      Belts are worn in various combat sports, judo, BJJ, Kickboxing etc. When the system was aimed only for military Imi did not have the ranking system as we currently know it. After he adapted the system for the unarmed civilians, he added the belt system in order to create better structure for learning, and in order to give people a goal and sense of accomplishment/ achievement. Many KM systems today also use a Patch grade system instead of belts.

      This is an examination, not a street fight. You can’t kick your opponent hard in the nuts in a test.

  • @benwagstaff88
    @benwagstaff88 3 года назад

    To all the critics, trolls and keyboard warriors, lets get a few things straight; Firstly- This is a TEST, an exam, an assessment of skills that is part of the learning process in our organisation. Every student and instructor must undergo these types of tests in order to show that they have the necessary level of knowledge, and that they can apply this demonstration of skill under pressure and for a long period of time. Despite the length of the video, the exam lasted for over 2.5h and did not include any breaks. It is meant to show the level of commitment, control and mindset even under extreme pressure and when the fighter is absolutely exhausted. I quote words of former UFC heavyweight champion Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, who attended KMUR gym for the 2nd Dan test of my training partner: “it is the most intense test I have come across in any style of martial arts”. Secondly - this is not a brawl, a street fight nor is it a competition. You are not required to break your partner’s arm, leg or face in order to pass to the next rank - so I am sorry if you were disappointed not to have seen more blood or carnage in this video. Third - Was my performance perfect? No…. In fact, at the time, I wasn’t pleased with it. I thought I would perform a lot better, however in life things don’t go as expected - I lost control occasionally, got nervous, was caught up in my partners legs, and had to adapt constantly to the changing environment. After the exam I was handed a list of things that I needed to amend and to focus on, and believe me that I have done my best to amend it (especially prior to my 3rd Dan test which was very similar in content). I uploaded this video for my own personal accountability, to show to my personal students that (a) their instructor is doing exactly what he is requiring from them and that (b) things aren’t always perfect. Again, it is all part of the learning curve, and it is a vital part of our orginisation’s way of operation. We don’t just hand out a rank because of a length of time or period of attendance - we assess every student and instructor individually and ensure that they get the guidance and relevant pointers they need in order to progress to the next level. Lastly - I have zero desire to live up to any of your personal expectations. If you believe this is easy, or it’s all bullshit or that you are/can do better, then good for you! Please send me your home address and I will happily send you 2 stickers in the post; one that says “champ” and the other saying “expert”. I have earned my stripes on and off of the mats - I’ve been an officer in a IDF combat unit for 5 years, provided close protection to A’ list celebrities, ministers and oligarchs, have had several fights, in and out of the ring and I enjoy teaching the true art of KM all around the world. You’re entitled to your personal opinion, however don’t ever think you are better than anyone else. You want to criticise people’s hard work while sitting behind your little screen - it says a lot more about you than it does on the other individual, you come across as arrogant and ignorant. How about trying to help others by trying to show them/guide them to do better? That might actually require some skill, effort and hard work.

      I would just work in your practice if you can doing the strikes/holds from the standing positions without telegraphing the move and using your peripherals. This is some thing Bruce Lee worked a lot on. To stay completely relaxed and then explode into the technique without any warning or premeditated movements and not looking directly at what going for. It takes a lot of practice but can be done. Especially when simulating weapons disarms when they have vision on you. I would also recommend practicing the same techniques but moving backwards. This will make you more agile with footwork and will be more realistic to pull off since the opponent/weapon holder is coming towards you. Can use momentum against them. Also it’s good to show some sense of panic/fear so in reality the adversary isn’t expecting an attack since you look scared. I’m not sure the exact curriculum within style, but it’s always good to study other arts like kali,escrima,Silat as well. On top of studying other arts to apply to the basic sparring grappling. But end of the day we need to practice to what is going to be used in a real life confrontation, or it’s simply just a hobby and hopefully their will be carryover to real life. Which is funny because no one will criticize bjj, but the martial art is sooo watered down it’s basically tournament grappling ppl are training for. The problem is ppl think it’s self defense, and obviously their will be carryover but more specific to real life the better. And bjj is not very specific to real life situations. Keep up the good work always room for improvement

