Selim Palmgren: Illusion Op.1 No.2 - Arthur Zachary Backwoods, piano
Просмотров 4,6 тыс.14 лет назад
Arthur Zachary Backwoods plays piano: charming Illusion Op.1 No.2 by the Finnish composer and pianist Selim Palmgren (1878-1951), sometimes called Chopin of the North. Charming alike is Stein am Rhein, a gemstone by the river Rhine in Switzerland.
I hear in this piece themes Sibelius used elsewhere, for instance the first motif is very alike the tune of his lovely advent carol. Opus 1, No2, Ask not Power nor Splendour. And I think the second is heard in the Belshazzar music. Anyway, it is lovely.
Beautifully played in a tranquil manner. The title of this piece is typical for Sibelius in his small character pieces, describing the characteristics of them. A good example is the well known "Etude" (Op. 76 No. 2), not at all being a virtuoso showmanship in the style of say Chopin, but a rather simple and small-scale single pattern based piece. Why in German, then? It seems to have been fancy and quite appropriate at that time to use foreign languages as titles. French was very common, but German worked as well in Finland these days.
This is already a quite old post, but I want to make some observations anyway. This simple, beautiful piece is very nicely and delicately played, and keeps despite the quite slow tempo the forward motion going. There is in this version repetitions (the eight first bars, and then again in the end) not written by Sibelius, which in my opinion breaks the overall architecture of the piece. That excluded this is a lovely version.
lovely🌺😴
Excellent rendition. The musical notation says Allegretto, but the tempo employed here is actually more suited to the feeling of the piece, where every note can be savored.
Thanks for playing this piece for me. The video is lovely and made with so much care. I enjoyed it a lot! Greetings from The Netherlands, Nicoline

I think I've just fallen in love. I'm from Spain, so sorry for my bad English and all the mistakes. I'm 15 and I play the piano at a conservatory. I don't have enough time to search about famous pianists and that kind of stuff so when I listened to one of your videos I simply thought you were famous. I've just realized that you're not, and I'm really shocked. Is this really happening? So... not so much more to say. In conclusion, I love your way of playing the piano, congratulations, and thank you so much for all these treasures in your videos. P.S.: Oh, God, the photos from your videos are yours too! I'm going to faint.
Excelente!
Music is ok, but there had to be Catalan pictures, not Swiss!
I discovered this video three days ago and now I look at it every day...I love that mazurka. You play it divinely
Thank you very much for your kind comment!

What a picturesque setting!
Nicely phrased and nicely voiced
It is beautiful :D thank you
I believe that is a C flat in measure 3, 0:26 sec into the piece. However its correct when the piece recaps at 1:22. Otherwise, nice!
Great playing, congratulations!!!
