How a Central Uganda Community Spends Farming Profits Collectively
For a long time farmers in Kasasa, Kyotera district, Central Uganda, have looked at maize as their cash cow, because of their strategic location (near the Tanzanian border). However, a cocktail of; lack of extension services, cash to scale up production, and exploitative market middlemen had frustrated most.
They are now using the 'power of community' to sell collectively. They have founded a 'bank' where farmers save their money after selling the harvest. Out of the approximately 300 members, they have formed a 30-member committee that decides on how to invest their interest.
