How I Wash Raw Fleece
Of all the things I do, this is the thing I get asked about the most. I've been washing my own fleece for years, and I'm FINALLY getting around to sharing my method with you all!
In this video I'm demonstrating on a raw Cotswold fleece from Priory Farms Cotswolds. This is a longwool fleece. My method is the same for fine and medium wool, with the exception of hotter water (depending on the lanolin level.)
Disclaimer: If you've watched my past videos, you know that low production quality, background noise, and "kid-teruptions" are the name of the game. If I tried to make these videos perfect, y'all would never get any of this info! I know most people don't care, but I DO have to say it beca...

Continuous Strand Bias Weave on a Triangle Loom (Tutorial)
Просмотров 4,2 тыс.4 года назад
Here is a detailed demonstration of the continuous strand bias weave method for a triangle loom. Though I am using bulky, textured art yarn I do my best to make these instructions useful for those who use more traditional yarn. If you have questions, or need help, please comment. A couple of things: -Sorry about the weird voice changes. I was switching between my computer and iPhone mic. -Yes, ...

Core Spinning Art Yarn Tutorial

    Hi, you have mentioned that icelandic yarn has 2 layers. One looks more felted, sort wool, and on the top of it, but look long wool. My question is, are you spinning both dort and long wool together? If yes, how to uou Separated them ?

    • @mymothersdaughter1896
      @mymothersdaughter1896 2 месяца назад

      Hi! Thanks for asking! I'm spinning with both layers in tact. I have separated them in the past, but found that lockspinning is easier with the shorter/softer layer to help grab the core yarn. The longer coat is slicker and coarser. When I did separate them, I did so with my wool combs. With the tips of the longer coat pointing the same direction, grab the locks and hold the longer coat tightly. Then run your wool comb through the shorter coat and it will pull the short/soft fibers right out. If you don't have wool combs, you can do it with your hands, just hold the longer end tight and use your fingertips to "comb" through the short/softer end and you'll see that it comes loose. It's just easier with combs.

    • @mymothersdaughter1896
      @mymothersdaughter1896 7 месяцев назад

      Hi! When I find brushed mohair cones or balls at thrift stores I snatch them up. That's what this is. You could use any brushed yarn you can find. The fuzziness of the brushed yarns helps grab and doesn't create extra bulk. I've found that core yarns should be thin so they can accommodate the extra twist.

    I always use Dawn and have never had trouble rinsing out. Maybe it has more to do with the amount used, or greasiness of the fleece being emulsified. Dawn is acceptable to use, available, and inexpensive compared to the name brands.

      So sorry I didn't answer your question! I let my kids use youtube, but make them turn off commenting. Sometimes they turn it off on my account! This is a 48" loom. Normally I would consider that too small to make a scarf, but the bias method adds stretch along the long side of the triangle and is perfect for scarves (the regular continuous strand method has no stretch.)

      Thank you! I knit all kinds of things with my art yarn. Mostly scarves, shawls, and simple sweaters. The key is to use big needles, (I use 50's and 70's) and simple patterns. That way the stitches are large and the yarn/contents can be show off, and the yarn doesn't get lost in the pattern. I wouldn't cable or anything like that, just super simple. :-)

      Hi! Thank you! That’s a great question! I should have mentioned it. Anytime I’m at a thrift store and find a cone of fuzzy yarn I grab it! Whether it’s mohair or synthetic doesn’t matter to me, I just need it to be on the thin side (lace weight-ish) so it can accommodate the extra twist. Hope that helps!!

    About how long would you say the pieces are? Have you found one length is better than another ?

    • @mymothersdaughter1896
      @mymothersdaughter1896 4 года назад

      In this video, they vary a lot. I typically prefer anything over a few inches. It can be done with smaller ones, but I like the look when they're longer. With shorter pieces (a few inches, as opposed to longer) you get a more spiral, controlled look. With longer pieces, I granny stack them more so it's super textured. (I hope that makes sense!)

      Oh my goodness! I NEVER saw your question! So sorry! I'm trying to help my daughter and was looking at my comment settings to see how to set hers up and saw this! If you still care, yes. You would grab the fiber after the twist. The further from the twist you grab it, the larger the slub will be. Careful not to grab further than a full staple length of the fiber, otherwise it will draft apart. Again, so sorry I didn't respond!

No rinsing in the machine! (I only made that mistake once!) :-) Then let it hang to dry. This is how I've always done it and never had a problem with things unraveling (not even core spuns.)
