Grain Mill Comparison- Mockmill, NutriMill Classic, Vs. NutriMill Harvest
I've viewed Grammar Island on the Royal Fireworks Press site and watched many reviews. It seems like there is lots of reading about the parts of speech, sentence parts, phrases and clauses, but very little practice. According to the site, Practice Island is best used after finishing Grammar Island and Sentence Island. Do you think there is enough practice within the Grammar Island book for the concepts being taught? For instance, after reading about nouns or verbs, do they practice finding these parts in sentences?
@@thewordrules I’m sure it would be case by case, but for us it was enough bc I did it based on mastery. I did buy the practice book for later levels. I believe Michael Clay Thompson even said he added it just bc parents asked, not bc he thought it was needed. We used this level after a pretty rigorous grammar curriculum so it was a nice gentle approach.
Thank you for the video! Have you tried to crack any grains with this mill?
@@LesiaAungst I haven’t done that. What do you use them for?
@@ordinaryhomemaking6027 I am looking for a mill where I can mill grains into flour to make bread and crack grains to cook easily.
@@LesiaAungst the mockmill is probably what you want bc it has like 30 size settings. I wanted to do cracked corn for my chickens.
@@ordinaryhomemaking6027 Yes, I heard from someone else about the 30-size settings, but there are actually 10 settings written on the device. How would you set the device on the rest of the settings? Thank you!
@@LesiaAungst mockmill.us/support/ This has a couple of videos that explains it well.
With the classic Nutrimill, I thought you place the grain in before turning it on?? And, which mill grinds the finest?
@@lolam.9291 I will do a test soon but they are both very similar fineness. The new nutrimill you can add then turn on.
speed is not important to me as a fine grind
@@carolosborne126 that makes sense. I want fine and speed, mine is 100 is slower than the 200 but probably close to the Nurtimill classic for fine. For me to make two loaves it takes around 12 minutes to mill.
@@ordinaryhomemaking6027 I am going to get a mill for Christmas and have been back and forth. Do you think the Mockmill is a good decision? It’s more in line with what we want to spend.
@@carolosborne126 I love my mockmill.
Explain glazing and which one gives u the same consistency as store bought flour when milling rice?
@@Dojayou I will have to do a more recent test to show you exactly. But with the classic and the mockmill you get very fine flour. Glazing is when the stone gets a smooth coating over it. It then does not mill well because the grooves in the stones are filled in. You simply run rice through the machine to fix the probably. I have never had glazing with my Mockmill 100 and I think it is impossible to get glazing with the Nutrimill Classic because it has the stainless steel burrs.
I love it for my 3 year old. I don’t go in the order of the book and I intro the sound and letters together.
@@QuinonesFamily-rj4yx love that. Yes. If I was going to do it over and use it I would do sounds and letters and maybe even big and lower case letters together.
Very helpful video. Would love to see videos of other curriculums you do ...
I want to thank you for making this video. My 3rd son is half way through level 3 of AAR and my 4th son is on AAR 1. Both of them started on Level 1. I thought I would get a jump start and start my 5th son on the pre reading level. We just finished letter f and I was just plowing along and I know so well that it is ideal to teach letter sounds and not letter names initially. I am going to switch it up for him now, thank you!!
@@laceyhenry4617 best of luck!
Never put oil on the gasket. The instructions tell you to prime it with flour and it will close and seal easier. I also know why you got flour on your counter when you milled that bit of grain.
@@elizabethG633 Thanks. Flour would definitely be easier. When I made this video I did not have a users manual. I thought I read it somewhere. The manual says you can use flour, cornstarch, or non stick cooking spray. (Which I took for using a little oil on a paper towel) What’s your idea for the canister? I think I just didn’t slide it in far enough. I used it a couple of months then switch and just got it out for the video.
@@ordinaryhomemaking6027 to close the canister you have to shove it in and if it clicks and the 'yes' can be seen clearly and the canister does not move at all, it is connected right, I have to give mine a hefty shove to make it secure. But then I don't get flour everywhere. As for priming the gasket using the flour or cornstarch works the best for me.
By the way, I have 3 mills. The Nutrimill Harvest, the Classic and the manual Nutrimill Jr.
