Gavin, how would you convert full size measurements to 3 1/2” ?
@ConnorsWorkshop17 Ok, as we have discussed this in messages, I thought I should share it on here for other followers, 12 inches to the foot you multiply that by .062 that will give you .744 which is essentially 3/4" to the foot, if that makes sense.

@andymottram8546 Hi Andy, yes I'll do a sign writing video eventually when I'm sorted with the wagon I'm finishing, I'll only be doing the odd "making something" video on small easy jobs, otherwise video clips will be very long and hard to upload.

Hi, I have only just found your channel and I hope to see you in the new year. As for building locos, I don't have the confidence to make the boiler lol. I live in Thailand now and I hope to build a small workshop soon but I bet it will cost me a fortune to have someone make the boiler for me plus I will have to pay for the packaging and posting as well. I was thinking of making the boiler just for looks so it will be just a showpiece loco but I may end up regretting it. I hope to see more of you in the new year. Happy Christmas

What black paint are you using Gavin? I’ve sprayed some of the Std 7 tender bits in grey primer to protect them, but maybe I should give them a coat of black.
@robw53 I'm using Upol satin black paint, I order it through Ebay, the coverage is great best paint I've used in ages
Great work and detail. Unfortunately family events are keeping me away from tender wheels and a side project to get my new tool post on my lathe. Great story and not boring at all.

I think Peter has TIG tagged parts for his Flying Scotsman build, and then Silver Soldered them. I did build a G1 frame a few weeks ago and just tagged the buffer beam and then silver soldered it. You could create some flow channels in the joints with a few strokes of a file on the edge of the butting plate, but I really don't think you need to worry. I do mix my flux really quite thin when I'm doing things like that, really get it to slop in everywhere
@ejparrott thanks mate, I was thinking really washed out flux should do it, I'll try and find a local welder to do the tig bit.
Such a simple but great way to make the steps look really detailed. Will be noting this and making my own jig when the time comes. Great video keep them coming

Nothing wrong with doing it per full size. We now have access to original drawings, modern techniques and a desire to take model engineering to the next level. Keep up the good work!

A trick when calculating the the conversion from full size to 7 1/4. After doing the calculation on your calculator, highlight the answer and hold ctrl and c to copy the answer, then move to solid edge and when you click to add the dimension, hold ctrl and p to paste your answer into the the dimension field. Save you having to type it out each time and prevents errors. Keep up the great content..been thoroughly enjoying it.

Great work Gavin. I admire your attention to detail and I agree that if you are going to the effort of making a loco you may as well make it as close to the real thing. It’s nice to see people like yourself with such passion to keep our hobby alive. Please keep up the good work.
I'm sure there is something I'm missing, but why use this gauge for the model? Based on the standard UK track gauge it looks like it's going to end up being close to - but not exactly 1/8 scale. Is there some reason that it's not exactly 1/8 scale?
It essentially is 1/8 scale, as I've explained in the video I'm going off 1.54" to the foot, using the published drawings from Dick Stockings and works drawing to add the detail, hope that makes sense.
However instead of 1/8 to every foot it's 1/8 to every inch.

@connorsworkshop16 divide by 11.25 will give you the five inch measurements, hope that helps.

I wished my dad started a video diary 20 years ago when he decided to start a build of 78022 in 7 .25” gauge, he’s not building it as detailed as you are, he wants it to be suitable as a passenger pulling loco, easy to run, I’ve got loads of images of 78022 if you need them.
This design won't be any less of a passenger hauler having the changes it will just look like its big brother, have plenty of photos from all the surviving class 2s, what I'm making sure I don't add modern details that has been added in during preservation, and there's been a few.

Scale width of a wheel on the tread should be 16.54mm.

Silly question time. What's BA? I know its a unit of measurement but I keep coming across it regularly with miniature railways now.
BA is for British Association thread size, very common in model engineering because its closer to scale size

For gauge would the shaft not be best turned with shoulders so when you slide on wheels they can't go on any further and they have to be 173mm? Fixing can be a cotter pin through axle sounds simple to me but maybe I am looking at it wrong
