Why authenticity is the key to everything
Просмотров 4 тыс.6 месяцев назад
Content creation for artists can be so daunting - we often feel like we have to stick to ONE medium or ONE style of art to post online if we want to build an audience. I've come to believe that it's less about the exact art that you put out there, and more about how authentically you represent yourself. People, especially art collectors, want to understand the artist behind the art. People want...

How To Prep a Wood Panel for a New Painting I Acrylic & Oil Painting
I use social media for information only. I do have links to my Art work, and my Music Productions. I use my profile as a card. I add links, and what I do. Afterwards I just read posts, and answer them. I'm busy. I follow what I want to see. I also search for what I want to see. I don't have notifications on, because I want to read when I want to. I'm in control.
Biggest concern for artists using social media is THEFT and plagiarism. We've known a few gifted people who naively shared their work in order to generate interest and buyers. Only to see their ideas being copied all over social media. The takeaway is to first establish yourself away from social media. Then gradually use social media to advertise and nothing more. Thank you for this very honest and helpful flow.
Social Media was made to make you create a distorted image of yourself in your mind, wich you end up believing exist. It's fucking psychological terrorism!
2:11 yup setting this dumb phone down now to go play with my dog and chill instead of looking for motivation on RUclips. Good on you for making this cheers.
Complaining about social media, while being on social media.
"complaining about capitalism, while owning an iphone"
its almost like u can criticize the society u live in while living in society
I always dreamed of working with animals when i was younger but i am bad at the chemistry stuff so i applied for art school instead and got in. So now i am a graphic designer and artist which i of course also love. But my interest in animals never faded. I just draw them now instead of operating on them 😂
Haha that’s fair! I never did well in science and math throughout high school, but applying those things in a medical setting is so much more comprehensible to me for some reason.
I work at tech. But still create art and trying to do it on a daily basis. 😊
That’s great!
Thanks for the video! Very useful in these times!
Thank you for watching! Stoked you found it useful ✌️
Your content is amazing erin keep it coming 💪💪❤️ you are absolutely awesome 🌹🌹
Thank you!!
EPIC! Keep killing it
🙈 dude thank you!! Means a lot coming from you!
This video found me and it resonated with me. I started to challenge my overthinking and it’s so freeing!
That’s awesome! I’m so glad! It really is so freeing I totally agree.
I wish my creativity/recording room was even half as well put together as yours. mine has "i took the doors off my closet so i could fit an old organ i got for free in it, even though i rent" type energy. also i dig the spiders. i dont keep any of my own, but i am heavily emotionally invested in the lives of the spiders that live in my mailbox and windows.
I can totally relate to the emotional investment in your house spiders! I was worried that sharing my spider friends would polarize my channel a bit as I’m trying to grow but I’m also trying to be as true to me as I can be and they are super important to me!
@@erinisabellabee yeah theres a weird balance there. i think for fast growth you need to hyperspecialize. but a lot of people burn out that way. i welcome spider friends though.
𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐰𝐛𝐞𝐫𝐫𝐲 𝐟𝐥𝐚𝐯𝐨𝐫𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐫𝐨𝐰𝐢𝐞𝐬.😅
Haha exactly
Looks like a great place Erin, with a wonderful view (as far as I can tell, but I am guessing you can see some plants from your window?). I live in the city and really miss the trees they removed around my house a couple of years ago. Thanks for sharing. It's inspiring me to get rid of some stuff in my own art studio.
Thank you! I do have a decent view and lots of plants around. I feel more inspired to create in this space than I have anywhere else. I’m glad it’s inspiring you!
