You can use gloves if you feel more comfortable. I have found, doing many collections, that gloves are more of an irritant to the stud than a help, in the process. If you wash your hands well, prior to collection, it should not cause issue. I have had 5 successfully AI pregnancies, personally, doing it this way. My opinion is, the less stress you are able to cause to the stud or the bitch, the more cooperative they will be, and the greater your rate of success. This is the same reason I mention using the larger silky bags for collecting the male. They do not irritate his penis as much as the regular vinyl bags.

​​​@@SLEV7NELEV11N The issue with some males is that the prepuce (sheath) may fold inward on itself as the stud's erection is subsiding, which can cause them pain and may cause damage to the head of the penis if it is exposed to air for too long. The simplest solution is to use a water-based lubricant and put a little on the end of the penis and gently massage the end of the prepuce to help pull it back over the stud's penis. In the rare event that the dog's bulbus glandis will not shrink (30 mins or more post-collection), you can use cold sugar water or honey and apply directly to the shaft of the penis to help the erection subside.

Exactly, thats why its such a good idea to test shipped or chilled samples, they should regain most of their motility, but in some cases it can be significantly decreases and lead to a missed breeding. Happy breeding!
