Battle of the Canon 800's

With the newest wildlife lens from Canon about to be released, I thought now might be a good time to remind everyone that there are already pretty good 800mm equivalent lenses out there that can be used right now, and might actually be better options. But only time will tell until the 200-800 lens is released to the public and more reviews are available. Until then, check out this comparison of...

Yellowstone 2023

I went to Montana with nine other photographers to visit Yellowstone and the Grand Tetons for ten days. The equipment I used was the Canon EOS R7 camera body, and mostly just two lenses. The Canon RF 100-500 for any wildlife shots, and the Canon EF-S 10-18 (adapted) for any landscape shots. This is only a recap, there was entirely too much footage to include so I just pulled out the more intere...
Testing a Vintage 1950s Film Camera - Part Two

I was recently gifted a Yashica model C, twin lens reflex camera (TLR). I'm told that the last time it was used was 1976. So I ordered some film and loaded it into the camera. You can see how I load the camera with the film and prepare it for the first shots it will take in almost 40 years. I've sent the film away now to be developed so I'll add to this once that film comes back in for review. ...

Can I ask when using the sigma with the adapter does it affect the high speed continuous plus shutter speed of the camera?
No, I did not notice any slowing when using the adapter.
@@TBGTOMPHOTO when the high speed continuous icon is lit is green it means ur getting full speed when it's white it means you are not. If you could confirm that for me that would really help my decision when purchasing. Because I do intend on using it for some indoor sports and things like that.
@@Silverturky I no longer have the lens, but from what I remember it did show up green.
Computer generated voice is always jarring.
If you think that's bad, you should hear my real voice. LOL
wepoto gp-r7 is a better solution .
True, and I have one. But at the time of this video, that didn't exist yet.
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
I mean, I'm good just using Topaz...
Do you still like your R5? I have been thinking about the R6ii, but I had them side by side and the R5 just felt more (screen and eye cup display thingy) premium? I know the R6ii is newer and probably has an edge some where, but just wondering your thoughts.
I LOVE the R5. I have two of them. They are the best cameras I've ever used, by far. I also have the R6 mark II, but use it mostly for video work. I'm not a fan of the lower megapixels on the R6, but it does a decent job.
@@TBGTOMPHOTO thanks for the quick response! I appreciate it!
Dude! I think I saw you in Florida last month! Thanks for the info!
🤣
FYI, you can swap the lens hood from the Canon RF 24-70 lens to use on the Canon RF 135 lens, if you wanted something a bit smaller.
The FD 135mm f2 is nearer in aperture.
Cool. I don't have that lens so I didn't use it for this video.
Thanks for the review. I think I will get the Sigma as image quality seems the same and I can get one used for $700 vs anothe $1500 for the 135mm Canon RF. Shoot with a 200mm f/2 for a while and you wont' be comlaining about the weight anymore, lol. Also like the rear filter option with the EF to RF adapter. Why canon doesnt' put a slot in the hood for a polarizer to be rotated is frustrating
I've owned both. Used the Canon RF 135mm now for several months and I can tell you that it autofocuses faster, the colors are more in line with all the other RF L lenses, and the image stabilization comes in very handy in low light and slow shutter situations. But hey, it's your money, and if all you can afford is the Sigma then so be it.
I have a Canon 60D and wanted to up grade and I thought that the R7 would be a good up grade but have been disappointed with the holding of the camera as the R7 is much smaller and not comfortable to hold and even more disappointed that Canon does not make a Pistol Grip for this camera. I now wish I would of waited and looked at other option's.
With the extension grip I am completely in love with the R7. You didn't find the night-and-day faster frames per second a benefit? I've used the 60D and it seems like a dinosaur by comparison. The 60D is horrid in low light, only 3fps, and you don't get the enormous benefit of an electronic viewfinder with a FAR superior autofocus system in the R7.