Inktrash, how can anybody ruin their body like that, tattoo´s are so off putting 🤢🤮
ciao! I really enjoyed the video, I'm watching several on this topic these days. since ig started changing (few years ago) I've had even more difficulty keeping up with my mental health. I was also convinced that I had to become a content creator but the reality is that I HATE Instagram and have no interest in sharing my whole life there… I will try to use the app only to share new works to keep the profile as a portfolio. although every time I publish, seeing that there is no engagement makes me sad and I would prefer not to have to use it anymore. I'm torn :/
I totally get that! To me, you can look at that two ways: - there is little engagement because the platform rewards consistency by showing your posts to more people, so the lack of engagement is not at all a reflection of your work! - if that still really bums you out, I say just don’t use it! There are soooo many artists that don’t use social media and still find success in galleries and art fairs. Do what maintains your mental health, otherwise your creativity will surely suffer! I will say this though - if you enjoy consuming RUclips content, you could always try your hand at creating on here. I find that this platform more than any others rewards authenticity - you can make content that is true to you and people will find it. It doesn’t even have to be high quality. Good luck on your endeavors! ❤️
When you gaze long into an abyss, the abyss will gaze back into you.
Absolutely!
I will never understand what this is supposed to mean, apart from literally an abyss 😂
so nice of youtube to reco me this gem in a time where I am so lost as a creative
I’m so glad this video found you, then! Welcome ❤️❤️
Holy shit that looks sick, you paint so nicely :0
Ahhhh thank you so much!
Well communicated Erin. Our tribe 'find us' (if we want to connect) when we are truly ourselves (warts & wonder). If we are trying to be something other than 'what we are', we end up attracting like for like and become unhappy and overburdened. You are on the right track my friend. Enjoy your authenticity and the love that she brings x
Aww thank you so much! I totally agree - similar to pretending to be someone you’re not to a love interest of friend, the result is not worth the effort. Much better to be YOU and wait patiently for those who value that.
I've thought about this a lot too! We only have the time we have so why not have fun? Thank you for the video💜😁
Absolutely! I’ve been reminded of my mortality so much this past year and it has really made me think hard about what I’m doing with my time.
Thank you so much for posting this! This is something that I've been struggling with. I've delayed posting a lot my abstract photography and allowing fear to prevent myself from making videos. Hearing this from others makes me feel a lot better about posting what I want and allowing myself more freedom to be who I am and expressing that through my art on social media. Thank you so much Erin!
I’m so glad it reached you when you needed it most! I’m just out here trying to spread these messages to anyone who will listen haha. I say post that stuff, it will find the right people!
cool tkskskskskkssss !!
Thank you I think hahaha I’m not sure what tktktktktktktksssss is!
@@erinisabellabee it’s my way of saying thanks very exuberantly
RUclips just threw this video my way in the home feed, so happy they did :) Great video, subbed and looking forward to more :)
Ahh thank you for the support! Glad it found you 😍
Great point. Subscribed and glad to see where the journey takes you.
Thank you for the support! I’m excited to see where it takes me, too! Haha
I think RUclips as a platform is unique (compared to 'fast-food' social platforms) in that its community wants to get to know the person behind the content. I think it's important not to get caught up with SOCIAL MEDIA TIPS AND TRICKS and stuff, and just create human content for humans! Keep it up Erin :D
I totally agree! Human content is all I want to see and all I want to make!
I’m a behavioral technician, I help a family care for their adult disabled son. I love helping people.
That’s awesome! That sounds very rewarding ❤️
you can uncheck a box when you upload to have your videos not shown to your regular viewers first. "Publish to subscriptions feed and notify subscribers". It can possibly broaden the video's scope if it's not like your regular stuff. It can also make things not get pushed at all. I agree that long-term the trick is to have the audience want to relate to the creator (brand). Weird to think about all the time, makes me feel less authentic ;)
Interesting! I didn’t know that was a thing.
the "proper" name for the thing you hit in badminton is a shuttlecock. i accidentally learned this a few years ago and now all of you are cursed with this knowledge.
