    Just a camper shell (with doors/windows) using Total Composite panels is around $18000. I like the Capri Retreat camper which weighs approximately 1350 LBS for a minimum setup I would want (to over 1500 LBS) and would be around $22000 the way I spec'd it (but I'm looking to build one). So, if it does what you want or need and you enjoyed the process then it is worth it. The jacks are needed unless you have 6 people who can load it for you!

    You can absolutely buy a used camper cheaper. BUT not 400 lbs. In the long run - however - I don't think you'll be able to sell this for what you have in it. If you can live with the extra 1000 lbs I think a used camper is the best solution.

    I think you need to factor labor and build quality in for a true cost comparison against whats on the market. Your build would be considered top end custom in relation to a production unit. My compliments for a job well done. I have owned a light weight popup basic 2006 Bronco camper with three way refriguration, two burner stove, propane heat, 15 gallons cold running water (no wasre tanks) and lights. The unit had spent some time stored without cover and the oriented strand board sheeting took a beating. Yeah the unit was marketed as fiberglass but i didnt think you could call it that when it was so thin and the panel edges where not sealed so the rot spread from there. My big worry was the lift mechinism would fail or tear out which would make it unusable. I got what i paid for it and we did use the heck out of it but were never the less relieved when it left on another's truck.

    • @GeorgiaAstronomy
      @GeorgiaAstronomy 2 месяца назад

      @montanadan2524 Thank you! Certainly we have to factor in time and energy, but you cannot put a price on it. I do get having something used and plenty glad when it goes over the horizon and an air of relief comes up!

    Do you still have the G11? I’m considering the GM811. I’m also considering the iOptron GEM45/CEM40. I understand the G11 is a heavier mount and has greater capacity than the GM811. Which mount has more consistent guiding, the G11 or GEM45? Any experience with customer support with both companies? Thank you.

    • @GeorgiaAstronomy
      @GeorgiaAstronomy 3 месяца назад

      @KJRitch I got rid of the G11 years ago. I've had two iOprton mounts, the CEM60 and more recently the GEM45. The GEM45 is an excellent mount. Far superior than the G11 in my opinion. While it was nice, it took a lot of 'fiddling' to keep it tracking well and always needed adjustment. The GEM45 , actually all of iOptron's mounts are very 'plug and play'. The magnetic clutches are easy and eliminates the need for constant adjustments. I've had the GEM 45 for several years and have had zero troubles with it. Same could be said for the CEM60. As far as customer support, both companies were very responsive. I had to return the G11 originally for a clutch issue but they handled it quickly and efficiently. IMO, iOprton makes a superior mount though. If you are looking for a large payload, consider the CEM70.

    We live about halfway between Savannah and Augusta on the east side of the Georgia. I’m enjoying your project and thinking about doing something similar using my 6 x 12 utility trailer. My grandson and I love to go camping together and recently camped near Amicola Falls in a mini-van. It was doable but tight quarters. What part of Georgia are you in? How do you think this system would work with the outside skin being metal instead of fiberglass? I don’t think I would do well with the fiberglass.

    • @GeorgiaAstronomy
      @GeorgiaAstronomy 4 месяца назад

      Hi Kevin. Thanks for watching! I'm in Cumming Ga, so not far from Amicola. I think metal would be fine if suing aluminum. Certainly over the 2" foam would be well insulated. Not sure about weight though.

  • @joecimbak3974
    @joecimbak3974 4 месяца назад

    In retrospect...do you think the design NEEDS the 1/4" luan skin on the exterior? Or would you now just do fiberglass cloth and epoxy on the entire exterior walls sans the luan plywood skin? I LOVE your design and craftsmanship. I want to do this. I am pouring over your videos and loving the conceptulization. I'm lucky in that I have a truck with an 8' pickup bed so mine can be a bunch longer. This is a cool concept...light and strong and well insulated. I live in the South so I need to keep the heat out more than I need to keep the heat in! Smile.

    • @GeorgiaAstronomy
      @GeorgiaAstronomy 4 месяца назад

      Thanks! No. I would have omitted the luan and just done 2 more layers of 1708 and one of 6 ounce for inside and outside. At the time though, the fiberglass and resin was more expensive than the luan.

    • @GeorgiaAstronomy
      @GeorgiaAstronomy 5 месяцев назад

      In retrospect, Probably didn't need to notch the plywood. I believe the only reason I did was due to possibility of there being 'dead space' between the outer plywood and the foam on the wing. I'm sure I could have used som filler there if truly needed.

    For additional clarification the provided washer is called a "wave washer", the notched washer that is sandwiched near the clutch handle is a needle bearing (thrust bearing).