@@TBGTOMPHOTO You are talking to a dinosaur when it comes to cameras, get ready but I only shoot on AF and with my 60D and it was nice to handle and I was happy with the pictures I took on AF mode. I just wanted a up grade and get a new camera. I am going to order the Pistol Grip that you suggested. Thanks for you input.
hello I am searching for a guest for my livestream show would you be interested ?111111111
0:42 background song?
That's just one of the dozens of clocks we have hanging around the house.
For me, an advantage of the Sigma is that I can use it with my drop-in filters (way more convenient than adjusting the polarizer at the front). For me, IBIS and AF work very well with the Sigma. (And I can put it on one of my EF cameras, too!) Another big advantage of the Sigma, as you see, is that you can go to a store or order online and get one today or tomorrow!
There are sensor facing filters that can be used in the Canon R5, which would work for any lens.
@@TBGTOMPHOTO But I mainly use this for adjustable polarizers, and there are no polarizing clip-in filters. (And, of course, with it being external, you can adjust it right by the lens mount, which is very convenient. The same principle applies for adjusting ND, e.g., while shooting video.)
@@856pm5Oh wow, you're using the 135mm for landscape? I use mine for portraits and weddings. I prefer wider lenses for landscape.
Sometimes, yes. But I've also used a polarizer w outdoor portraits. (also I use the same filters with all my EF lenses now which is pretty handy in general, esp w how small the filter adapter is vs. carrying front filters esp of different sizes.) @@TBGTOMPHOTO
Also, I had the Sigma 135 before Canon announced their RF 135, and for me, though the RF 135 is definitely a great lens (I'm a fan of their 85/1.2 too) it doesn't strike me as a huge leap from the already very good sigma @@TBGTOMPHOTO
it's funny that I found this post because I'm going through the same issue right now. My solution was a bit different but it allows me to use the original Canon hood. I noticed that if I use both a UV filter and a VND, stacked, I can retain the hood on the lens because the VND filter sits proud enough to not interfere with the hood. But who wants 3 pieces of glass stacked, right? I figured out that I could unscrew the retaining ring on the K&F UV filter and remove the glass, using a compass (the drawing kind). Essentially creating an 77mm to 77mm adapter, which acts as a spacer to push the VND out far enough to not interfere with the lens hood. I keep the hood on my lenses 100% of the time and just don't ever us lens caps ever because with the hood on, nothing can touch the front element (except RF14-35mm which has a super short hood) whilst in my camera bag.
Useless in my opinion. Wait for a company to properly design a grip or just buy the next model with support for grips.
Good thing nobody asked for your opinion. I use this grip all the time and it works fantastically for larger sized hands such as mine. I don't need a spare battery in the grip, I only need the extension.
Very to the point..Great.
Bought one, its great for the price and quick delivery as added value.
Question on the auto-focus, specifically the Sevro AF mode. When I got my R6, I had to sell my Sigma 85mm because the autofocus was atrocious compared to even the cheapo native RF kit lenses. With the Sigma lens, the eye/animal tracking AF would just constantly hunt and pulse back and forth on the subject even when the subject wasn't moving at all. It annoyed the crap out of me because there was a 50% chance that the photo was either front of back focused by a tiny bit, making it unusable. In One-Shot, the Sigma was sharp, but who uses One-Shot nowadays? Does your 135mm also exabit similar pulsing behaviors in Servo? The native RF lens would lock on and not refocus unless the subject moved. I want to get a 135mm, but don't know if I should go EF f/2 or give Sigma another try. The native RF 135 is a just too much for me right now, especially since I spent nearly 7k on native 24-70/70-200/85 RF lenses.
I've had issues with Sigma lenses in the past as well... but for some reason, the Sigma 135mm lens does not have that focus issue that you mention with the 85mm. With the RF adapter, the lens is quick and reliable, which is why I use it at weddings. My RF 135 is still on backorder, I'm sorry to say (as of 7/21/2023), going on several months now, with no information in sight. Hopefully I'll have it by the end of the year.
