Yearly Fire Extinguisher Inspection
In this video, Cheston Farley so beautifully demonstrates how to perform a yearly inspection on a fire extinguisher at BYU-Idaho. Isn't his voice angelic?

Where is the base of that extinguisher
I work for a hospital in Central Florida. It is funny they are having our guys check the fire extinguishers once a month with weighing the fire extinguisher 🧯! They're requiring only the one's installed in the Communication Rooms to be weighed. They're using almost like a fishing scale. Have you heard about the need to weigh them once a month before? Yikes 😳😬
So many mistakes done by the technician. NO ONE should only visually inspect the tank and the hose, turn it up side down for a minute, throw a new tag on and claim it passed. Why didn't you discharge it? Why didn't you wash the tank? Why didn't you use an air gun, pressure clean the inside of the tank and inspect the inside with a light? Why did you not inspect the o-ring's? Please, no one just do what this guy did and think that the tank is passed with safety. This must of been a joke video!

I'm ashamed of how long it took me to understand these annual inspections were for extinguishers in businesses and commercial buildings.
There is no requirement to 'fluff' the extinguisher. The powder inside has been specifically designed to not pack down, even after many years of being in service. Additionally, flipping a pressurized vessel upside-down can be dangerous if it slips and falls, not to mention hitting it with anything. Manufacturers have released many statements saying the practice of fluffing the extinguishers is not recommended.
It might be a requirement for the company
can a broken gauge be replaced when it’s under pressure?
No
I see who ever had it apart last, got valve bodies mixed up or the wrong o-ring. The gauge face is too far off the center line of the label.