Great, now I’ll never un-know this 😂
@@erinisabellabee the haunting is spreading! may you use this thought ghost to mess with people in fun ways
@@GillamtheGreatest hahaha i just might have to do that
It is important to be expansive in your interests as well as brave to share your happiness with the world. 🎉
I totally agree! It does take bravery ❤️
One of your earlier posts on YT about this kinda stuff is why I now follow you on instagram. As an artist who has struggled with”being a niche of 1” since high school it’s really demoralizing to see what becomes popular on social media. I am too neurodivergent to ever hope to achieve mainstream acceptance - which in a way makes it easier, other times it’s demoralizing. We have made this so much worse with the onset of influencer and toxic productivity / side-hustle culture. But I’ve also noticed there’s been an uptick in demand for wholesome, genuine and authentic human - types of content since COVID, and you are part of that movement in a better direction. The online artist “niche” is now so over saturated and overpopulated, it’s almost like the old fashioned way of very slowly building connection 1 person at a time is all that remains, because its actual work with no formulas or viral shortcuts to be had. At the end of the day art is about finding and connecting with your tribe, your “Others from another mother” and some of those tribes are small, but very healthy and rewarding in other ways. 🩶
I think I'm always being my authentic self in my videos. I chose to be an artist as an occupation when I was 7 years old. Now that I know how to edit videos, I'm working on improving the quality of my videos. I think they are getting better as I upgrade my equipment. I like your videos too. I think you produce good quality videos and they are edited well. I don't follow many artists, but there is something very special about you. Keep up the good work! I can't wait to see what you post next. (?) -Atlanta, Georgia USA
Aww thank you so much! You definitely seem like you are being yourself and you seem comfortable in your videos. I like to think all of our hard work will pay off!
I quickly had a look at your channel & yeah, you look comfy on camera :D BUT YOU NEED TO GET A MICROPHONE! Audio is super important! You can get a clip-on microphone, or one that you fix to an arm/stand :) Also make sure to mix so that voice and music are balanced. Keep up the good work random dude on the Internet <333
Most of the problem for artists are yeah exactly what you said, catching up algorithm and stuff, but i cant blame them,,, but at the same time, its important to work on something that is authentic, that represent just you and be yourself. But the down side, is prolly less commission and traction, you know the drill
It’s definitely a give and take, I think people can tell when we are happy with what we are making and what we aren’t - I think it resonates through us. If we create what we love then the right people will find it!
@@erinisabellabee yess 100% agree!
"Building an audience" Is the best way to fail in my opinion... open your own studio in your city and you will see the difference between IRL business and "drop-of-water-in-the-ocean internet superstar" path... With AI, "Content creation" on the internet is probably the last thing I'd work on as an artist (I'm one too) It's the modern scam... "Build your audience! Social media! Spend 90% of your time wasting it on different platforms and only 10% actually painting and you will succeed! And if you don't, it's your fault!" Really, I think people should realize it's not them the problem... but all of these "promises" on platforms... Their goal is to make -you- spend the most time possible on the platforms, pushing the hope to help you grow your business. Their goal isn't to help you grow your business. Pretty sure you can do it better from your skills than trusting the platforms to do it for you!
I agree, but for some people opening a studio is not accessible - I live in LA and it’s quite expensive here. I would love to open my own space some day though! A lot of artists build successful businesses selling their artwork to an audience online, it just takes a lot of time, balance, and effort. It’s just up to the individual if that’s a road they want to go down. I think that in order to be successful you have to be comfortable and happy with what you are doing. I am happy to make content about things that I’m truly passionate about, so that’s my plan along side seeking IRL success at galleries and local shops. Regardless of what the platform’s motives are, they can be an effective vessel if used correctly.
@@erinisabellabee I'd be real curious to know about the real numbers of real people selling to audiences. And here I'm not talking about the 5 social media superstars at the top... That's how you have artists working 9 to 5 in something else and clawing and scratching for an audience on the side to cross fingers and maybe sell for tiny tiny amounts... I still believe that investing in a studio brings much more money much quicker. And I got my own studio in Switzerland, if we want to talk about expensive places XD
Great!
Thank you!

Watching this after my instagram took down a lewd anime drawing I worked on
The most annoying part about that is that it literally says in their policy that nudity is OK in artwork. I’m sorry they took it down!
Interesting! I work in data analytics and very much enjoy my work but I really love to produce music and write. I often feel like I should choose between them but am becoming more comfortable integrating both.
I think so many people feel that way! It’s an idea that gets constantly reinforced by what we see online. I think it’s so natural to do both!
I'd love to hear what you do!
