An update from Yorkshire and a song from Scargill chapel
Просмотров 48Месяц назад
Thought I’d let you know how I’m getting on after switching from IT to music as a job. And included an old song from John Michael Talbot. It’s recorded in Scargill chapel. Hadn’t sung here for a very long time. I used to be on community there. If you can, go to the Dales!

I finally got round to putting new strings on my oldest guitar. I needed to play something to get everything settled and thought of this. Thanks to the amazing Ralph McTell for the song. I sometimes drop in other city or town names as it’s such a universal and timeless story. Life can be tough. Make it better for someone else if you can.

      Good idea... a 'year later' update. I'll get a video out on that. But in short, the trem has been on a different guitar for quite a long time now. It was working fine on this one but I wanted to try it on my Epi Firebird which I use a lot for gigs. And it stayed there because I like it. So the JA 60 is back to stock and gets used mainly at jam sessions. It's light and its 'different' to what most people bring, both for looks and the sound. On the Firebird with stock tunomatic bridge and standard nut the trem works fine for me. No tuning issues with what I do with it.

    Thanks for posting this! I installed the same trem on a HB-35, and straight away ran into an issue - since the tremelo base is kinda floating above the guitar by 2mm (because the posts that you install into are not flash with the guitar), when I pressed it down too hard it seems to have maybe bend the posts forward a bit. Have you experience something like this?

    • @ColinLPrice
      @ColinLPrice 23 дня назад

      I didn’t have this problem (and still don’t) but I have only had it on a ‘slab’ type body where the screw/posts can be screwed tight against the body. That was on the HB JA 60 and now still fitted to the Epi Firebird. I also don’t press very hard on it to be honest. Just a little gentle bend sometimes. Did you fit it with the washers? I guess they might be needed on the curved body of the HB-35 ?

I haven’t replaced the speaker yet, so I use the “line out” jack to run it into the effects return of my Orange amp… it sounds GREAT 👍🏻 I plan to replace the speaker with a Jensen 5”, but I will also modify it to mute the speaker when the line out is used.

    • @ColinLPrice
      @ColinLPrice 2 месяца назад

      I think they both are in this price range. The JA60 feels considerably lighter, which may be good for a beginner. But if you want the LP look the SC-500 is hard to beat. If your budget is higher though, do check out the Epiphone 'inspired by Gibson' models or the Squier CV range. They are a lot more money I know, but you do get a better guitar. Don't forget to get as good an amp as you can get. So spend at least the same amount on the amp, that's giving you as much of your sound as the guitar, if not more...

    I wonder if changing the bridge the other way round would have helped the intonation screw issue. Meaning that the screws would then be facing backwards (bridge saddle pieces would need to be flipped). Maybe less pull for the screws/saddle pieces into that direction?

Neck is slightly misaligned, I don't like the sound of _that_ P90, the 6-saddle bridge would not suit me, prefer a traditional string-thru body with three intonated brass barrel saddles. It was a good guitar for sure. But just I’ve ordered a different model that I hope is the colour I wanted. Video to come on that one soon…

    Great vid! Maybe this is a stupid question, but If i where to buy a Thomann Jazzmaster DIY kit, would this tremolo also fit that guitar? I have a guitar build in mind that I really want to try my hands at. Having basically zero "luthier" experience this style of tremolo seems like the absolute perfect thing for me

      I've not seen that kit in real life yet but looking at the info on the Thomann site I think it would fit. It looks like the same parts are used. Bear in mind the trem on it's own is the same price as the guitar kit :-) Good luck with the project though!

      @@ColinLPrice Yeah that was I was thinking, they must be the same guitar right? Apart from the JA-60 actually being put together and painted etc. Is the JA-60 very poor quality or is it somewhat playable out of the box? I dont really have alot of experience with setups and stuff, but thats what I want to start learning on this kit!

      @@MikaelKonradsson My ready built guitar is very good quality for the money it cost. It plays good, sounds good, looks good, stays in tune, is light, what's not to like :-) I've not got one of the kits (yet...) partly because I know the paint job on the factory finished guitars is very good (I've got a few HB's). And I'd never get near that quality of finish myself. But just putting it together, getting the truss rod, string height and intonation shouldn't be that hard. The HB guitars I have don't have the same quality of hardware as my Epiphone guitars, but they were about 3 times the price.

    Hi Colin, I have just bought a second hand sunburst version. Just wondered what strings you use on yours? thanks

      Good decision! Congratulations :-) I usually put D'Addario phosphor bronze on my acoustics. Gauge .012 - .053 works well for me. If I saw another one in that sunburst finish I'd be tempted to get it as a backup.