@@elizabethG633 what’s your favorite to use?
@@ordinaryhomemaking6027 I really like my Harvest, and use it all the time, the Classic I switch to if the Harvest needs to be cleaned, and it is a great machine too. I haven't used the Junior yet as I bought it in case we lose power long term. I also have the adapter for Junior so we can use it with a power drill, but so far our power has not gone out when I need to bake bread.
I looking for a new curriculum for my 5 year old. We finished The Good and the Beautiful preschool curriculum last year which he did well with, however, TGTB kindergarten seems way too advanced for him (I think because he just turned 5 in May). So now I'm looking at other curriculums which seem too easy for him, being that he already knows his upper and lower case letters and sounds. But I also don't feel like he's ready to jump into learning long and short vowels and 2-3 letter words all in the first week, which TGTB does. Would you have any suggestions in this case?
@@bricehagens7956 I use Ordinary parents guide and skip the letters sound section. It is slow and she recommends doing a lot of rereading. So you can go probably all of K before you introduce long vowels. We do a little of the Ecclectic Readers and hooked on phonics if he gets bored with OPGTR.
What grades would you recommend this level for?
@@allisonsmith7360 They say 6-7. I think 8 and up. Since it is a “gifted” curriculum maybe that is 6-7 gifted. But I definitely think if you start in level 1 some of it goes quickly and parts of it will start to go slower, so I think you just go at your kids pace. But with the books to read are more gruesome they are better for older.
Great video! I love learning about MCT.
Thank you so much for sharing!!

You should explain what “glazing” is
Glazing is when the is a build up or film over top of the stones. It makes them slick. They need to be rough in order to grind.

I never really feel that a program is complete for me so I always add my own spin. I taught my 4 year old the letter sounds before starting the program and used the pre reader program as a drill to remember the first sound I already taught her. The program is good for making learning the alphabet and sounds fun. So say I didnt teach her the sounds already ,I’d take maybe a week for each letter / lesson and drill the sounds with the letter. Repeatedly go over the poem and letter sound for a week for that letter . And it also is great for teaching your kids to rhyme. I also recommend adding a writing manuscript activity on the side. But I love the program it makes it fun to learn for the kids. I’m gonna reuse it for my 4 other kids so the price is also worth it to me .I taught my oldest daughter the alphabet and their first sounds in order also at like 4 and then she did horizons phonics for k-1st and is a very strong reader already in 2nd grade. So I’d recommend horizons too.
I was just wondering if you were planning on doing a MCT Level 4 video. I would definitely be in support of this. You did a great job reviewing Level 3. I feel like I have a much better idea of what's included with this level. Thank you!
Love this, can you link the hooked on phonics work book!! Love to get this. I have the alphabet printed out already lower and upper. And I’ll just read phonic books on what we are learning from Amazon with bob books, learning to read set an and b along with basic phonics and games. Handwriting we use d'nealian and math we use Abeka ( arithmetic 1 ) And Bible (: and just lots of read alouds!! My girl loves to be read to. And for fun we use Miacademy. RUclips we use ( read with Molly, brain tv 123, have fun teaching, phonics song, etc ) and we loveee learn bright for science videos! )
Thank you so much for this review. I was about to place an order and the placement test told me because my daughter doesn’t know how to rhyme and doesn’t know how to separate syllables that we need to be in the pre-reading program. I’m glad I found this video because I was about to make that purchase, but I kept second-guessing myself because I feel as if it will be too slow paced for my child learning all the letters Individually ( meaning upper and lower ) and in order… but going to level one seem to advance? So if my child knows letters by looking at them and their sound. But when asked what letter is heard without looking at the alphabet chart and when you ask her “ what letter in the beginning do you hear when you say PIG” she tell me she doesn’t know. So maybe pre reading will benefit us?? I jusy know my Child will lose her mind taking that long to go over all the letters again since she does know them and knows some of their sounds and will be frustrated when we go over the ones we know, but maybe I can just skip over the ones we know? My girl can only last 15min tops on a subject before getting wild and not being interested anymore. I feel as pre level with all about reading we will never get done but I do love the fact they go over it at a slower pace but idk if that is beneficial to my child if she knows some? So with that said, you mention for ordinary reading, the first lesson starts with “ At, am , an , add “ so does my child need to really “ read “ before this?! Bc my girl is 5 and she is NOT reading