Bike From The Brink
Добавлен 9 ноя 2006
My bike restoration channel - This channel is a video diary of me restoring motorcycles to their former glory, before they end up in a scrap yard.
I'm not a professional mechanic, nor video editor as you see is apparent in my videos.
I'm just doing what I can with what I have. Jobs that I don't know how to do, I'll read up on the Haynes manual and search the net.
Hopefully you'll enjoy the restorations and maybe my findings, triumphs and failings will help someone with their bike.

Sometimes you have to work with what you've got. I thought I had some clear pipe, which would have nade the task easier, but I got there in the end and didn't even set fire to anything :)

My 1986 Cortina P100 hasn't been driven over winter, the same as last year. However, last year, when the clutch was stuck, I put it in gear, pressed the clutch and turned the starter, that was enough to free it up. This spring it was rusted again but the same tactic didn't work.

Cortina P100 Exhaust Meets Tame Welder, That Will Do As It Is Booked In For a Full Stainless System
Sounds good 👍🏻
Up date. Someone has previously removed the switch from the handle bars and cut the wire at the pepcock solenoid. The pepcock is switched to on. How ever i am only getting 50 miles before running out of fuel. It only takes 6 litres to fill up. Even though it’s clearly run out of fuel. Looks like i need to remove the fuel tank to figure out what is going on. Can you tell me what the fuel pipe on the left hand side half way up the tank is used for? My trike is an 89 on a G plate. Also in the uk. Why would it only take 5 lires or so to fill up. It should be 13.5 litres as far as i know.
@Paulscnccreations depending on the version. All have 2 big pipes that run from the top to bottom tank, 20mm ish. Some have a pipe that passes through the bottom tank, about 6-7mm. I think it's a breather pipe, didn't seem to be of much use.
What year is this please? I have an 1989 trike. I don’t see a reserve tap on mine and the manual says it should have a switch just under the starter switch.
@Paulscnccreations this is an 89, F registered in UK. These things fail often, it might be that it failed and someone removed the tubes inside, or not, and it just uses all the tank or just to reserve point.
@@BikeFromTheBrink so i recieved the bike on friday i had no idea on how much fuel it had so i filled it up. It only took £6 which is less than 5 litres these day's.i did 60 miles on friday with no issues apart from the wheel bolt coming loose. I rode 10 miles on saturday before it cut out. I put 5 litres in it and it was full again. I then rode it home 10 miles. It’s supposed to take 13.5 litres. In your video it does show a tap on the end of the solenoid I think i’ll take the seats off and have a good look around. I do not have the electronic switch and i cannot find a pepcock. So i’ guess i’ll take the seats and covers off and see whats going on. Thanks for the reply.
You don't have the fake tank at the top do you?
@@BikeFromTheBrink i don’t think so as it actually holds fuel. The trike takes £6 in fuel to fill her up and i can get 50 miles before running out.
Interedted in the virago intake. for sale?
Hi, for 700-1100 size intake is £90 gbp plus postage. They work great on 38mm carb
Wow mine didn’t read anything
Time for a new one
Vinegar doesn't dissolve natural rubber, or synthetic rubber😎 Best to use the high strength vinegar, £20 for 20 litres, works much quicker. Put an old cycle chain in tank, then shake❤
Finally! A video that doesn't just say "use an air gun". Thank you!

Hello. Thanks a lot for the great and instructive videos. I am currently trying to renovate the fuel tanks for my wife's Virago 535 which has not run for a while. The issue is that the 2 orange pipes that are attached to the fuel cock are no longer there. I guess they felt into the tank. I may find them out when I clean-up the tank. Since they cannot be bought separately, and I don't have a 3D printer, do you think I can just ignore them, in case I can find them and cannot fix them back? Thanks in advance for your feedback. With my best regards,
If the tank rattles, they will be inside. Since making the video I've seen 2 options. Ebay Option 1: www.ebay.co.uk/itm/325999330867 Cheaper option Ebay 2: www.ebay.co.uk/itm/387356653058? On the 2nd one you can just use the pipes. You could ignore them if you have an inline fuel filter and reserve will no longer work.
Thanks a lot for the quick and helpful answer. I’ll certainly buy one of those. Best regards.
@@franckderouvroy2297 no worries, remeber to give me a follow :) I still have a 535 I'll be working on soon and posting videos
Nice one Ben!! I think those are the same ones I got for mine. So far so good. I have another week at work and hopefully I'll be able to get my last ride of the season in too. Cheers!
Hey mate great video again don’t know if you remember me I have the 535 and asked about the carbs a while ago. Having maybe a jetting issue. It’s a 535 with 107.5 main jets and straight piped. Having trouble with it can’t seem to get it fine tuned. Have bought other bigger main jets but not tried them yet. Also seems front cylinder running rich, rear is lean to normal but carbs are synced. If you need any other information let me know. Really want to get this bike sorted now lol. Thanks mate
It's hard to say, usually ends up trial and error. I would be tempted to post in a specific 535 group and see what people are using to get you a ball park starting point, then tweak it from there. This 1000 has 126 in both, which seems wrong, but it did run, I'll put it back together and see how it goes.
@@BikeFromTheBrink yeah something i learned recently that might help is different countries regulations can effect the way they make the bike, so in America I believe the main jets are 135 but on uk models or Europe models I believe it’s 107.5. Don’t know if the 135s would work in that. Might be the same for the 1000 that maybe it’s a different country.
thanks mate, i have a 1984 Volvo 240GL with one stuck piston in each of the calipers, i was quoted AUD$380 to rebuild each caliper, and my disability pension doesn't stretch that bloody far. i'll give you method a try sometime soon, tried several methods so far with other pistons that were stuck but still have the 4 being super stubborn.
Hope it works for you, keep me posted.
used this on my gas gas txt 125 AJP calipers, you are some man fella took some doing but they're budging. Cheers pal

