Why is the Zelda Franchise OBSESSED with Time Travel?
Zelda was meant to be a time travel game. While it didn't work out for the series' first entry, over time, the franchise has dabbled with the time travel concept in many different ways, often contradicting or confusing their own games not to mention the series at large...but perhaps that last bit doesn't matter. Today let's take a look at how the Zelda series has used time travel in its games.

In Defense of the Water Temple

Ocarina of Time's Water Temple may be the Zelda franchise's most notorious dungeon. Often lampooned for its implementation of the Iron Boots and its dizzying layout, the Water Temple has long been a source of frustration. I recently played through Ocarina of Time again and it turns out, the Water Temple is incredible, even given its anachronistic UI, making it the best dungeon in Ocarina of Tim...
What If Tears of the Kingdom Was Just DLC?

Even before its release, Tears of the Kingdom had been lampooned as '$70 DLC' (downloadable content). With large expansions in other franchises, like Elden Ring's Shadow of the Erdtree, I think it would be interesting to expl...

    Nintendo needs to bring back dungeons. I’m not talking about 2.5D Zelda games. Which they brought it back in echoes of wisdom. Thank the Lord God they did cuz my nostalgia for dungeons have peaked. I want complex dungeons far worse than the water temple or any temple that was difficult in 3D Zelda games. Make them huge which was rumored to be in Botw/Totk but never got. P.S. I want the next Zelda game to be Darker than Dark…Darker than Majoras Mask and Twilight Princess. If they have to make the game somewhat a mix of both nonlinear and linear…totally fine with it. I want them to focus on sword skills and upgrades and they still can implement the breaking of weapons. Also bring back underwater swimming and fishing.

    Zelda just sort of uses all different ways you can have time travel at once inconsistently you've got closed time loops, you've got total time resets, you've got split timelines (aonuma no), you've got inconsequential paradoxes, whatever I always had the idea though that since it outright involves the goddess of time, that the Triforce and such kind of higher divine matters can exist sort of Outside of Time and are allowed to be more loose

    there's a funny thing in OoT involvng a time mechanic that does happen but, we don't actually see you know those weird door of time blocks that you make disappear? when you play the song of time to them, you aren't actually making them disappear, you're *sending them through time* the catch is that you only get to see most of them as a child *or* as an adult, and the few you do see with both are bugged out. with one exception! in the lava room in goron city, there's a block that you do get to properly see it move through time, letting you reach the grotto on the other side without the longshot

    • @LittleBeanGreen
      @LittleBeanGreen День назад

      I'm away of this and that's a perfectly reasonable explanation given that you need to use the Ocarina to move them (and probably why playing Zelda's Lullaby is the key song - there's some familial time powers at play here). It's just a shame they couldn't have been better integrated to solve puzzles after time.

    Stop trying to make "The timeline doesn't matter" happen. It's not gonna happen. lol To be honest, the inconsistencies born out of time travel in the Zelda series are pretty minor by time travel inconsistencies standards. Although in this regard the Zelda series has a get out of jail free card in the fact that... Well... It ain't science fiction, but fantasy. Meaning things don't have to align in a scientific sense, and changes can very easily (and believably) be waved as magic and/or divine intervention. Also, the Zelda series up to this point has followed the golden rule of all great time travel stories: don't make the story about time travel. I don't remember where I read or heard this, but whoever said it, they were right: the best time travel stories aren't really about time travel, but rather use time travel as a framing device for other aspects of the story, and don't bring too much attention about how time travel is supposed to work. And the Zelda series, whether consciously or unconsciously, follows that rule to a T, not only in narrative, but also gameplay.

    • @LittleBeanGreen
      @LittleBeanGreen 2 дня назад

      Your last point I like although I do think the franchise needs to take a step back from time travel as a framing device for its stories. They're just too scared to admit it :)

