Hi, my battery measures 13.6-13.8V on the dashboard when driving. When turn of the engine, battery voltage drops to 12.2. After parking 1 day, battery is 11.8V. There was a consumer during sleep mode. That is fixed, but battery still drops down to 11.8 after one day parking. Alternator is replaced one month ago. What should I do? X5 3.0i 2004
Had the same problem, turned out to be bad battery (drain overnight) check that
@@bimmer1110 I have like the exact same readings. But old alternator. But battery is new haha.
@@willemgijs3803 barely fixed here dude. Got new battery, but alternator charges it 13.8 to 14.1, which is not good. It been to be atlest 14.7 and above with all accessories turned on
What if voltage readings keep fluctuating? Could it be bad cables?
Mine is also on 142 and 9 so what does this mean everything is okay or not and when starting goes 'aar 128a
It's an absolute must that the E46 has some sort of dash light at any given time
That's the handbrake 😂
@@roscodabosco81 your right. I have an 06 M3 and mine just says "Brake" it looked like the brake pad light
It’s not an E46 if there isn’t a dash light in. Best way to tell if it’s a purebred 🤣🤣🤣
Mine was at 116, after i started its still 116, but when i open windows up and down turning aircon on and of headlights and so on it goes back to 116,so this is a battery problem? Cuz i have battery light on I have 320d 110kw
Hi mate. Clean terminals and replace fuses mate
@@rezamotin7305 After driving for a bit today, it it bearly started and lights started to flash so I think its generator, cuz when driving it slowly came down to 102 and that was it, or maybe it could be generator fuses. but its a bit weird that I was able to drive for 3 days and I drive a lot every day, maybe it was charging sometimes cuz battery light was flashing sometimes
Thank you. Good informative video. 👍

My thoughts exactly!
Hey mate I'm driving E46 320d I just replaced my alternator and bought a new one, after installing the new one it still doesn't want to charge the battery but the light of the battery on the cluster is gone, kindly assist.
Eeeee
Mine shows 13.9 under load, radio etc. Does this mean its gone bad?
No that’s quite normal mate. Try disconnecting and cleaning all terminals then run a trickle charge for a couple nights 👍🏽
Hi my e46 325ci auto 2003 battery light came on eventually car died on my while driving got new battery started right up 2 days later battery light back on and checked voltage show 17 please help
Your battery is being fried.
Thanks
Hi, just did the check on mine and when the engine is running it fluctuates very quickly (to the point it is hard to read) between 13.8 and 14.3. Could this point to a voltage regulator problem?
Thanks this really helped me
I just tried this for my z4 battery, I get a number of 117/118 when I tried. That mean my battery is getting close to its end?
Hey, my battery measures at 12.4V and alternator 14.3V. However, the battery light is still on. What should I do?
lazerduck is definitely recommend getting it plugged in to an OBD2 reader. It may be early signs of alternator issues
Reza Motin Thanks for the reply! However, I just replaced the alternator because the original one stopped charging. I’ve cleared OBD2 codes but the battery light is still on. When the battery light came on (with the old alternator), it also showed that a rear light was out, however, all rear lights seem to work.
lazerduck I wonder if it’s some loose cabling? I’m not sure at this point. You should join the E46 group on FB they’re a really friendly and experienced bunch maybe one of them has come across this problem before?
What if it says 11.4 instead of 12.2? Does that mean i need a new altinator?
Battery
When car is running I'm getting 13.9 then it fluctuate to 14 then f**** way back down to 13.9 fluctuate fluctuate back to 14 is that normal just not too long ago it was at 14.4 on the drive
Isreal Perez that’s pretty normal mate. Nothing to worry about for sure.
@@rezamotin7305 thanks its just am trying to solve my p0604 problem car starts but then sometimes it won't start then I got to turn the key off and then it'll start up again RAM memory error in the computer
Sorry what is the equivalent of name dropping i’m so confused
I'm surprised you're only getting 9.1 MPG! LOL
Good idea
Thanks Reza for this great video. I tested mine, with all the accessories on or off, voltage doesn't to go above 13.3; starting at 11. 6 ish. Starter cranks fast and strong even in temps around -25 C, here in Canada; however it sometimes misses completely only giving a hissing sound; and sometimes starter only spins no crank, then when I push on the accelerator it starts nice and strong; no whining. Any thoughts on what could be happening. I don't want to get stranded one day. 2004 X5, 3.0i Thanks.
Andy Nav likely a failing alternator. Doesn’t give out as much voltage as needed
Hallo. Thanks for the video. my problem is when i check the voltmeter, only around 12.5 when my engine running with all the electricity(sound system, lights,ac) is it normal? Or my alternator not doing very well? Thanks (sorry for my bad text) *asian 😁
Hey Rian Kopi, thank you for your comment. Are you still using the original battery and alternator? Theses motors and now abit 20years old it may be slowly fading off. Let me know what battery and parts you’re using! Rez
Reza Motin, thanks for the reply, yes i am using original alternator. But of course not original battery. I juat change battery last week. My car is bmw 325i e46 2001. Now i worry for my new battery, if i not change the alternator. Because the voltmeter test(only 12.5 while engine on and electricity on) seems not in normal condition.
@@riankopi6348 ga normal bro harusnya 13 an - 14 an kalo udh jalan mah
Thanks for the video. Everything is working fine but the battery red dashboard signal is appearing sometimes and then goes away and and then on...randomly. Any ideas? Thanks
Hi Soro. Thank you for your comment- have you checked your terminals? If not, ensure you had a good, clean connection with no rust or scale. If so, clean with a wire brush and renovate the conductors. Let me know how it goes mate
Reza Motin thank you very much. Will try that for sure!
@@Ultimatebeatdastreet I've just red your comment so I need to ask... what happened? Mine just started to turn on and off that red battery lights
A fully charged battery is 12.6. @12.2 is about half way charged and wouldn't hurt to put a charger on it.
12.2 might be a good reading because there is a load on the battery when the car is unlocked and doing testing. The cabin light could be on if the testing was started quickly after entering the car.
Does this work for an E46 BMW M3?
Renaissance Man hi, really sorry for the late reply- if you haven’t figured already, it does work for e46 M3
hey @sittee. Have you sorted this issue? if no, swap the alternator for a new one. you may have installed a defective item even if its fresh off the line from BMW.
My car is BMW 318i, 2003. I had changed alternator and battery last month. However the battery warning light shown up. On idle I have 12.2 and when I turn the engine on 14.1. Any advice? Why battery warning light has shown up? How can I clear it?
Yes, the program need to be reset. I did it at BMW service.

Had similar results but with different numbers.
