there is no before and after schizophrenia. even if you have remission or long term loss of symptoms, a doctor will always be able to see if you are schizophrenic via brain scan. while there is examples of people developing schizophrenia late in life and also due to drug use, but most often schizophrenia doesnt have a clear beginning point.
sorry i shouldn't have claim further, i dont really believe louis wain have schizophrenia, he mostly have autism since autism back then was seen as another form of schizophrenia or seen as schizophrenic.@@ilovemycat52
him having schizophrenia is just a theory some folks made. It was never confirmed ofc. for my Theory (besides my autism theory) I think he just did it to experiment his art skills, he still drew normal cats after that??? it's not permanent.@@ilovemycat52
AI recently does similar things. Example is the happy rabbit AI created images. AI is also schizophrenic; walking in a dreamscape unbound by the expectation of reality.
The kaleidoscopic paintings look almost like dmt entities. Maybe he was having visions through the veil and was unsure what to make of it. When you go from mundain pictures of kitties to otherworldly geometric entities its hard to write that off as mental illness maybe a shamanic awakening?
He may have had mental deterioration but I doubt that he had schizophrenia. The onset of schizophrenia happens when people are in their late teens or early twenties and manifest during a stressful situation. He was committed to a mental institution when he was in his sixties. The time that he was most famous was actually in his early twenties. And some of the art that you show as before schizophrenia he did when he was in a mental institution.
I have to ask, I don't think id heard anyone clarify, but was he still drawing cats as he saw them? Or was he transforming them? No that's not a suggestion , I'm asking. The after drawings would mean a lot more , if he looked at them and said "it's a cat"
Please don't perpetuate the quasi-hypothesis of schizophrenia, that false claim was put forward by a doctor named Maclay in Bedlam hospital who wanted to gain prominence at Louis' expense, which unfortunately, he successfully did. He proclaimed Louis' wonderful abstract Cubist-like drawings to be gradual deterioration of mind - although none of the images were dated - and Louis was never diagnosed with schizophrenia, especially not in today's scientific sense. He is thought to have been on the mild side of autism spectrum, and he had brain injury during his lifetime. His "abstract" drawings are experimentation with color and geometric shape - those patterns were present on textiles his mother created. Mind incapacitated by schizophrenia would have produced gibberish not wonderful intricate highly-structured abstract art. By the way, Louis did create classic non-abstract cat drawings later in his life, after the abstract experimentation and Bedlam period, thereby completely refuting the false claim of his colorful art being product of ruined mind. If Maclay produced only 1% of wonder Louis Wain produced during his lifetime, he could have been considered a lucky man, instead he is just a mediocre doctor and on of Louis' exploiters, bringing his quasi-medical views where art-expertise was needed.
His art became, arguably, better after his diagnosis. The prior artwork is great and has form, but the latter has passion, interest, and imagination beyond the boundaries or confines of what we see. Though it's clear that there is a lot of psychedelic influence in some of the work, it is still a representation of his work post-diagnosis
I don’t think this is a visual representation of anything. He’s very skilled before and after psychosis. He just changed his themes later in life to psychedelic look. Maybe incorporated his hallucinations colors and shapes? Either way i’m pretty sure he didn’t “forget how to draw cats” lol
The battle of the MD's over here. just to be fair; schyzophrenia could be a spectrum like autism and everyone could have it in different levels/intensities/forms, so DONT JUDGE. DONT TRY TO LABEL IT AS FUCKIN DEMENTIA OR WHATEVER IT MIGHT BE. IT IS STRANGELY HORRIFI/FASCINATING HOW IT WORKS, & TO TRY TO UNDERSTANDING IS BEYOND OUR REASONING YET WE ALL TALK LIKE FUCKIN PHD'S ABOUT IT edit: Man, he really loved cats :)
When you see color have life, take your breath when you are asleep in its dream, you walk without eyes, listen without ears, speak without tongue. You live together
Please note: Wain DID NOT DATE his paintings. There was no "progression" into abstraction. A psychiatrist in the 1930s arranged the paintings to fit his theory. Wain probably had Asperger's and not schizophrenia.
After the schizophrenia you can see the eyes on the cats became the focus of his art. Its like constant paranoia , like someone is watching you.
I do not think he had Schitzophrenia, its been debunked

Fact: He really liked patterns when having schizophrenia
Notice how his drawings after schizophrenia look exactly like a DMT trip....... Very interesting
So, he became a great artist.
is it just me or did his paintings somehow get better
louis wain dind't have schizophrenia
Welp any confirmation? where did you get this information from?

No creepy pasta or anything compares to this. Thankfully I am allergic to cats.

Is it bad that I was drawing stuff that looks like his later work when I was a kid? Someone please tell me that's ok...
It wasn’t schizophrenia, he suffered a head injury.
The kaleidoscopic paintings look almost like dmt entities. Maybe he was having visions through the veil and was unsure what to make of it. When you go from mundain pictures of kitties to otherworldly geometric entities its hard to write that off as mental illness maybe a shamanic awakening?
is this in chronological order?
Psychiatry is pseudoscience he had a tbi
the later pieces remind me of DMT or psychedelic trips. Energy fields, geometric patterns. For such a drastic change in style, it is intriguing.

RAHHH NOOO, I HATE THE FALSE NARRATIVE ABOUT SCHIZOPHRENIA AND THE CATS RAHHHH
"I am happy because everyone love me..."

For those who are curious this is his actual final drawing before he passed arthive.net/res/media/img/oy1000/work/af2/378060@2x.jpg
That was enough to make me cry
As someone with schizoaffective not being able to draw as accurate horrified me. Now? I see it as another challenge.

Bro was the first furry artist and had bad luck :( (I’m joking with him being a furry artist)
It looks like mental illness makes us better artists.
Beautiful transition. Wish I had schizofrenia
Extraordinary beautiful
Man, that guy really likes cats

still very beautiful

His images would be great for a kids book
I like to think it wasn't the schizophrenia that made him draw this. More that he pushed his creativity while being hospitalized
Depois disso o Gato de botas foi criado kkk
I think the last of his paintings was a cat happy saying that everyone loved him
Any reason why he was so obsessed with cats?

He likely already had it.
Rest in peace Great Artist.
in real 240p
we get more and more obscure the longer we go on.
Only the very last was unrecognizable as a cat.
Honestly, it's fascinating and he's obviously talented but ALL of his paintings made me uncomfortable.
