I am curious why you have gone to the hairpin/direct feed as opposed to the capacitance feed beams typically come with ? What’s the upside/advantage ? Thx 73s
I’m having problem with the zoomr8 …I’ve been using it for over 6 months and it was perfect thanks to you … now I have no modulation but the radio still keys down ..I’ve checked everything possible…. Might buy a new cable or zoom….any possible suggestions you have would be appreciated thank for everything
@@gjm8461 my guess would be the cable. Does the bar graph on the zoom still show activity when you talk into the mic. If so, try plugging headphones directly into zoom to check for audio
Yes the bar shows good graphics and I can hear myself talking on with headphones on …. I was plugging the connector in and out from two different radios……I noticed the white wire wasn’t connected to one of the pins on the connector… is that normal
@@gjm8461 usually the white wire is audio. Try touching it to different pins while keyed up and see if you get audio.
Thanks brother….. White wire was the problem….
@@gjm8461 good deal. The zoom is usually bulletproof so when you have an issue, start with the cable. Glad you got it working.
I am lucky enough to live in the same town as Deer Slayer. He is a class act. He has went above and beyond helping us get back into the land of DX. 73s
Hey Deerslayer. I just bought the Zoom R8. Any chance you may have some ideas on settings for a RCI 2995dx HP the newer version. I do have Wideband transmit and recieve done to the radio. I tried using the settings you had in the video but I am trying to figure out how to get that sound you got. I have talked to you a few times when skip is good. Thanks. MR. Watts waving from North Carolina
interesting build. I'm thinking of building a beam antenna but that swr slide adjustment seems to me at least be shorting out the coax incoming signal? If I took an ohm meter wouldn't measure a short circuit? Or am I mistaken?
@@tomcatmeow69 I never checked it with an ohm meter. I just know that mine works well. Next time I build one , I will check and see
Thanks i just bought a r8 with asymod works great 383 tampa bay waving 👍
I record Music at home and have Interface, DAW a lot of different mics with a lot of plugins for vocals. I have yet to incorporate it to my CB radio stuff. One of these days I will have to play with adding my Music stuff to my CB. Great Video
Is that where it tunes at or closer to front of beam ?
@@jeffhicks2070 I run the tuning rods towards the reflector but you can run them towards the front of you want to.
And by the coax being on the bottom,it's protected from the weather.👍🏿
Wished I had the manual for mine. Didn’t come with it. Hopefully cable is correct to connect to computer. Not sure how to do it.
You were a great help in setting up my board. Thank you so much for making this video.
what's the model numbers of the two microphone you show in the video
The condenser mic is a bm800 and the dynamic is a Shure sm58
Thanks
Hey buddy…. I haven’t heard ya out there hope all is well.. I think I’m going to steal your idea for my buddy’s beam I’m building for him how many watts do you think it will hold? Cause he has John DeLuna 955 in TX fixing his bread box as we a speak and it’s a 6 tube 3-500z box .. and where in Home Depot is this star board ? I’ve been using cutting boards from wallmart
It handle any amount of power. The star board is where the pieces of metal and ankle iron and aluminum are. If they have it. Last time I went to buy some, they stopped selling it at my home Depot so I bought a 8' long 1x6 plastic board. It's a little thicker and seems to work well.
I’m going to go to depot and check right now if not I was going to wallmart for a cutting board to use
I see the possibility arcing just at the lead edge of his elements on The hairpin the angle aluminum is way close
It definitely will work as a balun. A balun will help with rf traveling back down the exterior of the coax. Depending on the frequecy, the coax, etc a balun can become more necessary or useful.

All that work to listen to a bunch off LIDDS on CB talk over each other.🤣🤣
talked to you last sunday either on 6 or 11 and you sounded fantastic. amazing audio. 883 up around these great lakes
there's an easier way keep it as a dipole no hairpin. read the capacitance with an analyser use a bit of brain power. L = 1 / (2 × π × f × C then wind an inductor to the required size and place across the dipole centre. if your calculation and inductor are correct you'll have low swr.
