This is not true at all. I am a red seal electrician based out of Ontario, Canada, work for the IBEW and started non-union. I just got licesned. It's a 9000 hour apprenticeship and you must pass 3 blocks of trade school plus and Red Seal Exam. I have no idea how you thought you only had to work a few thousand hours. Just to add, years don't matter. Your level goes up every 1,800 hours. 0-1800 is first year, 1800-3600 2nd year etc... you pay is based on your hours. 1800 > 3600 > 5400 > 7200 > 9000.
