The Plague by Albert Camus. Part 5 Chapter 5
'It was plague. We've had the plague here.' You'd almost think they expected to be given medals for it. But what does that mean, 'plague'? Just life, no more than that."
It's taken a while to get round to doing the last chapter. Partly because I've been busy and partly because I hoped to coincide the ark of the story with the ark of Covid. I've had two vaccine shots now so hopefully my Covid ark is complete . For many though this isn't the case. But really, running the story and our current pandemic in synchrony isn't terribly important because the pestilence in Camus' chronicle isn't really about a biological disease anyway.
It is as reasonable to represent one kind of imprisonment by ano...

...we must keep an endless watch on ourselves lest in a careless moment we breathe in somebody's face and fasten the infection on him. What's natural is the microbe. All the rest, health, integrity, purity (if you like), is a product of human will, of a vigilance that must never falter. The good man, the one who infects hardly anyone, is the one who has the fewest lapses of attention. And it ne...

Remember that Camus set out " to represent anything that really exists by that which exists not". Most, if not all of the major characters have names that convey a message. The name Panaloux for example, is a reference to Professor Pangloss in Voltaire's Candide. (which I haven't read). I expect that scholarly study would reveal many layers of meaning and philosophical theory. Camus was a card-...

I think it’s interesting to look at the similarities and differences between The worlds of Plague and Covid… The prisoners of plague can go to bars, restaurants and theatres… In the book and in the Covid world people fear one another… And in both worlds some do better than others.

Part 3 is different to most of the rest of the book. In a single chapter it provides a matter-of-fact description of horror, suffering and our capacity to normalise things that not so long ago would have been unthinkable. A capacity that at first, seems like one of humanity's triumphs..... but on closer inspection....? To prevent horror overload I’ve split it into three bits… here’s the second .

In June, the beloved leader of Scotland (where I live) announced that we were “not far away” from eliminating Covid. My continuing to read a gloomy book about arbitrary tyranny seemed to have lost some of its urgency. But, even though our dear leader often leaves pauses while she is uttering forth, so that we, her people can reflect on how she is………......................................……………………...

This is very weird. I've noticed there are words that you refuse to say for whatever reason. The first chapter says "Oran" multiple time and you either skip over the words completely or change it. This is just one example. You do it repeatedly and it's always the same words so you're doing it on purpose but Why?

Very good. A great service to we who enjoy listening. I also like the birdsong in the background. I thought it was here then realized I cannot hear the birds from where I listen.

You perfectly captured all of the characters, your reading is beautifully paced, and your voice never became droning or bored. I could listen to you reading anything. Thank you again!!