Wow this was in 2017
I can follow the comments and verify everything wrong on here, but what tells me these guys are rookies is… 1. Calling a supervisor for things the tech should know and 2. They are using BECO Lube
Definitely the wrong head, got mixed up with another when recharging, you can also see the hydro sticker directly behind head….. so at one time it was good…. I wouldn’t have used this extinguisher while doing a video!
Naughty fire extinguishers with solidified propellant get spanked
You should be introduced to the UL Listed Rusoh Eliminator which is the 1st complete redesign of the Fire Extinguisher in over 65 Years: www.teamfti.com/eliminator
You also need to check the gauge to see that the needle is in the green zone.
Around the 1:50 mark he mentions it
I thought the hose check should be done annually
You forgot to weigh the extinguisher just incase the gauge is faulty you idiot
Lol. My buddy just started servicing fire extinguishers. He doesn't know the difference between feet and inches on paper. Sounds like a hard job.
Gauge isn’t aligned. Wrong O ring from person who previously serviced it. Failed
What this video needs is to be removed from the internet before someone is injured or killed. He actually said if you run across an extinguisher thats not an ABC type, get with your "team" to identify it.
Question for the professionals with a hydro test. I understand it is every 12 years off manufacturers date but let’s say a new 2008 fx that wasn’t 6 year maintenanced u til 2017 for some reason. Would you still do the hydro test in 2020 or 6 years after the first 6 year maintenance in 2023?
Yes. There is no wavering on 12 year hydro test
Yes you would still have to do the Hydrotest in 2020. Usually what I do for customers in cases like this is if its within two years I will go ahead and hydrotest it so they dont have to pay twice. For example if the FE was new in 2008 and nothing was done to it until 2019 (assuming the FE is in good condition) then I would go ahead and perform the hydrotest on it(1 year early). If I only did the 6yr then the customer would then have to pay AGAIN for the recharge and hydrotest the next year. By going ahead and doing the hydrotest on it in 19 it saves the customer from basically having to pay twice in back to back years for the recharge. Also, doing this would also change the 12 year hydrotest cycle for the FE. The new test dates would now be the 6yr maint. test would now be due in 2025 and the 12yr hydrotest now due in 2031.
looking for a pyro chem red large tank with the silver tag and newer date code. psmc@hotmail.com
Sir fire chaiye shop ke liye You give me contact number plz Otherwise call me 8269303047
U fluffer !!!!
That extinguisher is very misaligned. Use the proper o-rings.
Landon Street OR 28 o-ring ?😂
It’s Not always the o-rings, it could be a different head from another unit that has different threading. Never mix up heads, or your extinguishers won’t be aligned properly.
@@FireAlarmTech7. some fire extinguishers are really hard to align back ,like the sentry fire extinguishers, those you need to tighten really hard
Gauge is not in alignment with the instructions, Doe the extinguisher need a HST? does the extinguisher need a 6 year inspection??? So much wrong with this video.
That one should never got tag good
Thanks for this. I've been paying someone big money to do it for me. Hell, this is easy. Cheers!
This is only the annual. Every 6 years you WILL need a professional to replace the media inside the tank. Every 12 years a cylinder test is required.
It has to be performed by someone permitted annually. You can't perform maintenance on your own and after watching this video it is now crystal clear why that is the case. In a millisecond he should have pulled that extinguisher from service.
you're paying for the liability to be on them not you lol
Don't hate.... Learning = $$$ now you can apply for a job doing this same easy work making easy$$$$ 079 CHI TWN SS
I'll take you out to the land fill and have you crawl up on a D-9 dozer when its 20 degrees just to find a part broken on a 20 lb. ABC. Slog back to the cold truck to make a repair and walk it back. Yeah its a license to print money. Right now I'm wiping my ass with 20s only because I ran out of 50s.
Wow to many want to be professionals commenting .. he is doing the job as any inspection would be doing BUT some would just install the tag without doing their job right. See it all the time .
No. Everyone is being kind. This guy has no clue.
same with trucks they pass inspection and then there flying off tire kills someone on the highway road. Point being dont skip any steps to save time. Peoples lives are on the line.
Did you check the date of manufacture or last hydro/6 year date? Did you actually blow out the hose? Was the label lined up with the gauge? Did you document the date of the extinguisher and serial number? As a licensed fire extinguisher tech I would not have passed this fire extinguisher.
hi can you send me the inspection sheet the you use
@@mellyomukuenambura5081 Good morning. Did you ever get a fire extinguisher inspection form?
One of the informative video I have ever watched! Indeed, providing a secure workplace is the responsibility of every owner. We cannot take a risk when it comes to fire. Installing fire extinguisher would be a good idea. There are companies which are working to provide services to have control over fire such as www.jimsfiresafety.co.nz . Taking a step a step toward fire safety procedure is really important and installing the fire equipment too.
False information, each particle is pressurized preventing packing. inverting, pounding on the bottom can cause the chemical to enter the pressure gauge to the point of preventing the internal pressure to correctly be indicated at the gauge thus showing full pressure in the extinguisher, or no pressure at all. Manufacturers of extinguishers have issued bulletins about this practice.
Wrong.
Pretty sure thats is a incorrect statement. But this whole video is full of incorrect statements so don't worry about it. Needs to be removed.
What is an annual inspection. There are monthly or more often inspections. Annual is maintenance done only by a certified person per many state and local fire codes.
that is lev4 inspection
I would remove this video before customers start reading comments. Lol
Hhahahahah truth
That’s a fail!! Wrong rubber seal. #fail
I can't believe you actually put this on youtube with the gauge and label being so misaligned!
If the gauge is not a threaded type gauge and only retained by a wire clip then all it takes is to turn the gauge in any direction which can possibly cause it to then lose pressure.
Great video. You only missed two things. 1st, NFPA 10 - 7.3.2.2 says the tamper seal shall be removed by operating the pull pin. You removed the tamper by hand then operated the pull pin. 2nd, you forgot to weigh it. Other than that great video.
Imagine weighing every extinguisher in a building with 100+ fx
@@billt689 If you don't weigh them then you are not following NFPA 10.
@@jayhouse345 we don’t weigh them unless they need maintenance it if they r just getting a tag
@@billt689 You can "hefty" weigh them for the monthly inspection, but if you are not weighing them during the annual maintenance you are not following NFPA 10.
@@ricardovega6252 Since you are asking this question that tells me you have not read NFPA 10 and the manufacturer's service manual.
Zip Tie?! I believe you mean “Tamper Seal”... Even if you understand it isn’t an actual zip tie, you should be careful not to cause confusion to anyone watching this video that is unfamiliar with fire extinguisher service & Safety.
We had a customer that would install zip ties rather than contact us to service the unit so they could save money. OSHA cited them for each extinguisher they had put zip ties on. Prior to OSHA, the local AHJ had contacted us as to why we were using zip ties instead of tamper seals. Myself and the AHJ met with the district manager of the company. I informed the district manager that I was obligated to remove our tags from the zip tie units. I had a hand held digital scale attached to the pull pin and the scale registered 27 pounds of pull before the zip tie broke. The district manager authorized our firm to correctly service every store in her district. Two days later the main office authorized us to provide service in everyone of their stores in the state and to be the ones to provide new Class K extinguishers rather than the stores provide them due to gauge damage from being shipped horizontal instead of vertical.
I would not have passed this extinguisher. The gauge should be aligned with the nameplate right in the middle just like when it is new. Whoever rebuilt this extinguisher might have used the wrong o ring and that’s why it’s off.
Zachary Rivera Agree 100%
Same observations. Looks to me like a non rechargeable extinguisher.
It is definitely a rechargeable extinguisher based upon the red pressure guage.
I wouldn't call it a "zip tie" either. That can be confusing.
Ehhhh. That looks like an aftermarket label. That's not a factory Ansul label. The person who applied the "new" label probably put it on crooked. If not, I agree.