That's great. . I'm sure he has all types of scientific reasons on why tand how this could possible happen😂😂😂 triple seven CT got down.
This was a fantastic video! Very informative and right to the point. Thank you for sharing. Very cool!
You are welcome. If you have any questions, just let me know.
@deerslayer816 will do. I have to save my pennies to buy one first. I have always enjoyed your audio when I talk to you. I tried a behringer mixer and didn't get the results I was looking for. This should do the trick.
wow you must really like cb
Love it!
How would a asymond radio sound with that Zoom 8
I'm not sure but with right adjustments I'm sure it would sound great. I know guy's that run processors with them and they sound good. My friend runs a zoom with his d rail radio and it sounds good.
Maybe I will work that with my icom 7300 I know I will have to make the adjustments on the menu setttings on SSB …. Thanks for that great video
Thanks deerslayer , just got a zoom r8 , Wow! Added so much more fun to the radio hobby, thanks for sharing
Your welcome. If you have any questions , I can try to help.
@deerslayer816 your the best thanks 73,s
The reason you want a current balun is that you get a cleaner pattern from your yagi. You also get less noise from common mode currents. The yagi will work quite well without the balun, but there is a measurable difference for sure. muehlhaus.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/pattern_nobalun2.png
What radio is this icom 718?
Good demo, dear slayer. " Skirt chaser"
Hey Deer Slayer how is the Radioddity QT40 working for you?
It's not working out to well in my truck. RF is getting in it and causing a squall. Same thing with my 955. Going back to my cobra 29. No problems with it.
@deerslayer816 do you run only the Zoom R8? If so, with the 4 pin adapter you showed.. I'm assuming your going directly into the radios mic jack. Do you do any mods to the radios? Wide band mods, asymod, mauldulator? Or just through the radios normal audio path? I have some audio gear, 3 pieces of Berighner and a Studio v3 mic preamp. It goes into my Anytone 5555 N2 and and bandpass filter is set to 4khz wide. Just can't get nowhere near your sound. Any advice, should I consider direct injection on a radio? 127 Kaydo in Monticello KY your northern neighbor!
You sure sounded good on my radio. I have to wonder if a Stryker 955 or a cobra 25 will both allow that audio bandwidth.
I have ran this audio Strykers and cobra's and galaxy, connex. It works well on all of them.
Thanks for this video Deerslayer! I'm envious of your setup. Unfortunately I'm 73 years old and my state of health won't allow me to construct/ wrangle with/ otherwise handle something so big. I did make a simple PVC dipole and I use it to regularly talk skip. I've heard you on air many times and I'm located in eastern Nova Scotia (Nova Scotia131). Nice work!
i'm also from eastern Nova Scotia (Glace Bay) CBI767 and my name is Greg too LOL VE1CNC
You have good audio on am with this ts440?

Ah......if we could only see RF ! Then we might witness the need for a Balun ! It's job, as I understand it, keeps the antennas pattern from being skewed, and Common Mode Currents off the Coaxial cable, so that it too, isn't transmitting RF back into the Shack and elsewhere ! And helps with RFI issues ! And I would encourage anyone interested, to searching up the information on Baluns, as there are a couple types ! Not saying your antenna won't play in it's current configuration, but after researching a bit, I think you may see where you can even get more power into the antenna, where it belongs, and likely keep your neighbors happy ! And who doesn't want that ? 👍😉
Maybe. I'm no expert but I've ran it that way for 12 years with no problems. My neighbors house are so close you barely fit a car between them and I don't bother any of them.
So you can, and other have fed balanced antennas with an unbalanced line such as coax, but they actually make Gamma matches for a reason. It would be simpler for a manufacturer to just make a hairpin/beta match for a coax connection, but they recommend that you use a balanced twin lead, or choke, or balun for their hairpin/beta type match.......If you try to decouple the RF energy from an unbalanced coax line directly to a balanced beam such as yours you run a risk of developing unwanted antenna currents on the outer shield of the coax. RF is stupid in that it can't tell the difference between the conductive antenna element or the conductive braid on a piece of coax. If you use a Gamma that always keeps the shield at ground potential it's much much more likely that most all of the energy will be decoupled properly to the elements instead of the coax.
