David Lynch | Lights Out | Real Time Art + Ambient Meditation
Today I'm doing a real time, intuitive ink painting and ambient meditation.
I initially started this painting off as a metaphor for the severe, swelling headaches I'd been experiencing for the last several weeks.
Somewhere around the 30 minute mark, the painting decided it wanted to take a detour and I was merely along for the ride.
At the End, I was in full David Lynch territory.
Abstract. Fire. Electricity
As always, thanks for watching!

Wow! How awesome to hear first hand how an iconic bionicle was created! Did you make or help make any other sets for Bionicle?
Thanks so much! Yes, I have two other videos on my channel for the Nuparu and Makuta figures I designed.
@ cool! Nuparu Mahri was always my favourite aswell! Had good articulation and mask and the shield made for great posing
As a kid I remember playing in my pool with my barraki. I recall being so immersed In displaying them under water it was awesome.
This is great! I too used to bring my favorite GI Joe figures into the water or outside into the mud and rain to add extra drama to the battles haha. Thanks for sharing!
@ nice same here!
Wow, he not only created my favorite barraki but also my favorite mahri...it makes so much sense. Obviously the 2 designs that seemed the coolest to me came from one and the same mind. Nuparu is a work of art. The Skull almost reaper like snorchelling mask with the huge razorblade shield...awesome. Thank you
Thanks a ton! Yeah, you got it right on the nose there, Nuparu's mask is definitely very skull/reaper like. Even in the good guy's design I was always trying to fit some of my love of horror into the mix. It only makes sense because most masks are usually worn to ward off evil, so it makes sense for a hero going up against the Barraki to wear something equally as monstrous. I too love the giant double-bladed sword/shield.
Pridak was the last Barraki i got, but my favorite one. At first i didnt really know what to make of the red markings, then someone at the kindergarden told me it was BLOOD and my child brain went "holy shit...badass." The savagery of Pridak's design is unparalleled. Thank you for giving me amazing childhood memories.
Apparently I am a huge fan of your work, the phantoka are my favorite line. The end result of your "Maggot bomb" the tridax pod and shadow leeches are remarkably close to your prototype. I'll have to test it next time I can pull some bionicles out of the attic, but I feel like the pod was 90% gravity release. From a fan, thank you for your hard work and innovation!
Wow, thanks Blaine! So glad you found the channel and for taking the time to compose your thoughts. I'm just happy I was able to share a chunk of my design career and that fans have responded so well to the behind the scenes look at a few of the figures. Thanks so much for sharing! If you haven't seen the other two videos I did on Pridak and Nuparu, definitely search those out on my channel. Cheers!
By far my favorite Mahri. Simple and effective.
Hey, thanks so much! I agree, I don't subscribe to the idea that characters designs have to be overly complicated or bulky in order to standout or be heroic. Always been more of a fan of smaller heroes like Bruce Lee for example, small and unassuming frame yet very powerful.
This is my favorite one. Still have it in my shelf.
Oh wow, it's always incredible to hear that that these figures are still so beloved and on people's shelves. Thanks so much for watching and sharing!
I really love the original torso design it looks awesome and moves really well.
@@calupis5176 thanks, I thought it was really important for people to see that there’s always so much more thought going g on behind the scenes but no matter what field you’re in, budget and resources always limits what is possible. Thanks for watching!
This figure was my first back in '07, and was my gateway drug into the franchise. Thanks for kicking off a huge part of my childhood.
@@jaffarebellion292 ah that’s awesome to hear. I get a mixed bag of responses on Nuparu’s design and I welcome everyone’s feedback but it is great when individuals such as yourself clicked with the design. It really comes down to what one’s idea of stealth and leadership looks like. Also, how the character is written plays a huge part in the perception because at first glance on the shelf is what sells toys. Thanks for sharing!
HAHAHA scare little children. more like scare over worried parents and adults who think kids can handle things.
@@MrM.E.R. Absolutely correct. The marketing dept. was more scared of Pridak’s “blood” than any child would ever be.
@@brianellisart Yeah, i was probobly 10 when the Barraki came out, I didn't even think I looked like blood until I heard of the controversy many years later. And if I had thought about it, I would probably think, yeah, that makes sense. Nice paintings btw.
@ thanks, I appreciate it!
What a fantastic design. The Phantoka line was the most memorable part of my childhood besides the Barraki. Thank you for sharing the design process!
Hey thank you so much! So glad to hear from fans such as yourself and it means a lot knowing people find the design process interesting. I figured I'd just put these videos out as a way to catalogue some of my design work through the years and the response has been humbling. Hope you have a great holiday and new year.
Ho-ly that piece at 9:19 is absolutely incredible.