I have the same issue with my Sigma 50 mm 1.4 on a R6 II when using the servo-modus so I use the one-shot-modus when the objekt is not moving. I have set one-shot on the af-backbutton and servo on the top trigger to be able to switch quickly.
Ended up buying a R6 mk2 and grip
How's that going? I have been looking at that camera for video work. Any overheating issues that you've found?
@@TBGTOMPHOTO it's absolutely amazing compared to my old 7dmk2. Not used the video yet so I can't comment on the over heating issue if there is any
What you have here it's kind of an alternative to a vertical grip for a Canon EOS R 7 but the problem is it doesn't have a shutter button for the vertical position this is what so many other photographers are looking for is a true vertical grip .
Correct. And for me, personally, that's fine. I just wanted something to fit my gorilla paws onto without my fingers dangling, and this solves that for me.
I'm really hoping that Canon puts out a mark II of the R7 that includes a battery grip and a faster sensor to reduce rolling shutter. I love the R7, but improvements can surely be made.
Not sure they have ever, or will ever, make the perfect camera at the perfect price. The more I shoot the R7 the more I like it. I consider this camera the right size and weight for a "carry around" camera. Great for taking a walk, going for a hike. As such, I don't think I would put a vertical battery grip on it if one were available. It would just add weight and bulk that I try and minimalize when hiking. I have been using electronic shutter a lot and haven't noticed much rolling shutter except when panning a fast moving object. The only other thing would be that it takes a second or two, or three to "wake up" after it shuts itself down. The screen comes on, but info on the screen takes a bit longer. If you shoot too fast, before the info comes up, the camera can do some wonky things, like suddenly tell you the card with 1500 images on it is empty, or can't read the images! Scary! Even though they did show up on the computer.
I found that with this filter if you went past max vienetting was very severe.
How did you manage to go past "max" when there are hard stops? I've never had any issues with my copy of this filter.
There were no stops on my filter it would fully rotate @@TBGTOMPHOTO
Good stuff! Well done!
Thanks for your efforts. I do wish you had blown the dust off the photo before starting, as that ruins our ability to really see the noise in the image itself. This kind of testing is not easy at all, though, so bravo for even trying. I do own both cameras and lens, so I'm very interested this comparison. Personally, just based on use, I find the r5 images cleaner.
With my eyesight, I didn't even see the dust until looking at the photos.
@@TBGTOMPHOTO :)
God, I would hope the R5 images are cleaner!! It is more than twice the price, plus is full frame!
goood ❤❤ sempel and perfashonal
Amazing to see how similar the cameras perform, definitely helps combat the perception that things like megapixels or sensor mean all that much. Photography really does just come down to a good eye and some good glass.
i bought a k&f lens cap designed for their vnd filters. works great. i like this too.
I also ended up getting a lens cap for the front of the metal hood. Love it.
I have been using this on my R7 for a couple of months. I'm starting to notice that the right side where the latch is, is starting to easily bend when I hold my camera. I think it's because that area is thinner and isn't reinforced with metal. I might have to request a warranty fix if it gets worse because it wasn't like that at first.
I've only noticed minor movement on mine in that area. Hopefully they can resolve that for you.
Where do you put the batteries and what does it take?
HA, there are no batteries with this camera... this is all done with springs and gears.
No batteries, and it takes film.
This is very handy comment and I want to thank you for the research, testing and video of this product. I shall look it up and order one, trust they use FedEx as then it will not be long before I receive it in South Africa.
Thanks for this interesting video. I shoot with the r7 and have the 100-500mm lens and your findings without extenders support my feeling that I have regarding the combination. I was disappointed not to see test shots with the 100-500 mm lens with the 1.4 extender as I feel it could be a valuable addition to my setup. If perchance you do have such test shots I would request that you post the with comparative shot of the lens alone and with the 2x extender and your thoughts.
I'm going to be using that exact combination... the R7 with the RF 100-500 and the RF 1.4x TC while in Montana in a few weeks. I will have a new video on how that works out shortly after I return from that trip.
