My mom's first job was as a waitress at Wilder's. Vern, or Old Man Wilder as she called him, was a stickler for everything being perfect in the restaurant. The plates, silverware, etc were to be placed exactly right on the tables. He'd walk around checking out the set up tables and actually measuring to be sure they were perfect. The maraschino cherry halves were drained and pressed - carefully - so not a single drop of cherry juice would run down the dollop of whipped creme - made daily - onto the custard - also made daily. Otherwise, he'd send it back to the kitchen to have the whipped creme and cherry carefully removed so it could be redone. I loved eating there as a kid, and I never ate off the kid's menu. If he was there while we were having dinner, many times Mr. Wilder would take me by the hand and walk me to the bar to get a Shirley Temple and then take me back to our table. He was an excellent host and I have many fond memories of eating there and hanging out when Mom would stop in to get her check or something.

I grew up in Devil's Elbow and learned to swim on that little "beach" on the right side of the river just under the bridge. I'm now 77 and that sandbar was the same back in the '50s.

There is no way to didn't mention the Frisco railroad because the Frisco did play a big role in Steelville. I love going to steelville because of the railroad history

I recently had the misfortune of having major car troubles on I-55 in Scott County on my trip from Baton Rouge to St. Louis to finally experience my first Blues game in St. Louis. But, at least I had the fortune of it happening that close to Cape Girardeau. I am embarrassed to say that I had never heard of the city until that day, but I will never forget it. Everyone I met there - tow truck driver, hotel receptionist, and two different Uber drivers - turned what should have been a horrible experience into the beginning of one of the greatest weekends of my life. Because of these people, who are the face of a community to visitors, I will definitely return to Cape to see all it has to offer. Special thanks to Brandi from Candlewood Suites and Brooke who was my Uber driver from Cape to St. Louis. After a two hour trip, I was disappointed that the trip was over because the conversation was that good. Thanks to all that helped turn my lemons into lemonade!