Really appreciate the kind words, mate. Glad you like the piece. Thanks a ton for watching!
the things i would do for the original squid launchers
surely someone in the bionicle community has 3d printed a few squid launcher alternatives... just an idea
"one of the large sets came in overbudget" gadunka. it was gadunka
Haha
The Barraki were easily the most experimental of all the bionicle lines. And in an era dominated by the stiff and monotone Inika torso build, Pridak was a breath of fresh air!
@@anonymous-hz2un Appreciate hearing that. Yeah, there was definitely a feeling of change amongst the designers at the time. Change it up, go beyond what was expected.
I recently got the entire team of the Mahri. I’m eager to see your work first hand my man, very great design considering everything that condition those times
Wow, congrats on the full Mahri line acquisition! Thanks so much for dropping a line and checking out the vids!
Also why did they do without the double balljoint
That's just how it goes sometimes...
I knew it was blood
ha!
That artwork is a great rendition of Nuparu, would've loved to see more Bionicle designs from you
Really appreciate it! Would have been fun to contribute more but I did the best I could with the time I had on the team.
Brilliant
Humbled! Appreciate you watching and taking the time to comment!
Learning about the squid launchers broke my heart. As a kid, I always wondered why the CGI launchers from the website's animations looked so different (much wider, sort of fan shaped - is that similar to how you remember the originals looking?)
Sorry for the late reply! Hmm, possibly, what I really remember was the design of the front loader portion that holds the squids. The final design has a sort of scoop cut out on the top that was put in to make sure the squid would flop out if it was pulled back too far. This was intentional because the further the squid was able to be pulled back, the greater the distance it would fly with greater force, thus, it could possibly rupture a kid's pupil. The original did not have that safety fail scoop, so when the squid was put in, it really locked in and you could pull that thing as hard as you wanted without it flopping out and, believe me, it soared across rooms and could totally put an eye out. While the prototype was phenomenal, I don't believe anyone would want their child to lose an eye in a freak accident and certainly lego would not want to be sued into oblivion. Really appreciate the comment! Thanks so much for watching!
“From 20 years ago” don’t say that!!!!!! I don’t wanna think about how old these pieces are
@@cowboybarbaryn1302 20 years… that’s Ancient by now haha
Jesus this is so good. Pridak was already a great character with all that Lucifer-like story and sociopathic pride but having this in-depth explanation on his design makes me value him more.
Glad to hear this! I appreciate it when others appreciate the behind the scenes details. Thanks for watching!
I find it insane that many ideas and designs were discarded or compromised. They ended up with models and figures that likely contributed to the decrease in sales. Bionicle is filled with so much untapped potential.
@@CadmeanLotus I totally understand what you’re saying but I personally don’t see it as compromised. It only appears that way after seeing some behind the scenes process as every design must go through refinement to hit the budget. So the figure that comes out is the final design. The super cool MOCs online are not reflective of the design world at all as they are just pure aesthetic exercises that could never go into production because they’d be way over cost. Without a company or parent paying the bills, there’d be no Bionicle. So while infinite budget MOCs are cool, they are a false impression of “potential” because they’d break the bank in the real world of budget/profit.
Interesting find while I'm planning a makuta of my own
Right on, good luck with your build!
@@brianellisart main issue right now is I don't have the makuta torso to test potential activators for the tridax pods
@@djt08031996 ah yeah that’s a difficult one. Perhaps a custom torso build like my prototype? hot glue & a girl’s hair claw clip was my base with some modded foot/claw parts.
@@brianellisart I actually have the start of a plan. The makuta torso with its accompanying ribcage, then a metru red Av-Matoran torso to mount her wings, neck, and Av-Matoran connection with the standard hip piece sandwiched between the two torsos. I just don't know if there are any pin/axle holes on the makuta torso so I can feed something through the Av-Matoran torso to activate the ribcage as intended
@@djt08031996 good luck! Let me know how it goes
Mahri aren't my favorites and this is by far the worst of the toa, like, it's just the same toa inika build with no new stuff, only a mask, not even the toa nuva were this lazy.
@@TheAutobotPower oh awesome! Really appreciate it, glad you dig it so much!
I just got this today from a friend! Thank you for making an inspiring design!
Wait, you were sent this video or an actual Pridak? This is important, as it determines just how good of a friend this person is 😂 Thanks for checking out the vid! Tell the friend I send my thanks too!
@@brianellisart yes the actual toy! I played with it for a bit and its really cool! As a matter fact I have it right next to me now!
@@Coreysvideosofnonsense oh wow! Incredible! That’s a solid friend haha Did your friend manage to actually find a sealed figure/canister? From what I see in the community those sealed sets are hard to come by. Glad you were able to find this video too and get a sneak peek behind the final design.
