Small business people who are the starting point of this Credit chain, need a reason why they should keep data. It has been proven that a Promise to get Credit even in next 3- 6 months is sufficient to motivate the small traders. That said the partnership between Suppliers and FSP need to see the Big picture that this process require a lot of education and upfront investment. The challenge is that FSPs, Organizations, talk Financial inclusion but run away when it comes to real inclusion like this case study. I agree on the need for a compelling value from the partnership, but without Big picture thinking, like the one I am talking about FSPs even suppliers will never come to this big party!
Another key thinking we see in many small traders which may be surprising is that the want what I call "Convenient Credit" not "Inconvenient credit". The challenge with FSPs is that they focus on the later making it challenging for merchants. Convenient Credit in merchant terms that credit that does not inconvenience me! (Doesn't Make me feel like I am loosing control of my shop I built bottom up; Gives it to me on my terms I take now, Sell, give you back your amount , I take my profit and give you back your amount; Less risk to me - more risk to you) This is a little example why supplier loans are preferred sometimes even at higher prices. Unfortunately Banks like inconvenient Credit (Give me documents - (KYC) Give me more papers of your small business; Show me cashflows "I want to ensure you are inconvenienced - Give me guarantee, I don't trust you will be here tomorrow; ) Merchants only come to these type of credit as a last resort, as suggested when the want growth This is a good discussion but require a mind set swift from the FSP!
Definitely the one on one contact is crucial to gain and retain trust. I do love the mix-approach to acquire customer. About the physical location as a trust point we have experienced that in Cameroon with our mobile money based microsaving assistant app.
