It's kinda weird thinking about how during the transformation Birkin grows another head that completely takes over and becomes the main head after awhile. Most viruses in the series alter the host until they are unrecognizable. But the G virus seems to have somehow "Birthed" an entire (Sentient?) out of Birkin somehow. Everyone always talks about G being birkin. But G-3 and on is clearly not Birkin.

Even though they're both good games, this is why I tend to prefer the RE2 remake over RE4. By the time you hit the PS2 era, graphics were good enough to where there wasn't much room for improvement (the only one getting what I feel was a really nice redesign being Salazar). By comparison, the blocky, low-res graphics of the PS1 era are a ripe ground for graphics designers to put new and original spins and details on enemies. And no place does that stand out better to me than the redesign of G. Truth be told, my favorite version of G's 1st form is the original game's concept art, and I don't feel like any game version ever really effectively captured that vibe I got. (I love how the eyeball in that one is more protruding than fixated in a static socket like in all his in-game designs.) That being said, I think this redesign, along with the other forms, really captures the "nature" of the G-Virus. In both the original and its concept art, G's various forms gave the sensation that it was "evolving toward a destination". But that's not really what G is. It's more like something that appropriates your "matter" in order to grow itself out of your body. And even in the first form that is evident on close look. You can see on close look at William's mutated sides that the new skeletal structure hasn't so much distorted and grown from the original as has formed independently. Note how it's disconnected both in the front and back. It makes it clear from an artistic standpoint that, even at this stage, this is no longer William. What's left of him is just "along for the ride" and is nothing more than flesh to absorb. It's also interesting to note that, while Birkin was shot on his left-hand side, the totality of the G mutation consumed his right-hand side...where the injection actually happened. G's 2nd form, on the other hand, looks like it perfectly captured the vibe of the original concept art. What I find interesting about this form is the left arm, or "arms". Based on a natural progression, one would assume that the larger, upper arm was William's original arm. Yet looking at it closely, one could also assume that the lower arm is William's original arm. If that's the case, it's interesting that G would have grown a new limb that isn't monstrous and distorted like his dominant right one. Another interesting detail is on the backside. To again lead to the nature of G that it consumes the host's flesh and grows new out of it rather than mutates, you see William's original spine and rib cage deflected and twisted to one side. Even more interesting is that even as G continues to mutate, that part of William never disappears but persists even into the 4th form. One final detail is that the "original" William is still functional in this body, as you can see his original head's mouth yells along with the new one in the animation. G's 3rd form is the closest we get to a symmetrical, "complete" monster as opposed to more random strands of flesh and bone. Again, we get the mystery of the left arm. During the cutscene, G's second, larger left appendage that's apparently geared toward balancing out the right one emerges from the back. A close look at the model indicates these are not "proper" limbs turning G into a hexapod, but are rather a collection of irregular bones and muscles mashed together to give the impression of a limb. Especially since, in the context of William's original body, it would almost emerge from where his neck was. But the fact that G grows this limb spontaneously makes one wonder whatever became of the smaller, lower limb on the original body. Did it atrophy as opposed to grow into the current smaller left limb? Just like in the concept art, there's only a trace of William even left on this form. By making the nose stand out, however, it adds a nice little detail you can really only appreciate viewing the model. It's like William is entombed in G's flesh. On the whole, this form...especially the emergence and development of a new "head"...is interesting. It's as if the G-Virus decided to not be so random and actually turn into something resembling the host species. Perhaps this is a last-ditch effort of the G-Virus to co-opt the original infected individual's physiology? One thing that G doesn't seem capable of is growing its own form of nervous system beyond the most rudimentary processes. Maybe it mimics a human at first because that's what's the most "ready to go". An easily unnoticed detail that really gets me is the teeth on the new head. They're basically an uncanny valley of actual human teeth, which would explain why G doesn't actually use them to attack. G's 4th form is the biggest departure from the original and seems to be the biggest redesign that leads into the idea that G is just "bits and parts smooshed together". While the hexapodal monster of the original was fearsome, this one feels far more appropriate and provides a nicer segue into G's final form. In fact, this form of G seems to have discarded the lower limbs all together. Coupled with the fact that the new head it spent all this time growing is now little more than a fleshy feature rather than anything functional, and this body indicates G is eschewing any desire to resemble the original host and is now just throwing whatever new body parts it can into the mix. There's so many details in this that just scream "degeneration". The small protuberance of a cluster of eyeballs from the previous form of G is now bulging and distorted and wreathed by tentacle-like bones; not wanting to be claws or teeth but just implements of death. The limbs are coming apart like twined rope that has been pulled loose in multiple places. The bones are growing more irregular and distorted until it's clear they have no relation to the original but are just focal points from the growing cacophony of muscle fibers. And of course, the icing on the cake, the emergence of fleshy tentacles and new limbs that are nothing but ragdoll vestigial. (Again, it's interesting that the new limbs themselves are, in fact, human in nature. This kind of counters the original idea that G is just random flesh and bone but actually does attempt to imitate its original host in a sense. On the other hand, this might have only been included to ramp up the aspect of body horror.) This may not be the original concept art, but this one most clearly captures, in my opinion, the idea the final form was going for. And finally, G's 5th form. It's definitely an improvement over the original, but... Well, let's put it this way. The 5th form did the job that you expect from any good older horror film. It caught you up so much in the moment that it served to distract you from the "wires or zipper". Making G so much huger, making it literally dissolve the train car as it moved through it, and replacing its crude tentacles and mouth with more distorted and disjointed limbs and appendages were all good things. Even the area in front of it represents the concept art well, with its smaller tentacles bearing the likeness of being tipped by human fingers and what appears to be an attempt at a malformed human skull on one side. Yet if you watch the animation, you'll see that the "backside" of it is nothing more than very generic tube-like 3D models painted to look like G's flesh with an occasional eyeball decal. In other words, the only part of G that was actually done for this one was the front view, so there's no real concept of what the thing looks like in its totality or if it grows even more grotesque. Kind of like an old monster movie where the only part of the monster that exists is the head and front limbs as a puppet, while the rest is hidden off camera. Its diminishes it a bit to me, although it still is quite nice.

Not gonna lie. After seeing G3 in just a straight model viewer, I would love to see it in Monster Hunter, as like a collaboration quest, a la Leshen/Ancient Leshen in Monster Hunter World. And G4 could potentially be like an *extreme* or Master Rank version.