nor rhyming. I read aloud to her all the time with all different types of books, poems, rhyming, fairy books, bob book, phonics book, we also have learning dynamics learn to read set off amazon. So do you think my child needs to learn to read before starting ordinary reading? I do want to note we use Miacademy as for fun and they are teaching her to read level a ( beginner) and they are starting off with matching the same sound “ at, cat , that and my girl is picking it up so quickly and it has multiple choice questions they read to her as well as read the question to her that says “ what word sounds like , PIG” A: cat B: dig And she will legit say dig. But she can’t read yet. And can’t identity what sound letter is beginning or end letters. Will ordinary parent guide be beneficial for us do you think or maybe Abeka phonics? I’m just stumped on the three programs. Yours ( ordinary along with the work book from hooked on phonics seems like a great combo so I’m glad you found what is working best for your kiddo !! )
We are in the exact same boat. My son just turned 5 in May. He knows all of his letters and sounds, but he wasn't quite ready to read or rhyme. We used The Good and the Beautiful preschool program, but the kindergarten curriculum seems way too advanced. I've heard that Masterbooks is also very good, but it's difficult to know how to move forward when they are kind of in between these levels. And I don't know about using a book that's just black and white with no pics because my son's personality is that in which he would rather be outside doing stuff all day😏.
I hope you can share level 4 if you have time!! Love your videos, thanks 😊
Awe!! Thanks. I will try. We have not completed it yet, but I may be able to do a review at the end of this school year! Thanks you asking. It motivates me to do it :D
Can you share full recipe, please!
I have NutriMill Harvest i use it for 1 and half year and i use 1 kg of Whole wheat same time and it is well worked nothing happened!!! I clean and it is cleaned with brush as well. And nothing happened to stones. U use in form first try and happened like that ???? With me flour never pure inside the machine. That never happened to me it is clean and stones are same. I checked after your video again and it was clean both the machine and stones never glazed. Let me say this NutriMill Harvest have to fix the stones till you hear stones are start to touch together then you have to pure wheat. If u pure the wheat and fix the stones it happened as u showed. Hope this help
I plan on doing MCT for LA next year and I was looking at this for science. Do you think this science is more for older kids? He will be 9 and I didn't know if it would be better to wait another year. Also, now I'm intrigued by the literature comment for MCT. I feel like a lot of curriculum I like that is secular (MCT, MBTP) or christian (Sonlight) assigns too mature books for the age. My kid is an advance reader but im not willing to advance him emotionally when I know he isn't ready.
Yes, I get that. What level MCT were you starting? If you are doing the Science with him, it would probably be do able to do science. My son is 12 turning 13 and has done most all of this on his own, so I cannot speak on the level of difficulty for the books, I don't think it would be to emotionally mature. But I will definitely ask him he thoughts. So far I think he has enjoyed most of the books.
@@ordinaryhomemaking6027 I am reading the Island books (grammar, sentence, literature, and poetics) right now and giving mini quizzes orally for the rest of the year. I plan to go full town level next school year. I was trying to decide between BF history of science, Sonlight Science D, Berean Builders, or Beast Science 4 if its out. He is 9 so I didn't know if BF's would be better at an older age. He is pretty advanced with science. I like the layout of TGTB's unit science studies but he says they are too easy. He needs advanced concepts but not advanced writing essays if that makes sense.
MCT sounds good and the books in that set for reading aren't too emotionally old. Alice and Wonder Land and Wind and the Willows are so good. Peter Pan is good too but a little older. We read these all together instead of the student on their own. Science, sounds like you have lots of good options. I will say if you want experiments, these seem harder to do and we have not done most of them. The good thing about BF is that you can always do it now or later since it can be used for multiple grade levels. Older is probably better if you want him to do it more independently. But it might be better for 10-13. Also, something that you all can do together and do it slowly. There are a couple of essays so far. When my guy was 9, he would have not done them, but did fine on them now. Again you can skip those or wait till he is older. I'm not super familiar but if Sonlight is advanced enough that might be a good option. Looked book based and age appropriate experiments. @@ravenbird3014
At 17:04 you seem to change the burr regulation. You had already set the correct distance before pouring the grains. By re-tightening the space between the burrs, you are going to have the burrs touch each other, and that creates burr damage.