Of course it works without a balun, but a balun is supposed to sharpen the directivity, by isolating the feed line.
This is good content
I'm able to pick up your signal on my handheld CB channel 26 In Ontario, Canada
It's just good condition's.
316 in the keystone. talked to you one Saturday morning this summer. take care out there
I just watched a videogate with you on it sounded great. You were using a kenwood 440 is this the same set up for that radio? I just got a kenwood ts-440s. Was wondering if you had to do any modifications to sound that good or just using the zoom with nothing done to the radio?
The radio is not modified. I run power output at 30% or less and mic gain at 10%> which is the first line on the knob. Around 7 o'clock. The power output depends on how much you need but that's where I run mine.
@@deerslayer816 thanks ill be getting a zoom r8 in the near future. Hopefully it sounds as good with my 440 as it does with yours.
Do you hook it straight to the mic jack on the 440? I know I'll have to make a cord or buy one to run to the mic jack.
I bought a cord from on air designs.com but it is wired for cobra 4 pin so you will have to have adapter from 4 pin to 8 pin Kenwood. Or you can look at how theirs is made and make your own.
@@deerslayer816 I'll check it out. Thanks for the help and information.
You should work with a vertical dipole antenna like the Sirio GainMaster which ia 10 - 11 -12meter antenna without tuning. When you set that antenna up your SWR is 1.0:1 on all frequencies! And the Fiber Optic structure will make you send your signal all over the world!!!
Sirio GP won’t hold the power or talk with that direct fed beam. The So239 connector is the weak spot on any antenna not to mention those Sirio GP’s have a weak matching network to start with. Direct fed with a hairpin match or a vacuum variable feed point is the way to go in my opinion.
1.0:1 on all frequencies, eh? If you just put a 50 ohm resistor on the end of your coax, you'll get that too. Or, if you use a long enough coax, any antenna will be 1.0:1 on all frequencies.
@@stargazer7644 okay thank you for agreeing. Now go get yourself a Sirio Gain Master antenna!
Just a lil ground plane 23 ft up... funny right there!
Lol.. first time I heard ya say bye bye bye. Nice gate!
How long are the elements on each side?
Bring the feed points closer together and you will not need the hairpin match. This is not a hairpin match, it is just a tuning stub
What do you think a hairpin match is?
@@stargazer7644 there is a differance
what a load of nonsense

Evening time Deerslayer. I talked to you a few nights ago out of Mississippi(328). We talked about your Zoom and me being on an EQ plus trying it out. Since then I’ve ordered a new Zoom r8 and that cable. Appreciate the input that night. I believe I will end up with much better and more broad sounding audio once I find that happy spot for my setup. Again, thanks for the chat. Three2Eight in the Magnolia.
You are welcome. If you need any help with the zoom, let me know.
I played with the Zoom and got it set up last night. The cable should arrive tomorrow. Sounds amazing through earphones. Using a Shure SM58, you think I should back off the bass a couple db? I remember you mentioning you found that backing off the bass a little made it sound the best when using a mic similar to my Shure. Again, appreciate all that you’ve shared. Most would not do that.
You probably need less bass with that mic. I now zero out the EQ settings in the pan eq menu, for the tracks. And do all my EQ settings through the main eq in the effects window.
I found out by accident last night that their are different style reverbs that can each be edited. Short hall, big room, ect. After pressing effect, the buttons below the screen say insert, reverb, chorus. When you press reverb, it takes you into the screen just for reverb adjustments. Pretty neat. Think there’s 25 presets or so. Can taylor your reverb if needed. Can edit each one of the presets if needed, or make your own just as we do when setting up “effect”.
I run mine on number 1. Bright room
