I love and greatly admire Ashkenazy’s playing, he’s one of the great pianists for sure. Yet, after hearing some of the daring and virtuosic versions of this ferociously difficult concerto and cadenza (Yuja Wang, Marta Argerich, and of course Horowitz) in this piece Ashkenazy seems careful and reserved by comparison.

Horowitz at his best. Starting 0:46s it is surrealist. Horowitz has met God. Sincere playing and super passionate. His early tempo is (on purpose) slow to increase the effect later on. Rachmaninoff has complaint about Horowitz slow tempo but understood the purpose later on... Earl Wild for ex, seems more in control and speed aligned with Rach conception but the effect is not there...

It makes me sad that only 146,300 people searched "Chopin Piano Concerto, op. 11, no. 1, mov. 1" But it makes me happy to see this piece, as it got me infatuated with the piano when I heard it on the radio. I always had a knack for music, but this just absolutely enveloped me in it. It's what makes me a Pianist, today, 7 years after I heard this piece in my moms car, after a boring day in the 1st grade. I strive to play this in a concert hall, with a well known conductor/maestro, and orchestra, as Chopin, in my opinion, the greatest composer of all time, will be one of the only composer for me, as the majority of my current repertoire is made up of Chopin's easier Nocturnes and Waltzes. Thank you for uploading this 12 years ago, almost a year before I was born.

The piano parts at 3:06 and 7:50 are as expressive as the best of Chopin. I take Rubinstein's version as the template by which to judge all others, but I also recommend Zimmerman's version.

Can u see guys why i love Argerich with all my heart? Why she is by far the best? She is the perfect balance between virtuosity and musical expression. I have to admitt this cadenza is faster than Marthas, but is not even close ‘musically’. I mean, than one who is more virtuoso than Martha, is not as expressive as she is. And that one more expressive is not nearly as virtuoso as she.

No era de este planeta. Los Rubatos, la dinámica y la expresividad de este señor no se... vino de otro planeta. Me hace llorar... Es como que puedo escuchar y darme cuenta de lo que le pasaba a Chopin en su cabeza mientras escribia esto... A alguien mas le pasa?

When Rachmaninoff first met Horowitz on January 8, 1928, they went over the 3rd Concerto in the Steinway basement on 57th street in New York. Afterward, Rachmaninoff made a few suggestions about dynamics, phrasing, and mentioned that he liked this shorter cadenza more than the longer one."the alternate cadenza is like an ending in itself. It's not good to end the Concerto before its over" (page 430 Horowitz biography by Glenn Plaskin)
