Advice from someone with Schizoaffective Disorder: connect, connect, connect!
in my experience, Schizoaffective Disorder is an extreme form of denial in which you become so disconnected with yourself that you eventually disconnect from reality altogether because you are seeking connection so desperately while neglecting yourself entirely in the process. This disconnection from self is one of the main reasons I struggled to connect to others and ended up completely isolated, alone, and depressed. So: you have to make yourself a priority before you can help anyone else.

self-honesty, compassion, and accountability are key in the process towards healing. Your victim mentality might not be your fault at it's core, but as an adult it's your responsibility to address it. it's not an easy path but it's the most loving thing you can do for yourself and those you love.

My experience with the antipsychotic "Abilify" in treating my schizoaffective disorder

In this video I simply share my experience with my antipsychotic medication; the pros, the cons, what worked, what didn't... The medication I am talking about is called "Abilify" and can be found in pill form and in injectable form (Abilify Maintena). I also discuss the theme of spirituality, which can be a tricky area for people with schizoaffective disorder to come to terms with. And last but...

    What brought you back in your case? Therapy, talking to someone, or other things? I was just curious. But isn't the disorder always kind of lurking in the background, and you have to do the work to kind of keep it from derailing your mind and body?

    • @LiveWithIntentionCoaching
      @LiveWithIntentionCoaching 27 дней назад

      What great questions! Thank you so much for asking 🙏☺️ I would say that the first step in bringing me back was finding a sense of self... And that started with being honest and curious about myself... I consciously asked myself what my values were, what my needs were, what my likes and dislikes were.. I started to truly listen to myself and living in alignment with consciously-set boundaries... And yes, therapy, talking openly about my disorder to friends, a balanced nutrition, proper sleep, fresh air and sunlight are all crucial... To simplify... I learned to actively love and care for myself and take joy in doing so... But it started with baby steps.. it was very tedious at first.. until one day it wasn't... And I always advance cautiously with the awareness that another episode is a possibility... But I don't let the fear take over... Therapy has helped me immensely in learning how to regulate my emotions (with the right therapist for me) and regulate rather than try to eliminate fear... It takes consistent imperfect action and work but the results are undeniable and make all the efforts more than worthwhile! Hope this answers your questions! Thanks again for being curious ☺️🙏

    I was reading up on this and other similar disorders a few months ago and the past year or more, for my own research and knowledge as much as anything. For some reason I thought Schizoaffective Disorder didn't have characteristics of schizophrenia such as hallucinations or breaks with reality. I thought it was more like just the person withdraws from society, are loners, insular, etc. So this disorder is somewhere between bipolar and full on schizophrenia? I'm still confused. Isn't there also a disorder known as "Schizoid" disorder? Which is much different than schizophrenia? Nevermind, looked it up again, I meant Schizoid Personality Disorder, which I'd also read up on awhlle ago. Myself, I have a history of depression, panic attacks, anxiety disorder, and Asperger's, and a mood disorder (undefined somehow by a previous therapist). I was only diagnosed Asperger's in 2001 as an adult. I'm reasonably social and always was, gregarious, but sometimes I also like to withdraw, be alone, and do my own thing: I'm single, I love playing guitar on my own, reading, movies, even exercise I tend to do on my own thus far. Listening to music is more of a solitary thing for me. But then again I could put that down to Asperger's. I've never had a break with reality, but I have had a few past episodes of derealization/ depersonalization, I believe, that went hand in hand with a current panic or anxiety attack. That was disturbing, albeit brief.

    I think you're extremely self aware and the fact that you were able to make that decision to use the monthly shot vs the daily pill is a great thing! In my experience with Abilify, I was experiencing psychosis due to PTSD, drug use and sleep deprivation, and it was not amazing lol I was seeing my dead fiance being embalmed in the street and hearing my name being whispered from different directions. Went to the psych ward. The switched my antidepressant to Abilify, and like you, I couldn't take it every day. I just didn't like it. They talked about giving me the shot, so I started taking it daily as prescribed. After about a week it gave me progressively worse tardive dyskinesia and uncontrollable muscle movements in the face and hands- so awful!! So after ending up in the hospital and psych ward a few more times, and trying new meds, I had to accept that antipsychotics are not compatible with my brain. I had similar reactions with Latuda and Haldol so it is both first and second generation antipsychotics. Nothing against Abilify. My sister is bipolar and takes Abilify and it saved her life. You seem like you are doing amazingly. I love hearing your journey and advice, congratulations on your success❤

      Hi! Thank you so much for sharing your story 🙏 I empathize very strongly with what you've been through. And I am so sorry that Abilify is not an option for you. But don't give up! There are things you can do other than medication to practice self-care and minimize the risks of psychosis. You are already resilient for surviving what you've been through. And I wish you all the best in your healing journey 🙏🌻 and thanks again for sharing! The more open and honest we can be, the better we can be understood and the less stigma will be attached to this diagnosis. All the best to you ❤

      Hi! Thanks for commenting! I do take antipsychotics, and there have been side effects. Especially at the higher dosages. But now that I am at an appropriate dosage, almost all the side effects are completely gone. While there have been side effects to my medication, I'm pretty sure I wouldn't be here without them. I needed them to stabilize me and anchor myself in reality. Now that I have have been stabilized and have done the healing work alongside taking my medication, there is a plan to keep weaning me off the medication over the next few years until I am completely off them. But it takes time. Going off my meds all at once would be reckless. Permanent side effects are rare... I've seen the side effects go away as we progressively lowered my dosage.

    • @dv_vid
      @dv_vid 2 месяца назад

      @@LiveWithIntentionCoaching Permanent side effects are not that rare, actually, the risk of getting TD is 5% per year when taking antipsychotics. That's why on TV you see 'As you go with Austedo' and 'Ingrezza' . Very well recognized and admitted to.