The stones are set inside so that cannot go too close. You can set the inside too tight. I have since changed how tight my stones are since this video. This was when I first got it. It will not go too close now. It can only go looser. On the Nutrimill Harvest they actually tell you to tighten when you add your berries.
@@ordinaryhomemaking6027 I see. It is my perception that the kernel themselves can actually keep the burrs apart - they will work against the inner springs pushing a burr against the other burr. But immediately before and immediately after the milling, when there are no kernels between the burrs, the burrs will touch each other if you hear a noise. That, personally, I would avoid.
@@uffa00001 With the mock mill you turn the adjustment knob to lock the ceramic discs in place so they don't get pushed apart.
@@elonever.2.071 Thanks for the clarification. So IMHO the discs should almost touch each other, but not really touch each other, ever.
@@uffa00001 The instructions say to bring the discs together until you just begin to hear the grinding noise. And then back it of when finished grinding. Personally I keep mine where they are almost touching and this makes fine enough flour for what I do. I hope this helps.
Can this mill pulverize cacao beans, or do you know of one that does?
I think you would need to use a blender or coffee grinder. Nothing with oil can go into the mills (nuts & seeds, and nothing that is not completely dried).
How has this been going for you? Is your son still enjoying it?
He says he still likes that it is flexible, but he didn't like having to do essays for it. After the first one he said it was much easier and he just decided to do it. He is currently 1/3 of the way through. It took a little in the beginning to make sure he understood and was completing things, but now he does it pretty independently. There are more experiments than I thought, so lots of experiments is good, but we have ended up skipped a lot of them. We don't have a lot of the items, so he makes a list in the back of his notebook with everything he has skipped and then when we can we will try to do some of them together. The notebook and skipping some of the experiments have allowed him to do mostly of it on his own. I do wish I was doing some of it with him, just because I am curious, but I am glad we have the books, bc my older child will probably read them at some point.
Is there a difference in the flour between the impact mill and the mockmill? Some have said the impact mill you showed is finer. But wasn't sure if it was a big difference? I have a wonder mill and am thinking of getting a Mockmill because it is a pain to clean every day
So I got my Nutrimill Classic back (the white one) and is not as fine as the mockmill. I thought they were so similar before and used the classic before I got my mockmill. However, after running flour through today it is much finer with the mockmill sadly. I love that you can mill so much wheat, faster with the classic, but it just isn’t as fine as the Mockmill.
I love my nutrimill classic! I suppose it’s a matter of preference, and need. Have to agree with you, their customer service is excellent! Happy baking!
So glad you enjoy your Nutrimill C. I think I could have worked with it and had good outcomes. However, I was worried I might have damaged my stones. Nutimill seems like a great company. Happy Baking to you too!! Have a great day.
Can you remill with the classic or is it not needed? Trying to research before making a purchase. But so far, I'm leaning towards the classic.
@@angelfoster9511 I’ve never had to remill, in all my years using this machine. I suppose one could if it were preferable, or needed. I’m sorry I wasn’t much help there. Perhaps you could drop company an email? They have always been quick to respond to all my questions in the past.
@sandriagutierrez2605 thank you so much. I saw another comment that the classic only worked to make fine flour for them...nothing else. I'm interested mainly in making baby cereal for my little one and then Secondly making flours. In your experience, Would this be good for baby cereal?
I totally agree that its more important to learn the letter sounds rather than letter names
We loved the pre reading level for when my child was in prek3. She was four at the time. It really gave her a solid foundation prior to being introduced to blends in K4. They have a scope and sequence in their website for parents who want to see exactly what will be taught.
That's great. I'm glad it worked for you.
I love it too, it’s really helping my 4 year old understand rhyming
that mixer is brave taking on 6 cups of flour
😂 Yes it is.