      In the spirit of helping people to do better, one has to question any test where the opposition just stands there waiting for someone to execute their technique and then continues to act comatose once it's been done, particularly if is this a black-belt-level test. This is most pointedly true in techniques where you are contesting control of a gun or any other weapon. A person who is willing to hold a gun on you is letting on, in no uncertain terms, that they are willing to kill you, full stop, and you can assume no less. If you are willing to contest them for control of that weapon, they HAVE to believe that you will use it on them in return, if only because THEY can assume no less just because you somehow might be "a nice guy". This means that, in a real situation, the person being disarmed should be, and is, fighting for their life every bit as much as you are. As slick as some of the techniques are, you see none of that; you see, instead, people standing around holding guns until they have them taken away. The opponents aren't even reacting to the techniques, much less opposing them. In the knife disarms, the only reaction of the opponent once engaged is focused on not getting unintentionally hit in the face and control of the knife itself is simply conceded. The most realistic part of the test was the free-sparing "randori" against two opponents with knives which, factually enough, would have ended up with the defender, energetic as he was, dead several times over - nothing against the skills of the defender, it's just a losing scenario, even with opponents attacking in mad rushes, but only at 3/4 speed. And, indeed, let's get a few things straight - sorry to burst your defensive little bubble, but pointing these things out only amounts to rational criticism, no matter what you choose to think it somehow means about me as an individual.

      "pressure test" But is that not the problem with most striking and throwing Martial arts? You really can't kill your training partner or knock him out daily. As I understand it this is a test to see of you know the moves and theory. I know they do the very same think in Judo to show you know the moves needed for the next belt level. This is not the time or place for sparring as I understand it. In Judo you may never use some of the throws or locks required for a certain belt level as the are not useful in real like However the training use of them does help you with your overall ability.

      @@Cuffsmaster When you start training judo, you progress to the belts for years and you participate in active sparring everyday. That. means. you. fight. every. day. In order to be productive in fighting you must fight, like any other skillset, if you want to draw good, you must practice that, if you'd like to be a mucisian, you must make music in order to become better. That's with all arts including fighting, in order to be good at it, you must practice it and in krav maga schools they do little to non full-contact fighting. On average - a blue belt in judo or a purple belt in BJJ or a 2 year muay thai practitioner or a black belt in karate or a brown belt in taekwondo or a practitioner of sambo, savate, kickboxing, boxing, wrestling and so on. All of these fighters and martial artist do fight almost every day of their training and if you fight, you're good at fighting, if you don't fight you're less productive. And as you know krav maga schools do little to non full-contact fighting. So on average, all of those listed above fighters and martial artist would be WAY MORE experienced in fighting than a krav maga instructor is.

