I’ve been fishing for and catching steelhead in NW rivers since about 1960 and have sadly seen the fishery decline precipitously, due to human ignorance. If there was one thing I might pass along it would be to pay attention to something longtime angling legend, Mr. Frank Moore, of North Fork Umpqua river fame, said many years ago: if you view yourself a “fisherman” that means you are by definition a conservationist, so don’t touch the fish! Keep your hands off of them! Throw your fly, lure, whatever else you’re using and hook and release them without removing them from the water. Once you’ve won the battle, use needle nose pliers to remove your hook after you get your obligatory pictures, and let them swim away. Their physiology is super well adapted to thriving in their environment, not held up for photo ops to prove to the world what a great fisherman you are. Handling them at all is a stupid human trait to a species that is barely hanging on. End of rant….

Would you recommend this, the ion, or boost blue for streamer fishing? I am looking at getting one of these rods to fish streamers for trout and smallmouth. Right now, the water is too hot to fish for trout during the day and I was just exposed to smallmouth fishing on the fly rod. We were making pretty long casts, maybe 60 feet or so to the smallmouth since the water was low and clear. Im wondering if the extra bit of length on a 9ft is what I need. I was throwing a Winston Alpha plus in a 7wt, so I am between a 6 and a 7. It was a bit tough for me to load the winston at least with a little line out, so I'm thinking the 6wt may be better especially for when I hand the rod to clients (I'm a new guide as well).

Solid video, Eli. This fly has been my #1 go-to trout spey pattern for at least a few years no. Absolute killer on the Deschutes. In fact I'll probably go tie some up after I drink a beer and take a nap.

Does Burk make 14' rods for longer lines? Have a 14' Sage (butter), would love a 14' 7wt or even a 16" 9/10 wt for long lines (80 plus feet) on the upper columbia (long swings are the key).

if you like burkie trout speys you need to try the 5125-4. Bit more niche for bigger water, bigger fish but such a fun rod.

Ok, first I love ❤ my 8134. As you say, casts like a dream and mine has good karma - have yet to take it on a trip where I got skunked. Days yes, trips (knock on my wooden head) no. But what’s the value of that box? Never mind UPS, need a Wells-Fargo truck to make that delivery!