This was more helpful than I realised. I love All About Reading but perhaps this is a not one level I need to invest in when my youngest gets there
So glad it was helpful. I wished I would have seen a video like this before I bought it. (I did buy it used though.) I do really like what I have seen of AAR levels 1 and up. I have friends that use it and love it. We use All About Spelling and I like the first like 5 levels. But yes, I was disappointed with the Pre Reading. I have heard AAR 1 assumes they have a bit under their belt, so if your kiddo already knows letter sounds and you wanted to use PreReading for a review and play the games to learn the skills like rhyming and segmenting, etc., then that would be a good use of it. IF you could find it used at a good price. Have you used AAR level 1 before? If so did you teach or use anything before it to get them ready?
Which mill would you say does a better job of grinding the wheat berries at a finer consistency?
I would have to experiment a little with the Classic and Mockmill to see. If I do I will let you know. If you only want fine then the Classic would be better for the price. Where as Mockmill will do fine up to many different coarse settings. But I do feel like the Mockmill and classic are both the same fine wise and you have to make sure you just barely turn the classic knob to keep it at the finest.
The All About Reading program is fantastic for levels 1-4. The pre readong level does not compare at all. We used Explode the Code Primer and then went into All About Reading level 1
I would love to see the inside of this level. I’m curious how different the vocabulary and grammar is than the first two levels.
Vocabulary is at 23:10 into the video. Grammar (Caesar's English II is very similar to C.E. I) is looked at video mark 26:05.
Also, I see in my notification that you may have commented a question about if you need the grammar teacher's book. I cannot find it on here to reply. And sorry it has been 9 days since you asked. I just had a baby and have not been on here. I believe I recommend teacher and student book for level 3 because they will have pages to do and it makes it easier. Of course with any of them you could potentially get around it if you write out their stuff, type it up and print it, or do it orally. I did do it without the student book, so you can get around it, but know you will have to do a little work. I do think once you get to 4 though you will want the student and teacher book.
Yeah I deleted it because it the girl I bought the teacher manual from just threw in the student guide for free anyway. So it didn’t matter anymore. Thank you!
Well, that is awesome!! @@sarahmogus9464

I will try to do it soon. I like to do most of the level before we review it, but I might do it soon. Definitely before the school year is over for people who want to buy next year's curriculum. Do you typically buy curriculum toward the end of the school year, over the summer, or Jan. I tend to be a NEW Year as in Jan. person. Not sure why. Maybe I'm the only one.
I typically start planning now actually (started in September). I don’t have much time to plan things out in one sitting so I get like 10-20 minutes at a time. (My husband works a lot of hours). So I have to start now for all subjects and kids.
Oh wow that's like as soon as school starts. I typically wait till Jan I guess bc I want to see how this year is going before I buy for next year. That way I see if they need more help in an area or we need to change something, ect. @@sarahmogus9464
Yeah, for some of the things I don’t know about yet, I wait and then focus on the things I do believe we are heading towards. If it changes, then it changes. And it has lol. But I’m also a crazy OCD type A+++++ person (I emphasize the plus since I’m off my rocker 😂).
@@sarahmogus9464 🤣That's great!! too funny
I’d love to see your review on Ordinary Parents guide to reading
I will have to do that next. Thanks for asking. Anything particular you are curious about or want to see?
I just got the mockmill 200 professional and it comes out not nearly as fine as my burr mill. And it overheats the flour to 125 degrees. Did you send back a mockmill? I wonder if there’s a restocking fee because I tested (Used) it…
I did not send a mockmill back and waited months for mine. I sent back the Nutrimill Harvest. Maybe the 200 heats it more because it is faster? My 100 is warm but not hot. The Nutrimill Classic and Mockmill 100 feel very comparable to me. I would love the 200 bc it is faster, but maybe it's good I have the slow one.
@@ordinaryhomemaking6027 I did everything I could to love that mill, but along with not being able to get the grind, I wanted and the heat it was generating, come to find out the stones are made out of a aluminum oxide. They say it’s food, safe, and medical grade and what not but aluminum is aluminum to me. I hated to do it but I sent it back.
