivian system has more base than that, despite not having a sub. The Bose system is good, but the Rivian’s is my favorite of all the above mentioned systems. That’s about all my personal experiences with recent manufacturers systems, but hope that helps! All that said, I’m a partially hearing impaired combat vet, so take it all with a pinch of salt😂
@@True_Dad This is great info, thank you!
Exactly what i need to see. Thanks
What the gen 2 standard, what is your real world range looking like (compared to the 258 miles Rivian states)?
Depends on my driving, on the freeways at 75 in standard height I’ll get 200-230 depending on if I’m in the mountains or not. Staying off freeways and doing my normal driving around town I’ll get the 258 or more easily. My lifetime average over 4k miles is at 1.7mi/kwh currently, I do a lot of pet mode and cabin preconditioning in the summer here, so I’m curious what that number looks like come spring time and a few thousand miles more.
