Tropical Low Tech Mushroom Cultivation | Italian Oyster on Cane Grass and Woodchips. Big Island
Aloha and Welcome back to another Low-Tech, Zero Waste, Oyster Mushroom Grow. This time we are growing the Phoenix or "Italian" Oyster Mushroom variety on different substrates from the land. We experimented using Cane Grasses and Woodchips as well as using our favorite Cold Pasteurization Method with Wood Ash. Growing oyster mushrooms is really easy once you have figured out a few things and living on the wet parts of Hawaii makes for a perfect climate most of the year. There is no fancy sterilization needed!

Wild Hawaiian Oyster Mushroom - Hawaii Edible Mushroom Foraging | Big Island 2024
Просмотров 1495 месяцев назад
This is the variety of Oyster Mushroom that grows wild here in Hawaii. Pleurotus Cystidiosus, it is wide spread and highly edible. While being common, it is uncommon to find large numbers of them and they often fruit erratically making them hard to "hunt." This was found on dead wood on a living ohia tree, also commonly found on guava and others in Waipio and Hamakua. Please be safe and malama ...

Awesome! Those shrooms look amazing!! TY for sharing!💓
@@mapuanakupuna3471 Mahalo!!! This video is from last summer. We've been growing Elm and King Pearl oyster varieties lately
Great video and success. I wonder how much woodash does one use for the pasteurization process?
@monikabingen4482 we used about 4 cups for a trash can. At this point, pretty sure it would work with very little effort. Oysters are super aggressive and depending on the strain, very forgiving to contamination.
We must be neighbors cause im at 900ft on the east side of the Big Island. Looking far to this working🙏🏼 thanks for the info. I will give a follow. Wishing you prosperity and motivation and Aloha 🤙🏽

What oyster mushroom spawn did you use? I have grown a few different types of oysters in straw & coffee grounds. I used sterilized straw & grew in buckets (coffee grounds too) but I tried growing them in straw bales & they fruited but then other spores contaminated the bales and took over. I had success with wood chips I hauled all the way from Kamuela to South Kona where I live, they did well & had a lot of shrooms but they ate up all the substrate & died off. I have lots of bananas so I think that would be a great option. Also where did you get the spawn from. I bought from Mushroom Mountain sawdust spawn & may try again. Aloha
@starfisher87 this video we used blue oyster sawdust spawn from far west fungi. Due to ag regulations it's become harder to order spawn online. We have luckily found a local source here in Ka'u. Our favorite oyster has been the king pearl. Mermaid mushrooms is in kona and she supposedly has spawn, but we have had disappointment in our interactions with her. Volcano mushrooms sells sterile kits that can be used as spawn. Either way great to hear your growing! All those substrates sound great, we recently have been doing cane grasses with great success. South kona, depending on elevation, should be prime spot for oysters!!!
go Koa!

Had no idea these grew on the island! Since I first learned of them, I’ve always been curious. Would love to try it one of these days. I wonder if any grow around Mountain View.
I’ve spotted shaggy in dry dirt an rock . After a rain . Kawaihae an last week kona
I see this in Hawaii
Did you ever see it or find it growing on a living tree? If yes, what type of living tree.
It can be growing on a dead branch that is still connected to a living tree..see this all the time on avos and guava. but it will not be growing on living wood
Aloha! I am living in Kona, and I was wondering is you have any suggestions of where can I find magic mushrooms? I tried Pu'u Wa'awa'a, but I couldn't find anything. Mahalo
Do Not Trespass. Pasture. Growing directly on aged cowpies, look for thick lumps of grass.
Sick! Thanks for sharing.
How do you process them in the kitchen without getting stung? Do you wear gloves there as well?
Yup! Unfortunately until they are boiled or cooked they are a pain to handle. I've heard some people "massaging" them in a bag before handling, but we recommend wearing protection until they are on heat.
Such a great video, man. This helped me so much. Mahalo nui! I
Yay!!!!
I just tried them for first time. Not bad mushrooms. I'm in SC too ☺️
Yes, you can cook them fresh or use them dried to bring that 🍁 flavor
Did you use banana leaves exclusively or did you supplement it with other stuff? That's really cool man, I live in a tropical country as well and this could be very useful.
We used only banana in this video. since we have settled on a mix of woodchips, coffee and banana
I thought it's mushroom hunter's etiquette to leave a couple to spread the spores around so the mushrooms have a way to reproduce?
Definitely is! These are some of the most abundant fall mushrooms of Northern California. There were plenty left behind!
I'm just a beginner picker, but you might want to go more in depth about how to differentiate from death caps, like the striations on the cap edge, hollow or pithy stem, etc.
Will do!
If you are a beginner picker just avoid these.
Do you need to wash it after soaking?
No just get it dry enough so that it doesn't drip.
@@ravilambmusic ok thanks bro I'll try it 🙂
Have fun guy!
NICE VID ...what part of the island .....im in H.A.?
We're in Kau around 2200'. I know of people who do well growing all kine stuff in the acres.
That corn looks pretty cool! I’m gonna have to truck dirt in where I live in Fern Forest before I can grow anything haha! The soil here is almost nonexistent, and what soil we have, doesn’t drain well😒
Yea soil is quite a commodity out here! I been working on taking rocks out of this bed for the last 2 years.

Great job man. This is fantastic. Thanks for sharing. I'm over in Maui and teach mushroom cultivation. We've been experimenting with different invasive species of trees, all log cultivation so far but we're wanting to incorporate more low-tech, off grid, bucket cultivation so this is perfect! Mahalo brah
We're super interested in using invasive species and log cultivation, the logs we tried all got covered in slugs so I think I might need to keep them under a dry space, it's so wet here. Any specific trees or mushroom strains you suggest trying out?? Mahalo!
Also we found mixing in woodchips 1:1 to help fruiting yields. Mainly guava and avo chips
@@wildsherbet7077 Hey, thanks for your reply. So far, we've had success with Shiitake on Eucalyptus, Oyster on Christmas Berry, and Shiitake on Grevillea robusta a.k.a. Silk Oak. We've also inoculated mango, guava, wattle, African tulip, gunpowder tree, and schefflera. We'll be trying your banana leaf method in our next class to show others how to do it except I think I'm going to boil the banana leaves in a metal trash can over a fire instead of cold pasteurization w/ wood ash. I'm still so stoked that you made this video and that it worked for you!!! Mahalo!
😳
วัาวๆๆ
Right on!
I too am living in Hawaii. I want to use banana leaves as well! Did you just put in a plastic bag tent?
We used the plastic draped over a ladder just as a wind block. Oysters like lots of fresh air.
@@wildsherbet7077 that's genius! I will try that too.

That is awesome! I live in Tuolumne County and recognize a lot of the places you guys went.
Awesome, good luck this season! So many burns to explore
Me too, howdy neighbor.
Thanks for the video! Do you do this exclusively with dead banana leaves? Where do you source your wood ash from?
Currently the mix I have been using is woodchip/banana/sawdust approx 40/40/20. I have found that the woodchips give it some extra life. we burn fires here pretty regularly so we just use ash from the firepit, hydrated lime also works if you are unable to burn.
