However, these are just the frosting, not the cake. BRAVO ! I could come to listen and to see the concert tonight at the church la Madeleine (16.06.2024) It was the first time i came to that kind of concert, I found it very interesting ! You were so involved by the team and the music ! I was impressed by the singers (chorers ?) who look at you very often and understand what you want them to do, just in an glance... Amazing and great ! Thanks to you, to your wife too, to your team. I admired too your 2 children, they stayed so cool ! I was just sitted behind them.

Hi, I am an All Saints Church member. I have a lot of respect for Michal. I also thought the decision to cancel the concert was a bad one, for many of the reasons you both discussed. I think that it's an oversimplification , however, to say our Rector is an attention-seeking activist first. He cares deeply about our faith and this congregation. He made a mistake, but in our faith we can seek to do the work together to be restorative in our approach. Instead of looking for the easy solutions, our faith looks beyond the dualism of two sides and instead, calls us to be open to God bringing newness via Holy Spirit. I wonder about the motivations of those who brought this conflict into being but I do know at least one of them is sincere in their wanting this concert canceled. I don't agree with them but we had a loving conversation together anyway. I am unhappy about what this has done to the choir, whom we should have trusted to be able to sing the spirituals. They have done the work literally and racially. Our congregation has been on a journey to do the work and should have also been trusted to host and experience this great music. Somewhere in this we can grow as a community. Accountability (whatever that will be) will happen so that all of us, including Mike and Mark, can go forward to do the work of turning the human race into the human family. I'm grateful this conversation you two have had. I hope it leads to more conversations and does not lead to a hardening of hearts. We must model the way of Jesus in our relationships with each other. To do otherwise runs counter to what our faith stands for.

It's not that he put in more hours than anyone ever and that's why he was the best, and it's not that he was just born the best ever. He was born able to become the best ever if he put in a lot of practice. You need to question the motivation of someone who wants to believe that they would have been Mozart too if only they had enjoyed the same advantages.

I studied instrumental music (and composition & conducting) at UMKC in the mid-1970s. Among my most cherished influences was/is Dr. Ely, who invited me to join his Univ. Chorale for pieces needing my instrument, he inspired me only partly because he knew music inside-out. The intangible qualities he inspired in me and my peers remain strong influences. He was a doctorate-level educator who had nothing to prove, and he was so charismatic that he was THE most sought-after professor at the end of all of his classes/rehearsals I ever saw. His students truly loved him, and it’s no surprise to see that he also inspired you and this channel’s existence. I don’t recall Dr. E. getting into “music/choral philosophy” per se, still he was so interested in us and the end result of us “getting it” (as manifested in our public performances) that I truly admired his teaching style, and anyone could see and hear why he’s never lacked for work. He even let me audit his conducting classes without making it costly, awkward or complicated. A great teacher and person who has my eternal gratitude (like a few other Conservatory staff/faculty)! Ely’s on par with the late great Andre Previn (who also guest-conducted/taught us in Univ. orchestra then). Thanks for this interview. 👍

I'm a huge fan, but I think you're wrong about a lot here. way too generous an interpretation of critical theory. only one side is trying to do away with truth altogether. only one side wants to cancel the other side. only one side is interested in indoctrination. to present this as if it's just a loss of balance between two equally valid points of view, when one of those sides is clearly far more dangerous and insidious is disingenuous. also - too long for comment - but some of things you take as read, e.g., that disparities mean an inequality of opportunity are absolutely debatable. in the uk when we have reports on stuff like this that give nuanced data, the facts are always thrown out (guess by which side?) in favour of perpetuating perceived victimhood.

    • @Choralosophy

@@Choralosophy again i don't agree - people within the academy have been banging on about 'whiteness' and calling black conservatives 'white supremacists' or 'not politically black' i.e., 'coconut/eggplant' for decades - the racism is baked into this stuff at the theoretical level. there was one tiny part at the beginning of crt that was interesting and valid in pointing out the legal implications of intersections of identity in discrimination law - but this is a tiny tiny part of what crt is and has been for decades. it is, like all critical theory, essentially an anti-enlightenment movement, and re-racialising, and authority from identity is baked in at the ground level. to characterise is as just a bit of esoteric legal academia around discrimination law is either ignorance of what crt is, or just disingenuous. i suspect you have to pretend to be more impartial than you are for your audience.

I've only watched a small part of this so far but I will certainly enjoy the rest later. I first met David when he played the organ at my sister's wedding - at the age of 12, as I recall it. The usual church organist planned to sit with him and ensure that he knew how to pull the stops etc, but after five minutes he walked out of the church muttering "I'm wasting my time here", as young David revealed himself more than adequate for the task! David kindly asked me to record him playing at St John's, at Durham, and Westminster, and other places, and it was always a pleasure and a privilege. I last saw him a few years back when he was visiting Australia, where I now live, and he came to our house one afternoon and spent many hours with us to our considerable pleasure. I look forward to the next time! And I will always follow his career with the greatest of interest.

yes! i had a fun debate with my friends about how it's not solely about gender( because it’ll then risk running into essentialist stereotypes in away) but rather about power and how it can consume anyone striving for absolute control of it but even so if we do consider gender in here, its a great a commentary on why individuals like Lydia are able to thrive - by aligning themselves with patriarchal structures, and inadvertently creating greater challenges for others to succeed.