@@BikeFromTheBrink Legend man. Dropped a sub
I take it the SE can't self park using park assist as some of the others do?
This one didn't have it. I've had it on other cars and not used it as it took too long.
If you want an f6c in your life, clear the space so you can get around it to work on. You'll probably find previous owners spent their entire budget on buying the bike whatever it is. I picked up a 25 year old Harley FXDL with 25k dry miles and 7 owners. It only ran on hot dry days because the first owner fitted an HD motor co fuel cap from efi non vented on a carb model. Took a few months to pin down but it's my third Harley since 1988 and hopefully the last bike I need. Planned another £3k when I looked at it,salesman didn't like it being called a 2 year project bike when it was described as excellent condition. I said we all have different standards and every bike is a project even if it's new. Good luck anyway. I declined a test ride because I wouldn't trust anyone else's work.
@theodavies8754 oh if I was getting a harley I'd make room to work on it too ;)
hi bruce woof
Excellent, the 750 carbs are same, I've left those extra hoses be, I'm running 85 XV750, no pump, I don't know why the -ve into the regulator though. the fuel hose should be underneath the fuel tank LHS, great vid!

@ianwilkinson4196 great work and thanks for the follow, another 2 and youtube start to pay me a little bit
I like how my pistons are solid with no hollow bits at all
Supposed to be like that or been put in backwards?
@@BikeFromTheBrink supposed to be like that. It's a BMW Brembo
@@ArcanePath360 maybe grease gun on a nipple screwed in the bleed. Messy and you need a grease gun but it should work.
@@BikeFromTheBrink I was going to leave it on the bike and use the brake lever to squeeze the pistons out, taking care to make them come out evenly, until it all falls into a bucket to catch the fluid which will likely go everywhere. This will work for the rear, but not sure how I will do the front, unless I do both calipers at the same time. Any pistons left in I hope to pull out with minimum force required as they should just be barely hanging on if extended all the way
If you have the luxury of it still connected up. I would go with that. Remove the caliper and gently pull the brake lever, when one is as far out as you dare, you can either chock it with something or G clamp it so the others move.
print the y-tube with tpu or tpe filament and suspend the carb with some brakets if the weight to high.

Thank you so much for this amazing tip and video. It made it possible to unstick my VW T25 from calipers with opposing pistons! Never would have got it without your help. Cheers from Detroit, Michigan USA
Tidy up the paint (brush job?) to original colour and put it back to standard. Set of steel wheels likely easy to source Surely worth a lot more that way too
@julianlangdon3456 if I was going to get it painted, I would have gone for original. But I didn't pay for the paint job, I do have £9600 of receipts for body work and paint though.
You think this would work on a Kawasaki EN500? It seems the right size, shape.
The principle would work, I'm sure. But it's not likely kawasaki made it the exact same dimensions as yamaha. I may be able to work with you getting one made to exact size.
Thanks for the tip mate. Spent about 3 hours on this problem yesterday. Removed today in 5 minutes with your method. Should have figured this out myself.

Holy crap. No your cells aren't 5200mAh. The best Samsung/Panasonic cells are 3300mAh. But you won't pull 30 amps out of those and run cordless tools. You want 2800 or 3000 tops. You need real cells rated for 30-40amps discharge. And then whatever capacity that is. Not this shit you're doing.
You're right, they turned out to be finest chinesium. They work on for 10 minutes whilst my good battery gets some juice. I've got some more cells from a bosch ebike battery which had a failed control board, I'm going to swap them when I next get curve and show off my new mini spot welder.