    • @Cuffsmaster
      @Cuffsmaster 3 года назад

      @@jujiwastaken said "training in judo you progress to belts for years and ... active sparring everyday.. Fight each day.. I agree and perhaps the best street fighter against unarmed aggressors would be someone that has trained several times a week for years in Judo and boxing or two similar arts. I do believe it is better to remain on your feet in a fight. The truth is a KM practitioner can't grapple with someone with a blue belt in BJJ and his judo training would be useless against someone skilled in Judo. The same with boxing against boxer. But that is not the point or intent. In KM they learn the very basics of several arts including grabbling - striking - throwing - cinching - and stick fighting as well as gun defense. It seems to me that the goal is to have enough skill to defeat the average man on the street in a fight or to get him off balance so you and run away. Here is my objection to KM. It is less about their training because I think it does what they intend it to do for the lower level KM belts. . Many of the ones taking KM have no intension of competing or being very good in a particular MA. They are looking for self-defense not a sport. My problems with KM are 1) They become over confident after a few weeks training and believe they are better than they are. 2) many attend certification programs for a short period and never train again 3) they don't go to a gym or MA school for additional long term training. However this is not true for all. Many good KM schools also offer BBJ and kickboxing . One locally offers KM - BBJ - Kickboxing - wrestling. KM is more or less used as the foundation. A brown belt in KM from that school is a bad ass because of cross training that systematically added additional bbj and striking skills to KM. This makes KM more of a junior MMA program for those not interesting in cage fighting or sport fighting. What KM does do for the average person that has never been in a fight is 1) give them confidence to actually defend themselves and not be in a victim mentality 2) moderate skills to give them a better than average change against a person not trained in MA's. 3) teaches them to try to fight their way out and run when they can. 4) teaches deescalating skills in hopes of avoiding a fight with an angry aggressive person. Now if a KM could get a boxer to the grown he may have a good change or if the keeps a bjj guy on his feet but those are slim odds especially keeping the BBJ guy on his feet. Now as or myself - I should be honest. I was NOT trained in KM however I was trained in a program very very similar to it. It has been very useful to me on a few occasions which I can relate if you are interested. But I thought I would say a little about my background. My training is more like Marine Corp. Martial Arts (MCMAP) It was not MCMAP but more closely mirrored it than KM. However it was in part based on KM concepts.

      @@Cuffsmaster It's all about the martial artist, not the martial art. Not every technique works for everyone, everytime, every way against every opponent. But KM focuses too much on groin attacks or eye gouges, which may or most likely won't be effective against an opponent high on adrenaline, drugs or testosterone. And those are the people who are going to attack you on the street to take your life. You can obviously more than greatly deal with someone bare handed attacking you in a bar or a disco or out in a park or something those lines, but if this potentional "attacker" plans to get into street fights or attack someone, he/she'll be more than prepared to engage in combat. I even heard some "street fighters"(which btw there's no such thing, street fighters are just criminals) who wear cups on their testicles to prevent attacks or ski-glasses to prevent eye gouges. But overall, it's nothing about that. If you fight often, you're going to become good at the art of fighting, if you don't fight often, you're not going to improve much. And that's what KM school tend to do: Not spar

    • @Cuffsmaster

      @@jujiwastaken "its about the artist not the art. Never every technique works for everyone " KM as focuses to much on groin and eye gouges.... attacker prepared for combat .. if you fight often you get better ... not spar ..." Well the more skilled the attacker or attacker and the better armed they are can't cause the best MMA fighter to be overwhelmed and beaten. It happened to two a couple of years ago after they were fucking with a guys girlfriend. MMA can't beat a 2 x 4 bouncing off the skull. One can always find a way to cause any fighter to be beaten. As for the techniques of KM . They are designed at least for the lower belts to be simple, easy to learn and with less need to think about. It is designed that way for a reason. It is for the average guy on the street just like MAMAP is designed for the average marine and the system I learned was for the average agent. it is not intended to make an MMA fighter out of you. It is designed to be easy to remember and use. If that step fails then you are taught basic boxing - kicking and grabbling skills to get you out of a fight against the average person. KM will not make an MMA fighter out of you. You normally take self -defense classes two times a week. If you are more into it then you can take boxing and BJJ along with it. The progress is slow for the average KM student because the are not focusing on one are in KM classes they attend two days a week. IN a short period of time you get some basic skills that help you most times fight them off a little and run. But hell if they didn't have KM they'd be beat up . Now if you take KM - MCMAP or some other system like that to perhaps the Brown Belt level you will be a fairly good fighter. This will talk a a good while if you only go two or three times a week to training. Without adding BIJJ or Boxing or Kickboxing to MA you will still learn some grabbling and throwing and clinching skills but the training will be slower because you have so many areas to cover only training 2 or 3 times a week for an hour.. As for the eyes and groin attacks. Well if they were to be the final in all move then it would be foolish. Often they are a distraction for a right cross or kick to the body. Those that don't know anything about KM often put to much into this aspect and claim it is the main focus. As for no sparring most of the places have open mat days or even evening. But yes there is limited sparring in early training because there is no much to learn. IN early training sparring is not the only way to learn. I don't think KM is perfect but I do think a junior MMA type program is good for the average guy. Perhaps better than just focusing on grabbling or boxing or Judo alone. BJJ and Judo and Boxing are great but I don't think for someone just wanting basic self- defense and not interested in learning a Martial art KM is fine. He will not be an expert any anything and may get his ass handed to him at times but so will anyone else