That makes sense! What new meal did you decide on? @@benjamindrew9232
For now I got another nutrimill classic. I’m starting a cottage small business baking and milling for people locally and needed an extra mill for gluten free grains. I have the Grain Maker 99 with a motor kit and two nutrimills. If the demand is there we may get a Meadows commercial mill that has an 8 inch granite stone. If you’re not worried about the material of the stones in your current mill, I would stick with it and have a nutrimill as a sidekick for bigger jobs. Just my thoughts.
Hi I'm a new subscriber. This was very helpful! Thank you for sharing! I would like to try making it myself soon hopefully. Blessings! 🙏☺️
Thank you so much for your comment. I love helping and hearing from others. Best of luck!
Great video! Practical and informative.
Thank you!
This was very helpful, thankyou!
I have a Nutrimill and love it, I use it every wk to Make 3 loaves of bread a week.
Awesome. Do you have the classic or harvest? We use ours so much too. Almost daily. We do 2-4 loaves a week, depending on the week. So thankful for mills and access to living wheat!

I heard an interview with MCT once and he said Essay Voyage is designed for teacher to skip many things in the book. Tailor it to give your child what he or she needs.
That makes sense, thanks for sharing. We definitely do not do it all.
Hello! Im looking at getting this MCT voyage set for my rising 6th, it will be our first time using. Do you need the teachers manuals for the lit set? My son also struggles to write and I'm planning to do EIW for that portion. I think the videos for IEW will just be too long for him 😅 So was thinking I'd just not get the essay portion for MCT..is that possible, like we wont be missing anything between the set if we do?! Sorry, if that question doesn't make sense. I was also looking at BF history of science, but we are doing NG from adam to us for history and Im thinking we might be biting off more than we can chew with reading 😂
That does sound like a lot of reading. Depending on how independent he is, he could do some of his reading at bed time or free time during the day. That means we miss out on some of the stories though, which sometimes I miss. :D I've heard good things about NG, but not familiar with it. Would love to hear what you all think. So 1) You can totally skip the essay portion from MCT. 2) I do think the teachers book adds to the lit portion, but you can totally do it without. It might honestly be cheaper to buy the homeschool packet and then just sell the essay part. I would check your numbers and see. 3) My 6th grader did the IEW videos we just broke them up into 2 days. But if you do not want him to do it independently, I have heard great things about the nonvideo lessons, like the Narnia writing portion. I prefer MCT grammar to IEWs grammar, but that may just be me. 4) So yeah, sounds like a lot of reading. Not sure if you are open to breaking things up like doing NG for the first half of the year and BF the second. Or doing it all and letting BF take two school years. Or even a 3 month rotation. Lots of flexibility. I do love that with MCT you do not do all of it all year long. Take a month to finish one and move one to another or even do like poetry as Saturday reading or summer reading together.
This does not work b/c in phonics you teach the letter SOUNDS first and you do not teach them in order. Also, any text or stories they read should ONLY contain the sounds they have learned. I made this mistake with my oldest and now we are struggling to get him caught up. Thanks for the review as you saved me from making the mistake of buying this for my little one!
Yes, I agree. So glad I could help. Best of luck!
Loved this in depth review! Thank you for sharing. This totally seems up my soon to be 6th graders alley. I definitely would have him do it independent as well. He rather him read the info himself than me be involved haha. Thanks for mentioning that the guide is faith based. We are believers but homeschool through a charter school so we wouldn’t be able to purchase the guide through them but we could totally get the books from our funding. I hope it goes well the remainder of the year! 😊
Thanks!! I love them working independently but hate missing out on the stories. :D I love homeschooling for lots of reasons, but one of them is bc I learn so much! So gald you can get books through your charter school that is awesome. We cannot do that. I actually heard someone else mention that faith based things, so thought well, I better share that too bc it may matter to some people. Does it matter if there are verses in side or just if it is faith based? I want to look back now and see what is in it "faith" wise.
Thankyou for this video. I have been quite busy lately and haven't made sour dough bread yet and this video was very detailed and gives me the confidence to try it. My schedule will slow down in a couple weeks so I am looking forward to making fresh bread again.
So glad! Thanks for sharing. Best of luck.