    7:18 Not only are there two of the same secret stone, but during the Molduga attack when Rauru, Sonia, and Zelda are all using their respective secret stones to enhance the power of their light beam, two out of the three secret stones are the same stone (Rauru's and Zelda's, Sonia's stone becomes Ganondorf's stone but never time travels). Throughout the whole Imprisoning War the only reason there were a total 7 sages to oppose Ganondorf is because of the extra stone from the future. While Breath of the Wild didn’t have it in the sense of time-jumping… Why did Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity exist in the first place? While AoC wasn’t canon, Tears of the Kingdom did reveal that all of the events in Breath of the Wild and its own present era are all a part of a time loop… And Age of Calamity did what? Calm, collected, graceful, associated with ice and water, blue hair… She can also freeze her opponents… (and keeps her frozen victims in her “trophy collection”…) Sound familiar? I know you said the Zelda Timeline doesn’t matter. It only matters to me in the context of a single canonicity. *Skyward Sword, Ocarina of Time, Majora’s Mask, Twilight Princess…* To me, these games are canon in that order. The events of The Wind Waker and onward are parallel. But if the word “logic” is taken into consideration, then the Adult Timeline shouldn’t exist because the Hero of Time reversed all of that. Now I’m not saying to dismiss Wind Waker in any capacity, but the logical conclusion is that the events leading to Twilight Princess are the canon outcome. Everything else is just an excuse to introduce a multiverse… That’s what doesn’t matter to me. And about the Hero of Time with the Triforce of Courage from the future and there exists a full Triforce at the same time? Well, my theory is that the Triforce of Courage wielded by the Hero of Time came from the future while the Triforce of Courage pieced together by the Hero of Winds is the one from the past the Hero of Time returned to, but because there’s no hero from the point Zelda sent him to the past, the past Triforce of Courage was fragmented into 8 shards. To put it simply, the Triforce of Courage swapped places from the respective eras. The one from the future went to the past with Young Link and later wielded by the Hero of Twilight; the one from the past went to the future with no hero to seal Ganon, which in turn caused it to shatter into 8 and was to remain hidden within the Great Sea until Toon Link came into the picture. And bear in mind that when Hero of Time was sent to the past to regain his childhood, the Master Sword hasn’t been pulled from its pedestal. It sat there since Demise’s eradication… fast forward to Twilight Princess… that’s more powerful the Master Sword ever has been… “The sword will continue to gain strength if bathed in sacred power. The stronger that power, the more powerful the sword becomes.” Suck it, Light Dragon! So the Master Sword the Hero of Time used to seal Ganon remained in the future, separating itself from its former master to await a new one then meet its own end beneath the waves… That’s just my hypothesis. Your take?

    I like the idea all of the disparate time shenanigans are all possible in the Zelda universe. Interesting to think the entirety of the Zelda timeline is contingent on all these processes going on in the background. Also as you said it doesn't matter. Seeing you list all the time travel mechanics in the series, makes me realize just how underutilized recall is in TotK. Recalling enemy projectiles & gears was only so interesting for so long- I think I mostly used it to correct my own errors (like dropping a device I was building). Dragon Zelda obviously spent those 10K years over that threshold up until the upheaval, so she never interacts with her past self and viceversa. Now, don't get me wrong, the story of TotK was a shit show, but this thing in particular was not one of its failings.

Zelda is no different, and I think the reason why many Zelda stories are so lauded is in no small part due to their implementations of time travel. Ocarina of time and majoras mask make the best use of it narrative-wise imo, and both stories could not be told otherwise. There's a certain emotional element unique to time travel fiction I think, and it has allowed Zelda to craft some of the most genuinely moving and thought-provoking stories ever told.

      Ocarina doesn't work without the young/adult Link dynamic. It was amazing they could do something similar yet ocmpletely unique with the literal next game in the series.

    Regardless of what the fascination with time travel does to their lore, it did give us OoT and MM, arguably the greatest time traveling games outside of Chrono Trigger and the mechanics in the other games are always on point as well. I think TotK is the only real "fumble" time traveling wise because it does feel kinda tacked on compared to some of the other games.

    Hey LBG, are you like me and think that the time mechanics of the Zelda franchise are based off the film Source Code (2011)? In the film, Dr. Rutledge says, “Source Code is not time travel. Rather, Source Code is time re-assignment. It gives us access to a parallel reality.” If you replace Source Code with “The Legend of Zelda franchise” it gives us a clue that what Link is ACTUALLY doing is slipping between parallel realities to accomplish his task/solve puzzles. With that now confirmed, the timeline really doesn’t matter because none of the games are connected except by vague echoes between dimensions. Also did you know that the name of Jake Gyllenhaal’s character in that film is Colter Stevens? Wild

    • @LittleBeanGreen
      @LittleBeanGreen 3 дня назад

      Furthermore, did you know that both 2011's Source Code and 2009's Spirit Tracks take place on trains? Both are the same story taking place across time slippages, per Dr. Rutledge, confirmed. Zelda is the role of Captain Colleen Goodwin (Vera Farmiga). Link triumphs over evil - that's a 'GOOD WIN' against evil. It's the same story...re-assigned.