      @VLADIMIR PUTIN I’m all for Krav Maga that’s been my favorite plan from the beginning, basically all of what it teaches other arts don’t teach you at all like pressure testing, dirty blows when needed, tactics, survival mindset, weapons fighting handling and disarms fighting multiple opponents and more I think it’s unique and extremely useful but I act like the Devi’s advocate to either get agreed with and prove my plan to be wrong or disagreed with proving me right. I’ve done this before and a lot of fighting people disapprove this because it’s not a popular concept but it makes complete sense They say the same 2 things which are that 1 it’s hard to find the right school because a lot of people are teaching Krav Maga from a like a 1 week course so it’s very watered down and that’s a case of the instructors and not the actual style so finding the right school is essential and 2 is that you won’t be proficient with the arts in it because it’s not practiced enough and what is the foundation of Krav Maga? It’s mma it’s mma it has bjj wrestling judo aikido Muay Thai boxing karate wing chun and more so I planned on taking mma on the side at least half to reinforce the foundation of Krav Maga and just for practice while I inherit all the mindset and and concepts of Krav Maga in the mma I take to reinforce Krav Maga. I know it’s not a popular belief but Krav Maga with some mma just seems like the way to go, while the popular way that everyone says to do is either just mma or Muay Thai and bjj but both are in Krav Maga and mma if chosen to take on the side and way more and Krav Maga teaches essential and useful teachings so my fixes to there concerns are find the right school, a reputable instructor and 2 do a little mma on the side to make you a better fighter and reinforce the foundation of Krav Maga

      @@aliasalias9768 I like KM but realize it does not make you an expert in boxing or kicking or grabbling or kali but it does make you better than average. It is self-defense not cage fighting and the goal is far different. That being said I do believe bjj would be a good match with KM. A school near me teaches KM - BJJ - Kickboxing - and wrestling. It is schedules where you take KM two nights a week and BJJ two to four. Also kickboxing two to four nights a week. But for most people taking KM just for self -defense that is to much time in the gym. Most KM students will not want to go 5 or 6 days a week. But if you did then you'd be one bad ass after a few years. But really, just how much training in KM do you need to get you free from an attacker and run away.? The goal is to not stay in fight but to get away. If you were just a brown belt in KM you could defend yourself in most cases. There are cases where you could have black belts in several arts and still lose. SO what is practical ?

      @@optimizedpran1247 I am no expert in KM or Judo. However I know that both use this type of display of knowledge of moves before getting a belt. They must show that the person seeking a higher belt knows the moved. I don't see this as a problem as it is just designed to show he knows what he was taught and can execute the moves. You can see the same thing happening with judo and BJJ to prove they know taught skills. To me these test means nothing as far as being able to defend yourself as I believe most of these moves or useless anyway. But that is true with Judo and some of the moves in BJJ as well. But as a last resort to save your life or the life of a love one you might try one of these moves. Assuming there is no other option. But you'd probably get shot trying to sneak up on the guy holding the gun. I would guess if things were that bad you'd of accepted that likelihood you'd be killed before starting the attack. They must to have a way of showing the guy learned the moves required for a belt so I find it ok but not something I'd be interested in doing. I'd prefer to spend more time on things I be more likely to use to defend myself. I mean it is ok but there is a very low percentage that you'd every use these skills. The only good thing is they wait until after you have learned the basics before teaching you these skills with a low percentage for actually being used in real life. But again ok I guess it is good someone knows the moves. I guess by the time you get to 2nd degree black bet you have learned the basics and now just showing off.