@@brianellisart yup! Seems to have all the pieces and still in good shape
@@Coreysvideosofnonsense that’s a killer score! Well done!
Hi! Question, how did you end in the Bionicle team/what did you study to get there?
I went to school for Industrial Design, which is more of a focus on product design for human interaction. But my portfolio and my thesis was more focused on Industrial Design processes for film, entertainment & design applications. This entertainment focus of my portfolio was all self taught however because that's all I did growing up was sculpt, draw, create rough makeup fx and make short films on my digital camcorders. So I combined my love of film and story with my professional design background and I submitted a portfolio to LEGO showing my versatility as a functional product designer as well as a story and character designer. This may seem commonplace today but back in 1998 there were maybe only a handful of schools (mainly in California) that had some kind of focus on entertainment. So my portfolio was... not necessarily what you'd expect to send to a toy company. I worked on different story based toys/teams for several years at LEGO and was then approached by the manager of Bionicle at the time to possibly come work on that team. That's pretty much the short version. If it sounds like it was an easy road, believe me, it was not. I worked my butt off during work hours and outside work hours to get noticed at LEGO and try to open multiple career avenues within the company. I detail a lot of this in one of my other episodes, if you haven't seen that and are curious, I'd recommend checking it out. ruclips.net/video/pNMUObuZK9k/видео.htmlsi=xEhXykp5gFknwN9H I know a lot of the bionicle fans on here only want to see Bionicle content but I think it's worthwhile to recognize the artist behind the work and to see their other art to get a sense of where their inspiration and creativity comes from. Appreciate you watching and asking!
@@brianellisart thank you so much!
It should have been a Titan.
Myths last longer than Titans ;)
Your skill is so fun to watch!! Do you have any colors other then black in the ink? I would love to see one of your lego batman story board pics, one done in color.
@@J.G.22 storyboard animatics are not in color because their purpose is to quickly convey the camera angles, shots, timing & action for the animation team. color would take too long, much faster production process to just do them in grayscale.
Not sure how missed this one. You tube notifications suck.
Holy Joker dog Batman, that's a good looking dog. Love you Burton!! I love all your costumes!!! Brisket taste good??
@@J.G.22 Burton makes the best Joker. Brisket was perfect!
Fantastic work as always!
Hey, really appreciate it!
Dawwww, that Batman and joker costume setup was great! Very cool that you keep to the old school and try to emulate that more than most artists :)
Thanks so much! Really love the old school vibe, so easy these days to just make everything dark and brooding by default, so need to give some love to the old, lighthearted & fun Batman.
Could you imagine working with Lego again? I loved the aesthetic you gave to Bionicle and currently Lego sets just feel like boring, overly saturated slob.
@@Jesus_Wojak Well, I worked with them on many projects over the years after I left Bionicle and the company. Do I have a desire to work on Bionicle again? Not particularly. I am not really fascinated by toys so my approach was never one of admiration but always from a purely design driven point of view. There are lots of people who are very good at their jobs or professions but don’t necessarily enjoy it. However, I take storytelling very seriously as well as the design process. The translation of ideas from thought to reality and the procedure by which I get there is where I derive my satisfaction, and I take that very seriously. Lego hired me for my skillset, I feel like I did my job successfully & when it was time to move on and grow as a designer, I followed my gut and left. I generally think of my career similar to that of a roaming swordsman for hire. I’m good with my sword and very capable in my work but do not enjoy being tied to a “master”. Occasionally I’ll take a job here or there for money but I’m more content to just stand in a field, observe nature and let the background world and unimportant corporate nonsense fade away. I think if you feel strongly that the Lego sets are boring and overly saturated, I would suggest moving away from their product. If it’s a nostalgia thing, I think it’s more important to be honest with yourself and ask what do these toys actually do for you and your happiness? Probably more than you asked for but I prefer to give an honest answer than to give a fake one.
I started searching for gauze finger cots for all the smudging. They might be fun to check out and play with. Or mini swiffer sticks lol....... I use to make them with coffee stir sticks. MacGyver style. 😅

Hey, thanks for watching! Really glad you found the videos and enjoyed the Nuparu process!
This pen or the Pentel pocket brush ? Or just buy both lol
Haven't tried the Pentel pocket brush, might test it out. I tend to just go with whatever tool is available or crosses my path and more so if it works well with my experimental whiteboard paintings. The Kuretake feels good on both paper and whiteboard, but I think it's a more interesting tool when applied to the whiteboard. It becomes a smeary, oily paint brush and gives you multiple kinds of textures and effects as opposed to just whatever tooth paper you're using to give textures. Hope that gives some insight!