It would be so nice to have that smooth gameplay in the Oracles as well. I was honestly thinking that they would surely remake them as well, given how much of a non-brainer it is with all the shared assets between LA and the Oracles. But we know how Nintendo is. On another note: I also liked that all the Gameboy Zeldas were set outside of Hyrule. To me there's too much of a reification of the elements that make up Zelda as the series went on. The Hylian shield isn't just a standard issue soldier's shield you can buy for 80 rupees anymore, no, it's THE ultimate shield that (almost) never breaks. There isn't a cool ultimate sword you've never seen before, it's always just the Master-Sword. It's boring when you can already guess what items you're going to get and which locations you're going to visit at the start of the game.

    Games as experiences are rare. Games I describe as greater than the sum of their parts are hard to come by and that's why people don't want to spoil it. I can't beat it it's a very scary game to me since the immersion that I'm exploring space is too great. That alone speaks to it that I'm so immersed that I feel like I'm exploring space and it feels like a danger. It's your first souls game (for me it was 3) and man is that an experience I cherish. The difficulty is the sauce. It's technically do it in any order but most people will do it in an intended order. The game being designed with that in mind allows the feeling of adventure to even exist. Being able to go to death mountain any time you want is a different feeling of it being this dangerous mountain you have to work towards. If there is no sense that any part of the world is equally as valuable or dangerous as every other something is lost. They were even aware of this issue with the color system but it's a poor mans substitute. Zelda has always been a grand adventure at its most basic.

    Link is the only silent protagonist i can think of that is their own character and their thoughts and feelings are easily understood since he is pretty much a surrogate for the average person. OOT is just cowboy bebop for kids thematically and the older you get the more you go "damn, that hits too close to home". The time trilogy OOT, MM, WW as I call it hit the older I get. I was replaying the ending bits of WW and damn the king I relate to and I'm only 30 man. Wind Waker in general is highly underrated especially talking about how depressing it can get.

    I've always had to scratch my head at the complaints about this dungeon. The atmosphere, the storytelling (dark Link esp) and the setting are so compelling. I agree with you that the aesthetics of the original are far and away the best, and have aged spectacularly- I will never tire of the water reflections lighting the dungeon. I have no problem loosely using walkthroughs on harder dungeons in the series, and doing so makes this dungeon very enjoyable if I get really stuck. I have memories of my (much better at gaming) older brother getting stuck for weeks in this dungeon because of that one key, and I can see why that would tarnish the experience for some, but I've experienced that same thing in other dungeons, especially in the older 2D games, so I don't think it's unique to this dungeon.

    As far as the Ocarina of Time temples go, the Water Temple is a definite top 3 pick for me (the others being Forest Temple and Spirit Temple). I don't have a lot I can say about it that wasn't already discussed in the video; I had a "that key" moment in everyone's favorite spot under the platform when I first played through it, sure, but I guess my feelings for the Water Temple are over-all pretty tame, which is pretty good given what it's supposed to be. The Forest Temple I mainly enjoy for the atmosphere and the amazingly ambient song that plays for it; the entire location is just something I'd love to have more of to explore. The Spirit Temple, I suppose my only real grievance with it is that it always feels "too short" for me, but that's partly my fault for getting Silver Gauntlets before starting Shadow Temple and then coming back to do the adult portion after. Again, great song, real enjoy the feel of the place as a whole - especially with how grand and almost "final" it all feels. The Water Temple, now that I know it to a point and have spatial awareness enough that it only mildly annoys me for a moment at the worst of times, is certainly intriguing to me, in a way. It's the closing of the middle-act of the game (at least when playing the dungeons in order) and I really do like how even on a world-building level, it tries to challenge Link in ways he has not been challenged by anywhere else up to that point, and having to fight Dark Link - for Link to have to face his own manifest darkness - before plunging into the Shadow Temple, I think is quite neat.

    • @LittleBeanGreen
      @LittleBeanGreen 6 дней назад

      I hear that forest temple/spirit temple combo a lot. I get their appeal (I also really like the ambience and music of the forest temple). But I think the design of the water temple is second to none, especially in OoT.

    In my latest playthrough I did just a few days ago, I found that back-walking to the other side of the illusion room instead of facing forward doesn't trigger Dark Link to appear - not until you turn towards the path forward and look back again. Also if you have created the Scarecrow's Song when going into the Water Temple, you can create a shortcut back up to the high-water song marker that lets you skip a lot of back-tracking (though you have to pay attention to where Navi flies to to notice it, and you actually have to get up there the normal way at least once to play the song at the location).