I look forward to your video, now that I am subscribed to your channel I should receive the notification. I am aware that to fit the extender the lens needs to be zoomed to 300mm, this I do not consider a problem as my reason for its use would be to shoot small birds so will not use the lens at less than 300mm. Only thing holding me back is for a review of use of the 1.4 extender and the 100-300mm lens. Thanks.
@@kirkwest3721 You are correct about the 300mm. For that reason I won't have it attached to the lens during travel, I'll assemble that as needed on location. I also purchased a different collar for the RF 100-500 lens that includes a built in arca swiss plate, so that will be easier to mount to my Wimberly gimbal for monopod/tripod shooting (when I'm tired of hand holding).
@@TBGTOMPHOTO I did not realise one can purchase a third party collar and footplate, I already have extra footplates which I can attach to the lens collar and were immediately fixed to the collar footplate when I received the lens, so I could use it on my gimbal. The way you propose to use the extender is exactly how I would want to use it. Looking forward to your comments even more now as it appears we are at least on the same page!
@@kirkwest3721 I'll be sure to snap photos of the complete setup here in my home office before I head off to Montana to use it in the field. I'll also add a link to the Wimberly gimbal head in the description shortly.
Not smart to leave the R5 at home. Bring both bodies.
No... my R5s are for professional work. My R7 is for fun. This isn't a paid job, so it will get the enthusiast body. The R7 has been much more than adequate on my wildlife shoots, and being a full frame equivalent of nearly 80 megapixels, is more than ample.
@@TBGTOMPHOTO even if you don't use the R5, its always smart to have a backup with you.
@@Chris_Wolfgram don't like the R5? I love both of my R5 bodies. I just wanted to keep the weight down on my carry on bag. However, if I were doing the trip all over again I would have put my RF 15-35 on my R5 and my RF 100-500 on my R7 and used each of those cameras for either landscape or wildlife instead of swapping lenses on the R7.
Hi were did you get that bottom extender. The body for me is just to small
Please see the description of the video, you will find the URL to the manufacturer.
Just realized I didn't put the URL on this video, I had put it on another video... but you can see the URL in the description now.
I haven’t bothered with the update given the very “yawn” response the community has given the high res inclusion. In real world usage, considering the need for a tripod and a scene with nothing moving the number of users of this feature seems small. Have you compared an edited raw against the same image in high res ? Cheers from NZ
Yes, and to be perfectly honest, the Hi Res images look a bit "soft" to me compared to a raw upscale.
it's not possible to use it with flash? I wanted to use it to do some 400mp focus bracketing of still subject with a big flash and diffuser
I'm not sure if that's possible as it takes the images very quickly and in electronic shutter mode only... but give it a try and see what happens.
the d1 is obsolete
No... you're kidding. What gave you that impression?
I dont know why it has to be that big? Well it has IS so….
@@TBGTOMPHOTO i'm not talking about the hood though
why are you talking about the Sigma not being stabilized? It is stabilized by the IBIS of the R5 which works extremely well. The stabilizer of the RF lens might be a tad better, but that's probably not worth the price difference. The Sigma is already extremely sharp and works very well on the R5. I can only recommend the combo.
It's good enough... I own the Sigma, and I have the RF 135 on backorder. The moment the RF version arrives I'm dumping the Sigma. If you get an opportunity to use them side by side, like I have, you'll change your mind on the Sigma.
@@TBGTOMPHOTOthen at the same time, I could get three Sigmas for one Canon😅
@@Dewabarasunderan of course you could... and I don't knock the Sigma lens, obviously it's the 135mm in my bag currently... my own RF 135 is still on backorder. I get amazing photos with it! Bottom line they are both great lenses. I just find that using native lenses on a camera typically works out best.
If you turn it on, there is a little square logo under the shots counter on the top left. And the number of available shots drops to a smaller number because of the increased file size. Turning off the camera turns off IBIS High Resolution Shot.
Where is the link?

Uao, very good test, you help users to see what a difference. So DxO Pure Raw that I use as a demo ist the best software for my R5. Well done 🙂
